Sandown 1.25 Union Rose Won this race last year of 3lb higher. Stable amongst the winners recently and had a winner at this track on last meeting. Union Rose's 3rd at Bath 2 runs ago was a step back in the right direction and she is entered in a class 4 at Bath on monday.

The 3.05 Sandown is pretty open but recent winning form is very thin on the ground. Magical Wish comes here with two seconds and a win in his last three starts and he looks as if he will run his race and be thereabouts at least. His head second last time came on soft ground and Cardsharp was third that day and is 5 lbs better off for a length and a half, so has a clear chance of reversing form on the revised marks but he's not been the most consistent horse and I find the trainer Mark Johnston to be inconsistent as well. On good ground today I will go with Magical Wish to confirm form on the better going this time. His last three RPRs of 101, 102 and 104 are of admirable consistency and in the context of today's race he looks likely to run to something similar and be involved. 3.05 Sandown Magical Wish 4/1 The Flying Childers sees Sacred all the rage. Plenty have tipped her up and she is the highest rated in the race, so hardly a Sherlock Holmes job to have made that deduction and not really necessary to delve into the sectional timings for evidence. 11/8 is pretty skinny and after having opposed her last time over 6F and felt she was a bad favourite for the 1000 Guineas coming into that race, even my post race observation that she needed to be dropped back to 5F cannot allow me to back her despite that change of trip having been made. I was on Steel Bull last time and he disappointed in 7th place but he banged his head in the stalls that day breaking two teeth and bursting his lip, so that won't have been ideal. Looking back at his Molecomb win doesn't read that great though and runner up Ben Macdui was quite disappointing next time out. I fancied Mohawk King for the Sirenia but they pulled him out of that one late on and the observation was that the horse went off too fast in the Gimcrack and didn't last home, so they felt 5F might suit better. Mohawk King had beaten Minzaal on debut and he surely has scope for more yet and at a price I felt it worth chancing the Hannon colt, with the trainer having a few nice sorts this season already. 10/1 for Hannon/Dettori looked too big to me. 2.40 Doncaster Mohawk King 10/1 Two singles and an each-way double.
Mohawk King looked like a 3F horse today. Good enough early dash but burned out badly quickly. In contrast Sacred took time to get rolling but was coming there and looked like she would earn a hard fought win but she was nosed out of it by a 40/1 shot for the upset. The ITV team made it sound like it was how far? for Sacred but Racing kicks you in the teeth from time to time. To add insult to injury I was on Ubettabelieveit in the Gimcrack and he was tailed off last, beaten 30 lengths on the soft ground that day. What a turnaround of form. Matt Chapman's assumption that Sacred would come there "Absolutely on the snaff" didn't quite come to pass.
Magical Wish travelled in OK but was a bit short of room. He seemed very slightly hemmed in but I think there was enough room if he had been good enough and he just couldn't pick up. The handicapper may have got him for now and he may get some relief after that effort but no more than a lb in all likelihood. In the 3.45 race at Donny One Ruler is all the rage. Hugh Taylor and Simon Rowlands from ATR have both put him up today and I am a bit surprised because I thought these guys took the long term strategy and normally steered away from short priced runners. Of course their tips will generate support for horses but at 6/4 or so I was surprised to see Hugh Taylor putting up One Ruler and even more surprised to see that his three picks today were recommended as a doubles and treble bet. I though the pros hated betting outside of singles. Anyway, One Ruler is officially rated 96 and has to catch up with the maiden Spycatcher and some others rated slightly higher. Hard to say if Spycatcher's mark of 105 for being second in the Acomb was warranted for finishing 3 lengths in front of an 86 OR rated runner. I am dubious myself. I thought Royal Scimitar did it nicely on debut and although he needs to reverse form with Spycatcher it is early to write off an impressive win prior to that, so I had a poke at 11/1 in the hope that he bounces back today at Doncaster. 3.45 Doncaster Royal Scimitar 11/1
