It's exactly the time for that, and a complete review of how society functions too. Regardless of covid we had the issue of increased robotics/AI etc looming which would reduce the workforce too. If that meant that wealth was shared and people worked less to maintain a decent standard of living that would be fine, if it simply means some people employ less and get richer its not fine for society. Hull City Council were trying to get Govt approval to trial UBI, but I'm not sure what happened to that
I like debating stuff like this. Posted a link this morning about big companies not making a profit ( already forgot where and why ) How come Tesla which has never made a profit is largely owned by Elon Musk one of the worlds richest men, there's other too, Amazon went for years without profit. Uber is another. Look at their owners ( I know shareholders ) In defence some will claim they are new tech, hip 21st century industrial revolution. But by and large they are creating low paid non contract jobs which have to be topped up with state funds, and at the same time killing of the traditional high street.
It got knocked back. It would have to be done by some kind of voucher scheme to benefit the local economy
I'm no expert economist, but something must give at some point. If we carry on as we are then all technological advancements either mean cheaper stuff, due to less people in work, or similar stuff with a bigger profit margin for a very few. Either way there is an issue
Tesla had enormous start-up costs, hence the time it's taken to start generating profits, but it has actually made a profit in each of the last four quarters.Tesla Motors pays its employees an average of $94,324 a year, which doesn't sound all that low paid to me.
You're probably right that Tesla's salaries are good, although average salaries aren't a great way of figuring out how many low paid jobs a company has. (and I assumed he was talking about Amazon and Uber in relation to low pay anyway)
I just copied the headline figure, the article did go on to say 'Tesla Motors employees with the job title Staff Engineer make the most with an average annual salary of $135,300, while employees with the title Automotive Service Technician / Mechanic make the least with an average annual salary of $47,884'. Amazon and Uber are indeed far worse.
Oddly enough I did go to google for a mooch around to get some info on Tesla and my laptop threw a right wobbler, lost internet connection even though it was showing connected, froze the screen. Had to resort to turning it off then back on again.
Early retirement and shorter hours are both solutions. The question is what has happened to the efficiency improvements through technology. Either they haven't kept up with population growth, in which case there should be loads of jobs needing filling, or they have kept up and the efficiencies are helping some megawealthy people get even wealthier. Worth considering I think Weirdly (really weirdly in this case as his job title is 'global futurist'!) I did a bit of work with the author of this article a few years ago. Rohit Talwar. Fascinating perspective on stuff like this and worth checking out his stuff https://trainingmag.com/big-reboot-part-2-economic-impacts-societal-transitions
See You being able to mend it by turning it off and on again is just another example of improved tech removing jobs in the ICT sector...
And when it breaks big style it will be binned and replaced with another one made in China by a 5 year old thereby putting a few more notes into the already overflowing bank account (offshore) of someone who has too much money.
If you were mega rich how would you give it away? As I’ve gotten older I really don’t Really want or need much tbh apart from holidays and trips etc Things are all paid off. Im not really materialistic And if I won a few million now I don’t think I’d change my house or out substantial tbh. Just go on more holidays is all. I went in a posh shop in Leeds before lockdown and there was a nice polo shirt and it was 400 quid and I thought then **** that even if I was a millionaire I wouldn’t pay that for a shirt.
I see your point, but then you will have less working people paying taxes which fund the benefits of more retired people. I'm not sure it would really have the benefit overall that you think. Unless you go full Logan's Run and get rid of old people altogether.
