Come on guys - let's get back to some decent music. This track is when it all came together for the little guys. Apart from Marriott, they were a pretty quiet bunch and vastly underated at the time due to the hype around the Stones and the Who.
Fire yes, caravan. Unlikely. He died in 1991 in a fire at his 16th century home in Essex. Don't think they had caravans in the 1500's.
No, he was found on the floor of his bedroom. He'd tried to escape but died of smoke inhilation after it's believed he'd fallen asleep whilst smoking. Troubled man at the time. Frampton tried to help him resurrect his career in the same way that Bowie had helped Frampton to get back on the rails in the 80's after his monster success in the 70's. Frampton accepted the offer of help and joined Bowie on tour, but Marriott couldn't seem to handle it when offered.
Yes you are correct, not sure where that came from, I have a recollection of somebody dying that way, deemed strange because the fire started elsewhere and not obstructing a safe exit.
Haven't got the depth of knowledge generally about music that Angelic and others display, but I do know about the Marriott/Frampton music careers. Both were pivotal in my musical appreciation firstly as a sprog in the late 60's and then in my "serious" period through to the late 90's. As an aside, does anyone remember "the Cars" in the late 70's? They became one of my obsessive bands after Ocasek released their debut album just titled The Cars. I think both him and Orr have died since but they were terrific band.
The Cars - Who's gonna drive you home? The most emotive part of Live Aid. Watched that on a black and white TV in a hotel reception in Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia. It was the German version so the interludes included "German comedians". Two words not normally heard in the same sentence.
remember going to see steve marriot at the cartoon in croydon in the mid eighties, playing with a band called packet of three, he was pissed and the sound was dire, but even then there were flashes of genius when he played some of the blusier stuff,
I’ve got 4 Cars albums and love them all. Heartbeat City was the album with ‘Drive’ on it. Great album.
IMO, the first was still the best. It sold me on them and that took some doing for a Yank band back then......... I think this was probably their frst hit off that album.....................
I can play that track at parties. Ric Ocasek didn’t have the best of voices so I can actually pull it off! The guitar chords aren’t that difficult. edit - I didn’t reallse Orr sung that track - ok but I can still sing it!!
What about drummer singer/songwriters? Don Henley comes to mind (The Eagles) but there are others: Myron Grombacher wrote most of Pat Benatars songs - and Lita Fords too - here’s a cheesy 90s John Mutt Lange produced rock track:
