Paul Cook and Bristol City: What do we know so far? Is it likely to happen?

Bristol City are on the hunt for a new manager again after Dean Holden was sacked by the club on Tuesday night.

A run of six consecutive defeats and just three wins in their last 13 Championship games led to the club pulling the trigger, meaning Holden’s tenure is over.

Paul Cook has emerged as one of the early potential candidates, having been out of a job since he left Wigan in the summer.
We’ve outlined exactly what we know so far and examined whether he’s likely to take charge at Ashton Gate.

What do we know so far?
With Holden dismissed on Tuesday evening, his former assistants Paul Simpson and Keith Downing have taken charge while the search for a new boss goes on.

It is understood that the club did not have any candidates lined up, preferring to wait until the 41-year-old departed to make any future arrangements.
According to Gregor MacGregor from the Bristol Post, Cook is one of the early names to have been mentioned concerning the vacant head coach role.

He’s not the only one to be linked, however, with both Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton and MK Dons manager Russell Martin also touted as potential candidates.
It is thought that all options remain open as the Robins consider how to make their next steps.

A report from the Bristol Post has indicated that Cook was not deemed the right fit culturally when he was considered for the role in the summer and it is unclear whether that view has changed.

    Is it likely to happen?
From the outside, Cook would seem to be the ideal fit for City and someone that could come in and galvanise a dressing room that looks lost at the moment.
However, the fact that he was dismissed as not the right fit in the summer suggests that this may not happen.

Mark Ashton, Jon Lansdown, and Steve Lansdown are still the three men likely to make that final decision and if they were against Cook in the summer, then there’s certainly an argument to be made that there’s no reason they should change their mind now.

If that is the case, that would be a real shame because the 53-year-old looks like a fantastic candidate and deserving of the role.

Paul Cook is a experienced man with a successful history, he seems to be tough but fair, he has his own principles and has the balls to tell Ashton to do one but enough common sense to want to work with the man in a respectful, mutual, shared partnership.

Why is that not the right culture for our club, a football man in charge rather than a bloated suit ?

When you this piece the reality of our situation hits home as does the reason why we are where we are.

SL has wasted a fortune on poor choices before and looks set to do so again, you would have thought that maybe he might be thinking, perhaps it's about time we tried a different approach this time with our choice of manager, somebody who can run HIS team HIS way.

Because SL's/Ashton's way is not working.

We appoint Lee Johnson as head coach, his history, Oldham & Barnsley, no promotions, no cup honours any level, we appoint Dean Holden as head coach, his history, Oldham & Bristol City number 2, no promotions, no cup honours any level, wasted 5 years.( No digs)

We reject Paul Cook, his history, 3 promotions, Portsmouth, Wigan & Chesterfield, won FAI Cup Final twice, he doesn't fit in with our culture.

It now looks as if we are looking elsewhere and looking at another Mark Ashton cronie and yes man, when will we ever learn.

We might just choose Paul Cook and his proven winning culture, I've just seen a flying pig overhead, I think.

    Injury news
Keith Downing has confirmed the following. Updates from him to come in a second.
    @GeeMacGee
Injury news from this afternoon: Joe Williams to see a specialist on his hamstring while Owura Edwards has suffered an ankle injury. #BristolCity do have Steven Sessegnon available again this weekend though, after he was on the bench against Reading.

    Keith Downing on Reading loss
We were coming off the back of a very difficult Saturday against Watford. A little bit of shell shock from that one and we were looking for a bit of a response from that one. I thought for 40 minutes it was a close affair and then suddenly you're 2-0 down at half-time and the old habits have risen again. And we're asking the guys to score two and three and we haven't done that in recent times. A little bit of belief has ebbed away. Reading have won the game, they're in the top six, we're finding it difficult and ultimately Dean paid the price after Tuesday's result, along with the five other defeats.

KD on after the Reading game and losing his job
I was very grateful for Dean asking me to come in and help and support. So we were all massively disappointed with his dismissal and we feel responsible - the staff and the players - it's not just Dean; Dean carries the can but we all felt that we were responsible for that as well. We've done our best in difficult circumstances. I think Dean has conducted himself in impeccable manner over a very difficult period with covid, like everyone else has, but we've also had a substantial amount of injuries which has really, really effected the season. and in his seven month tenure it was a difficult period for him and I thought, as a first-time manager, he coped with the situation really well. But ultimately it's a business where results matter. And we're not naive enough and realise that results in recent times have not been good enough after a fantastic start we've lost some key players not just in the short term but the long term and that's had the knock on effect and culminated in what's happened in recent times.

So Williams being 'fatigued' was more bullshit, it was another hamstring.

From what I have seen so far of Sessegnon I cannot get enthused by that news, but good news for him obviously.

Barnsley are bang in form their only defeat in their last 6 was a narrow 0-1 to Chelsea in the FA cup. They have won 3 and drawn 2 including a 0-2 win at Brentford, whereas we have lost the last 6.

    Another defeat all day long.

Barnsley are a very good side under Ismael. They've done ever so well since he went there and but for a poor start to the season they could be serious contenders for a playoff spot. They should have beaten Chelsea on the night in that Cup game.

In fact, if they keep their their current league form going, they could still be dark horses for a top 6 finish. Needless to say I hope you win tomorrow.
