I’ve just reported you mate. Don’t answer the door if it knocks unexpectedly, is my advice

Sure, you decide not to pay it.

And they’ll decide to prosecute you.

    Simply really.

We'll see how they get on.

I'm absolutely fine with it because I'm sure they won't.

If you’d have bothered to acquaint yourself with how the law with regards to TV licensing actually works and how to try and legally deny liability for its payment.........here’s a clue, just cancelling the DD isn’t it. You can have that one for nowt. <ok>

You’ve moved around in rented property though mate, and have obvs escaped it.

The minute you buy a new TV the vendor has to notify the TV licensing authorities, and once having paid it, there’s a legally defined process for then trying to deny you no longer legally need one. Just choosing not to pay it isn’t a legal right. That’s literally it.

Who said a legal right? I'm just saying you clearly have a choice whether to pay or not as in reality it's not all that enforceable.

Take your point about renting but I know people who've lived in the same (bought) house for 20 years and never purchased one.

As long as you're not a complete ****ing idiot then there really is very little chance of you every being prosecuted for not having a TV license.

It's an incredibly outdated concept in my view anyway tbh, about time the whole thing was revamped so you purchase for what you watch.

The only choice you have (assuming you watch TV) is to choose to break the law or not. Same as you have the choice to drink drive or not, or to purchase beak. It’s still a criminal offence and not merely a non payment issue and thus a civil matter.

My point was simple, Chief thinking he had a choice to pay it or not, like you would a subscription service for example, is legally incorrect. That’s literally it for actual ****s sake <laugh>

Yeah that's what I meant in choosing not to pay it, I'm not talking about a legal argument as I'm sure Chief wasn't. Don't think he actually believes that it's optional in those terms.

All I'm saying is there's an easy choice not to do so as your chances of being prosecuted for it are extremely small. Everyone can make that choice if they wish.

No he clearly was, hence my reply to him.

You’re also wrong on prosecutions as well, over 10% of ALL criminal prosecutions in this country are for TV licence evasion, and that doesn’t include all of those who just paid up after having their collar felt. 94% of all households pay, the belief that evasion is both extremely common and easy to get away with, is a complete misnomer.

I sent them a letter a few years back saying I was cancelling my licence, they sent me back a letter saying no problem we’ll check with you again in a couple years, which they did. I just sent them a reply saying my circumstances hadn’t changed and I received another letter saying we’ll check in two year. That’s it.

What year is that 1/10 stat from, and how many resulted in convictions? Seem to remember there being a big thing about a fair percentage not getting anywhere in recent years though I can't remember the details.

I'll stand by my theory that you're very unlikely to be caught unless you're a moron if that's all the same with you. I've never known anyone personally prosecuted for it, and probably know about 5-10 people who actually pay it.
