Shocked to see two Royal runners in today's Derby trial. I was counting on Formality winning a small maiden at a helpful price and Punctuation going to Royal Ascot for the Queens Vase. I think they are both talented horses but appear to be thrown in at the deep-end against Waldkonig. My problem with this colt is will he properly get 10f being by Kingman and will he handle the fast going. But at the same time I'm not sure Puntuation will handle the firm as though a lovely looking horse (in terms of looking like a rocking horse) his front legs seem to swing a bit. These horse are either being 'forced' or someone really believes they can be Group standard. We'll see.

As I feared these horses got sent above their station. A poor couple of days for The Queen as Calculation and Vindicate also looked ordinary.

However I am very hopeful of the well-bred Award Scheme brightening things up today at Chelmsford. Later in the day Desert Caravan may also prove worth an investment but is favourite.
A more questionable runner is Dusty Dream who when fancied FTO last year ran a stinker. She did do better second time out and I'm sure she'll win a race before going to the paddocks. It just may not be today.

Things didn't get better yesterday as the lift from 8 to 12f appeared too mich for Desert Caravan and Award Scheme ran quite green.

Today is a new day and there are two Royal runners today. In 1245 Bell introduces a 2yo called Realist (by Camelot)/ In the 2nd week of the turf flat season it seems strange to see 2yos running over 7f . Seems strange to an old git like me anyway as even in a full season 7f races didn't used to start until Eclipse day (early July). Will be surprised if he wins but disappointed if he doesn;t show some promise.
Later in the day Sovereign Grant reappears after 2 years off the course. Now gelded he looks as if he'll start favourite

Very prescient for me, makes a change. Hopefully they'll start sending Make Fast to some reasonable sires now.

A couple of Royal winners this week and sadly the possible demise of Sovereign Grant ( haven't heard yet).. Youthful won well as a 2yo but on his only start as a 3yo he was pulled up. Following an early June run he reappeared yesterday at Leicester and won fairly comfortably. He has ability and may have ironed out some of his kinks. He can win another handicap at the very least.
Today the promising Eastern Sun won fairly comfortably on his seasonal debut at Newmarket. His 2yo form was sound with a 4th on his debut in a fairly hot Newbury maiden (Hukum was 3rd) and then a 2nd to King Leonidas at Newmarket. Unlikely to be fully wound up today he can do a lot better than this. By Muharrar out of a Galileo mare (from the family of El Gran Senor) this colt should get 8f.

Tomorrow The Queen has 2 runners at Newmarket and both should go close. They are the gelding Fruition and the likeable maiden filly Award Scheme.

On Monday we'll find out if Stoute's First Receiver is entered for the Derby. Won't go anywhere winning it but may be the first Royal bred colt to tackle the race in nearly 40 years.

A lot of her string may be donkeys but Tactical is probably her best 2yo since Height of Fashion. Nice win at Newmarket today. Strange that he;s had 3 races and 3 jockeys.

The Queen is having a tough year (Andy and Harry) and a few exciting winners must raise the spirits. Award Scheme added to her tally yesterday and at last looked as if she was getting the idea of what she should do. This comes after the victory of Tactical but I then have to ask some questions.

Getting rid of Tactical's granddam last year was the right thing to do, but her 2019 2yo Cranberry had won her maiden and finished 2nd and 4th in her short Royal career. Early this year she was sold to Italy. Being by Tactical's sire Toronado her new owner must be very happy with how his purchase will look on a Sales Page now.

In the last few years The Royal Stud have been sending mares to Recorder (owned by her as a racecourse who did not run after his 2yo campaign). Many of these mares then found themselves at the Sales. So when you look at Tactical's dam you notice her first covering was Toronado, followed by Iffraaj (a colt) followed by Recorder (a filly produced). Was Make Fast heading for the Sales? Was Tactical's success a total surprise? as I said earlier in this thread I hope Make Fast gets sent to better sires and is definitely not sold.

After his Ascot win I remarked that he had a wonderful low-swinging action which looks very economical. I was delighted to hear the Racing UK paddock expert saying how he stood out in the paddock on Thursday and how much he has improved. The Prix Morny is apparently next.

You're right, although I was thinking more of Nijinsky's action. I don't know if my description of low-slung is correct. Ron would probably have a better view on it.

Problem is, in the end he's just a Toronado colt out of a Makfi mare.

Five runners yesterday and that's a big number for the Queen. Two 2yos made their debut and had perfectly satisfactory runs. I'd expect a lot more from both of them in the future, especially Light Refrain. The big disappointment was Eastern Sun who never got into his race behind Tsar. There was a much improved performance from Kings Lynn's brother Collinsbay. If he'd have stayed straight he probably would have won. He should pick up a maiden or nursery.

The performance of the day was from Award Scheme who, as I had hoped, showed the penny had dropped. Always in control, when the the field came for her she just strode away from them. She looks very capable of taking the next step up to listed class: 10-11f looks ideal. Her next race is awaited

A 2yo to look out for soon is Closeness. An inmate at Michael Bell's, she is a daughter id Iffraaj and should have some pace.

A 2yo winner at Newmarket on Saturday went almost unnoticed but Gosden's charge and the 2nd finished well clear of the 3rd and both could be useful. Where she, Wakening, runs next will tell us what the stable think of this filly. A Darley filly by the way.

Today Award Scheme takes the anticipated shot at Listed company. For a race at Salisbury it looks pretty tough.

This week is about 2yos and some interested ones are entered namel Just Fine (anothe Darley filly but by Sea the Stars) goes tomorrow, while newcomers Encourage (Charlton) and Wink of the Eye ( Haggas) look as if they'll go Saturday. Another possibility is Light Refrain who looked very green on her debut but at the same time a cracking looking filly. One or two winners would be nice.

I notice Estimate was covered by Dubawi for a third time. I remember the first one, Calculation, running behind Too Darn Hot on debut. He was gelded and only moderately useful at about 14F. The filly Approximate was modest on two starts thus far and then the most recent Evaluation made a reasonable start but not as exciting as some of the pundits implied it might be.

Going into Evaluation's debut much of the talk focused on the "Dream breeding" but considering the full brother and full sister's efforts you could hardly have been picking Evaluation out as one who could score on debut

Isn't there another stallion they could try with Estimate? It just seems to be a bit odd to be trying to pair the same two parents year after year. You could see the point if one of the first two attempts had come up trumps but you could wait a long time for one match up to hit pay dirt.

Any ideas for a change of partner?

She has a Frankel yearling and possibly a Siyouni foal. As I said in my earlier piece she needs to be sent to 7f sires.

A ropey few days for the Royal team. Sadly they lost Space Walk on Sunday: her second loss amongst amongst her 4yos. Kings Lynn returned and seemed either rusty or not the horse he was last year. Award Scheme got her black type but was clearly outpointed by a Kirsten Rausing/Mark Prescott filly.
Then there were a set of 2yos. Of all of them the most promising was Encourage. Next, Light Refrain ran better but looks very unfurnished and green. Just Fine and Evaluation made typical Stoute debuts and we'll have to hope they show a lot of improvement. Inveigle should have done better today. Wink of an Eye was woeful. Humming Bee, you will not be surprised (as he's going to the sales next week), ran abysmally.
Tactically and Wakening stand out so far.

An amazing training feat by Balding to get Natural History to win after two years off the track. Injured at the end of 2018, he spent 2019 on the easy list but was surprisingly kept in training. Only a Class 3 handicap but with luck he should add to that.

This victory ended a particularly poor period. A lot of 2yos haven't showed the necessary improvement, though it surely is a matter of time before Light Refrain wins. Collinsbay also looks to have ability and was unlucky in yesterday's Sales Race.

This week the Deep Impact filly Diploma is entered for the first time. We must await Tactical's next race but he's entered in the Middle Park and Dewhurst. Wakening is entered in the Prix Marcel Boussac.

With nearly 30 2yos one would hope The Queen would have a reasonable amount of runners and a fair few 2yo winners. Today she had only her 3rd winner of the season from the13 who have run. This should be a concern as a lot of her maiden and unraced 2yos of last year have achieved little this year.

As it was the Sea the Stars colt Just Fine won his maiden well at Sandown. Despite Moore being one of the first to get down to work on his mount he hit the front under the 2f pole and came away from his field. Moore did little more than hard hands and heels and this colt looks to have a future over a bit further. He looked as if he needed the 8f today and he may be the type to aim at the 10f Zetland Stakes. He is well bred as his dam is a Kingmambo sister to Master of the Seas.

Diploma's first foal Portfolio (by Deep Impact) made her debut at Kempton on Tuesday. Dobbs had her near the front the whole race and at the furlong pole it looked as if the favourite would pull away from her. Portfolio showed a good attitude coming back to within a neck of the winner. Dobbs hardly threw the kitchen sink at her and if she appreciates that handling and learns something she'll be worth following next time out..

Tomorrow Haggas runs a likely type in Chalk Stream. Again by Sea the Stars this colt is out of a good Sadler's Wells filly called Golden Stream. She won as a 2yo and was listed/Group 3 class as a 3yo.

It will be disappointing for the connections if Portfolio doesn't go one better today.

A winner today. I was beginning to think only Natura;l History could win (he goes for the St Simomon Stakes on Saturday). Pied Piper slogged out a win at Newmarket over 10f. Perhaps a bit unfair as Havlin rode him hard but it was mostly hands and heels. Look a horse who will need 12f+ next year.
However its tonights run by Portfolio that is more important.
