I agree with you. But if the government banned the use of coal, the steel industry (as one example) would suffer. Then the headline would be "Evil Tory government stick the knife into ailing British steel industry". The sensible thing to do would be to allow them to continue using coal, on the understanding that they research a new viable, sustainable method. Like in everything else, there has to be balance.

I'd imagine that creating enough of that would be far more expensive than can be afforded atm unfortunately given the situation we're in.

Presumably reopening mines is the cheap short term option.

I think you will find paid holiday legislation was introduced in 1938 by a government led by a Tory, Neville Chamberlin.

This will cost far more lives than Covid in the long term if action is not taken now. We have witnessed nations start wars for oil production rights, just imagine what will happen when it is food and water shortages at stake. There is absolutely no reason to open coal mines. They are from the past. The future has to be renewable and the technology is there to do this.

In most cases, renewables can replace fossil fuels. But that is clearly not the case, currently, for the steel industry. So what do we do? Abandon steel production? Expensively import steel from other places, where fossil fuels are still allowed?

You're probably right but unfortunately we have to prioritise dealing with Covid and it's just not realistic to be spending huge figures on future tech when we're deep in a hole.

If Covid had never happened and they were reopening mines I'd agree with you.

You lost me at the first sentence, they've littrally handed out billions in dodgy illegal govt contracts without a single thought for the ecconamy. They spent more on a failed track and trace using a 30 quid excel program than labour's entire spending plans for the NHS' which would have apparently 'ruined' the country. You'll buy any old crap <laugh>

It's still a social policy is it not? The argument isn't who brought it in. You used sarcasm to surgest social policy has repeatedly failed, I presented examples of social policy that have not only been successfully but shaped our way of living in which even the social policy haters like you enjoy with Glee's of ignorance.

Must say its a bit daft to try to shift this into a party pissing contest with somebody who isn't even party aligned <laugh><doh>

What crap am I buying then? I've offered a balanced argument, based on the obvious need that any government has to satisfy a multitude of disparate voices, rather than just spouting rhetoric.

Yes, there are plenty of things, in terms of the contracts they have awarded and the handling of things like track and trace, for which they can be criticised.
But that's a completely different issue to balancing economic considerations against environmental ones.

Are you talking the sort of balance that Thatcher used against coal and shipbuilding in the NE.

That was something that may have become relevant in the conversation, yes. But, on the other hand, not really because what she created was an imbalance in the economic importance of different areas of the country, whereas this is the need to weigh one aspect of policy against another (in this case sustaining the steel industry versus environmental policies).

I'm delusional. You don't know what you're talking about. Where have I claimed to be a Tory? At what point have I exhibited any selfishness? What do I have to pay off?
I hate political rhetoric, no matter which direction it sways in and your comments on this subject are loaded with it. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle.
