Yep, my understanding as well. I would add; Gross obviously tried to chop him down outside but failed & continued. Don’t we as footie fans want the “professional” foul penalised & upgraded to in this case a pen.? I think it’s totally right. Need to get the consistency right tho.

Tbf i think this rule actually makes sense - the reason a foul may continue into the box is because the fouled player is still able to continue with the ball - it is essentially an addition to the advantage rule.

Both pens were bizarre. I think he was trying - helpfully :emoticon-0131-angel - to alert the ref and claim there had been a handball by Welbeck. In doing so he, himself handled the ball and gave away a penalty. <doh> <doh><doh> :emoticon-0136-giggl

Good performance last night in the sense we obviously struggled but still stuck at it and then went and won it. I have seen us lose that sort of match a million times in the past

He was clearly in the box when he was taken out , what's hard to understand about that?

Considering the VAR had to watch about 20 replays from 4 different angles over 2 minutes, and no one on the pitch had a clue, I'd say it can't have been clear cut.

With a number of supposed experts and pundits also disagreeing with one another - it goes to show that it was obviously a very tight call - and therefore VAR should not get involved in the decision.

I think that the most accurate angle was the one from above and it looked like the initial challenge was around about the line of the penalty area, the lower angle behind the goal made it look like it was outside because you couldn't project the lines but it was not "clear and obvious" from any of the angles so it probably should've been a free kick.

That's what video assisted refereeing is there for.

SS, never mind discussion on the validity or otherwise of the VAR-induced penalty award, what about the Saints v Sheff Utd match thread? Obviously, it will be difficult to reach the stellar levels of insight and background information that oozed out of every pore of your match thread start for Brighton v Saints, but with only five days to go we're all hanging on your every word (and TIOON7's spoon clearance skills). COYS!!!!

No it isn't - the complete opposite it in fact!

We need VAR ONLY for huge mistakes and obvious errors - VAR was never about dissecting really tight decisions to make sure 100% of decisions are correct, because that is impossible and takes the fun out of the sport.

I wouldn't say that we did enough to win the game. But Brighton certainly did enough to lose it. They were decent for the first 35 minutes, and then proceeded to play the rest of the match (until going behind) as if they were Burnley or Palace, and trying to see out a 1-0 win. A rather odd choice given that they were at home and, for the most part, not actually 1-0 up. They deserved nothing for that.
