Totilas, one of the great dressage horses of all time, has died aged 20 from colic complications. A really beautiful-looking horse:

    Totilas
(23 May 2000 – 14 December 2020), also known from 2006 to 2011 as Moorlands Totilas, and nicknamed "Toto", was a Dutch Warmblood stallion standing 17.1 hands (69 inches, 175 cm) high who was considered to be one of the most outstanding competitive dressage horses in the world, the first horse to score above 90 in dressage competition and the former holder of the world record for the highest dressage score in Grand Prix Freestyle Dressage. Going into the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), Moorlands Totilas and his rider, Edward Gal, had amassed multiple world-record scores in international competition, leading one American journalist to call them "rock stars in the horse world". Totilas was retired from competition in August 2015 and died on 14 December 2020 due to complications from colic.

But the subject of a heap of controversy about what's known as Rollkur. It sounds pretty cruel.

True, Cyc, but it is illegal now. Not only dressage, but show jumping has had its bad moments too. One of Germany's top equestrian trainer/riders, Paul Schockemöhle, was discovered banging a show jumper's legs with a stick to get him to do things right over the obstacles. Was a few years ago but caused quite an uproar at the time. Will see if I can find something on it, and tag it on here. Meanwhile, here's something on Rollkur from Wikipedia:

Rollkur or hyperflexion of the horse's neck is an illegal practice in equestrianism defined as "flexion of the horse's neck achieved through aggressive force" and is banned by the world governing body, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). ... Rollkur has been used by dressage and show jumping riders.

....and here's the thing on 'poling', as it's known as:

    From Wikipedia:
Paul Schockemöhle (born 22 March 1945, in Mühlen, Oldenburg) is a former German showjumper. He is the brother of Alwin Schockemöhle, another leading German rider. He was three times European Champion on his best horse Deister. In 1990, Schockemöhle was secretly recorded poling horses, a practice which involves rapping a horse's legs with a pole to train it to jump higher. Poling is forbidden by the International Equestrian Federation, and spot checks were subsequently carried out at several other German training establishments.

So he's back, 131 in the 3rd Test v the Indians with the BBC highlighting he's poor run of form recently, 16 months of failure I think they wrote. I've always thought that he could get in to a run like shown above simply as he moves so much on the crease that if his timing is just slightly out he could go early on, 7 scores below 20 show that. But when the planets line up, the glint in his eye becomes alight, boy this lad knows how to score. He is a run machine...!!

Can't keep a good man down they say, lets hope his runs dry up by the time we face him next hey...?!?<laugh><laugh><laugh>

And so to the historic win for England against India earlier today, only the 2nd time they have been beaten at home in 8 years...!! Good ole Jimmy Anderson, the King of Swing was at his most menacing best taking 3-17, ably supported by Jack Leach taking 4-76 as they skittled their hosts out for 192 to claim a 227 run victory...<applause><applause><applause>

I remember when we played India and India were 0-4 and all out for 57, Jim Laker doing the damage. Him and Tony Lock, two spinners who caused havoc for the opposition; what a team. I can only recall one of the Indian batsmen, a P Roy I think. Not sure if it was the same era but we also had fast bowler Freddie Truman and medium fast Statham. I think Frank Tyson followed in Truman's shoes

That Anderson over was absolutely sensational, he raises the bar so often. It’ll be interesting to see if Broad can respond with something similarly special next time out.

So, a defeat to 317 runs then, bowled out for less than 300 in total for both innings with the spinners taking all 10 wickets in the 4th innings...!! The Indians were always going to bounce back, they are way too good not to be super competitive in their own back yard, but I just cant help myself thinking the home groundsmen made sure that this track would spin, and spin from the off...

Even if England had won the toss and battered first, I don't think they would have scored the 329 that India did, maybe 100 short of that at around the 200 run mark the very most so that score dosn't put the home side out of it by any way you look at it. And with the Indians boasting the best spin bowler around at the moment in Ashwin ably supported by spinners that are far better than ours, I think they Indian board took the 'home advantage' literally too much and over prepared a pitch to take spin from ball one. I heard Sunil Gavaskar on commentary say that there was nothing wrong with the track, just apply yourself correctly and you will score runs. Well Sunil, if England had faced full toss deliveries, half-way trackers and a bowling attack that served up buffet bowling balls, then yeah, a score of 300+ is on. But they didn't...!!

Ultimately, the Indians outplayed us in all departments, and that's the main reason for the defeat which is what happened in the first Test, we outplayed them. I just hope that the next Test a Day-Nighter produces a bit more of an even contest, with the better side winning...

Yesterday's Rugby Union 6-Nations clash between between France and Wales was quite the most incredible game of Rugby I have ever watched. It looked impossible for Wales to lose this after leading 20-30 with just 5-minutes to go. A spate of sendings-off at a very late stage (Red Card for a French player, and 2 Welshman sent-off shortly after) seem to set the stage for the amazing finish between the two depleted sides. France got to 27-30 when the final stage went into the 'red' time indicator phase. Somehow, France kept the play going and then went over in the far corner for the winning try, 32-27! Conversion was missed, not that it mattered.

You had to feel sorry for Wales, they had this game well and truly in the bag to win the Grand Slam. They can still be 6-Nations champions though, but it's just not the same as Grand Slam winners.

In short. one wouldn't write a novel on these lines; the writer would be laughed out of court.
