There I was thinking that people packed in smoking because they knew that it was bad for their health, and let’s not get started on foetal alcohol syndrome or cirrhosis of the liver or mouth and throat cancer brought on by consistent and excessive alcohol consumption.

Cheers EJK, looks like i'm ****ed then.

As to whether advertising works it's quite simple to see that it does. About 6 years ago i was reading an article that had surveyed consumers etc and they claimed that if Coca Cola stopped advertising it would take more than 10 years before they noticed a significant drop in market share. Now CC are very good, we all base our image of Santa from their advertisments.

My dad didn't smoke or drink and I lost him to throat cancer in 99.

I don't beleive things cause cancer. I beleive things can trigger it. It is after all a mutation of a healthy cell. Exposure to something you don't normally encounter I think every bit as dangerous than that of things you encounter frequently. Lot about cancer we don't know and lot we take for a given.

I've worked in pubs, drank in them my whole life. Never met anyone with cancer attributed to alcohol consumption. But those who are literally yellow with failing livers, many.

I smoke btw, are they are unhealthy? That has come as a shock not, I must quit straight away.

I know most people stopped due to cost. That old question has had the **** polled out of it for over a decade. Evey person I know has quit has put it to cost. I didn't get up yesterday. If it looks like a **** and smells like a ****, it's usually a ****. Everything points to cost in regards to the public quitting in droves. It happening following huge tax hikes should be enough to make people realise.

I tend to agree that numbers who smoked have dropped as a result of the price hikes. Not sure waht you're paying in the UK but they're around 20 - 25 quid a pack over here.

    As to cancer...
I've often thought that we all live with it, all probably have it in some way, yet it seems to manifest when the doctors cut you open. Stupid theory i knoe but a small part of me wonders whether exposure to air increases it's growth rate as most that i know that have succumbed to it seem to go downhill very fast once the exploratory surgery has been performed.

I don’t think you’re getting this. I’m saying that alcohol, fast food, cigarettes have been medically proven to be hazardous to health. It matters not a jot that smoking and drinking haven’t affected you personally or anyone you know. So it goes back to what I said in my original post. Is it ethical that these sorts of products should be advertised by sports people, who by the nature of their work are promoting a healthy lifestyle?
And if you want a group of people who stopped smoking due to health concerns, look no further than the medical profession itself. They understood the science and virtually universally stopped. I used to smoke. I stopped for many reasons, but cost wasn’t one of them.

Exposure is the magic word I think mate. For example I think a person can smoke their whole life. Only one of those cigarettes will give them cancer, they just up the odds by smokin more cigs

But I've answered that with bells on to the best o my opinion, here's me thinking you were leading this somewhere else. Probably why I'm not getting it.

Just to add, I've never said they are good for your health nor have I said they're not bad for your health.

I’m certainly not here to argue mate as I try not to fall out with anyone, least of all someone I’ve talked to in an internet message board that I’ve probably never met. I just try and encourage a healthy debate about things. I’ve always thought that the vast majority of us Sunderland supporters are intelligent people!

Not just cancer, smoking hugely increases the chances of COPD. Which as is now acknowledged is a contributing factor if you catch Covid19 making it more likely you will die.

To be fair, I think this Nufc shirt was quite good, I'd enjoy seeing them in it.
