I agree but the article as a whole makes some good points.

I agree too, more money needs pumping into other areas/avenues such as mental health and education but not at the expense of policing.

Defunding is an interesting view point, on one hand it could be extreme, which some people might think is stark raving bonkers, but on the other hand, depending how it applied, I think there is something within it, that needs looking at.

One of my arguments often with criminality, say where mental health is concerned as just one example, all the resource is chucked at it after an event, rather than before it, and by that time it can suck up all the financial resources, virtually for the whole of a county line in one incident.

    Hospital treatment for the victims
    Sectioning of the individual
    The potential loss of life
Criminal investigations and trial that will run into millions
The assistance required to rebuild the lives affected

The list is endless. Events occur due to a lack of social support, or the lack of knowledge in how to obtain that assistance.

I sat on a trial of one such incidence, and when the defence asked, why didn't you do this, that and the other in the investigation, it was openly retorted, have you any idea how much time, resource and finances, one such incident takes to investigate. Basically the long and short of it was even if you had the money, the man hours involved were impossible to achieve the perfect evidence.

That's the cost of not dealing with problems within the community. Much like the lock-down, it's very easy to go into it, it's a damn sight harder coming back out of it, especially for the people it left behind.

You only need to look at the case of George Floyd, one dodgy $20 dollar bill, will now become millions. One life and millions of dollars could have been saved, if the cops hadn't bothered turning up.

Does defunding actually mean no police? Thought I read somewhere that it doesn't. Not pretending to be any sort of expert though.

No, the idea is to divert money spent on policing into other areas that could help stop crime happening.
The answer should be to fund both.

Is right. I’ve had first hand experience of just how far the cuts to police numbers and the justice system as a whole btw (which often seems to be overlooked) has affected the level of service the coppers who are left can realistically deliver.

We need that money put back in, together with all of the largely local social initiatives that were the first to hit the bin during austerity.

Calls to defund the police are completely misguided.

So who would fund them instead? Private industry? All sounds a bit Robocop to me... but without Robocop.

tbh it's a no brainer, you decriminalize about a third of the population, rake in tax and cut off the main finance streams of the most violent gangs, whilst freeing up the police to do something useful.
You could also give smack heads free smack and the insurance companies would gladly pay for it, it would save them a fortune.

The USA, and the rest of the developed world, should have learned from it’s experience with prohibition. In fact it finally has, but it’s taken nearly 100 years.

Banning alcohol allowed crime bosses like Al Capone and the mob to build their power bases. When booze was legalised, crime bosses turned their businesses to illegal drugs (and gambling, which is still illegal in many States). Meanwhile the taxes on booze have provided a revenue stream to which all governments have become addicted. Wait and see how quickly the States that have legalised Marijuana, become dependent on that tax revenue.

Prohibition doesn’t work. People are going to get off their heads, legally or illegally. They are also going to gamble, and visit prostitutes, but that’s another story.

Criminalising an activity millions are indulging in regularly, is retarded. The market for drugs isn’t going away; far better to regulate it, and use some of the tax revenue gathered from it, to mitigate the damage it can cause.
