yeah I was listening to onle of those talking head types who was hammering on about all men have egging on their mate as he harrassed a woman in a bar. one of those thin edge of the wedge type thing that proves all men are pigs. I tried to recall ever egging anyone on while a woman said no or wasn't impressed and clearly I must be broing as for the life of me i couldn't think of one occasion where I did that. It's funny cos you might say that if their parents did ther jobs right a man would already be educated lol. Maybe what you should have said is parents just don't hand out certs for feminists to check unfortunately. Now what would have had an explosion of rage !
Australia has Intentional Torts, one of which is Duty of Care ( Negligence). A school could be sued for emotional distress of children in it's care because mental health is considered equal to physical health.
The problem is, this sort of **** detracts from actual action. I've got a wife and a daughter the sort of things that coukd happen to them are terrifying, but groups of women screaming all men are bastards does nothing to help. They just end up being lumped in with the tinfoil hat brigade, dismissed by the general populace with a roll of the eyes. I'm unsure what brings my piss to the boil more the ranting lunatics or the faux outrage and ridiculous token gestures made to satisfy the ranting lunatics.
The explosion was because it is a minefield. I think videos about sexual consent, like that school did, are an essential part of sex ed. or whatever it's called these days, providing it's aimed age appropriately. They should have stopped there. Like you say, you can't assign blame to a whole section of any community, in this case half of the community, and not expect a backlash. I've only just heard of the book White Fragility which claims all white people are racist. This Australian story is the sex/gender version of that. The worrying thing is that the lunatic fringe are getting more and more vocal and even more worrying is that they are being listened to.
I'm unsure of the video, but consent and respect should go hand in hand, if you are taught a certain level of respect, then consent becomes less of an issue. I agree the lunatics are gaining more and more traction. Social media has alot to answer for.
With regard to the video, I've always been sceptical of sex education. Add to that whether it's aimed age appropriately and then what exactly is being taught. In my day sex education was covered in Biology and that was that. I do think that these days though, kids are more advanced in all areas. Their bodies grow at the same rate as bodies have always grown but their minds seem to be far more advanced and inquisitive - very generalised statement I know. I think some children are ready far sooner for more information than I was, for example and are afraid to ask their parents. I'm trying not to be judgemental here just going on what I've seen but some parents aren't equipped to give children the right kind of guidance or information they need so getting a video in school about how 'no means no' and what 'signals' are and what they mean could be the only time in their lives that they will ever be aware of that. I'm talking a small minority here who need special help or advice because like you I agree that the vast majority of boys and men know exactly how to behave around the opposite sex. I don't have girls so I've never had to teach a girl how to behave around boys but again experience tells me the vast majority know what good behaviour is. Social media has a lot to answer for.
The internet is a wonderful resource - the amount of information at one's fingertips is astonishing, but there is a dark side and social media are a major contributor to it. In the past the village idiot or your local sociopath would have been isolated but now they have access to others of their ilk. This bolsters their position in their eyes, and finding others think the same way convinces them that their personal opinions are valid - without the need for any critical self-examination. So you go from the crazy but relatively harmless Flat-Earthers, to the people that believe covid is an evil plot to enslave humanity perpetrated by some mysterious and ubiquitous "They" and so endanger all of us through their resistance to containment measures. Real problems, such as gender inequality, racism, the political use of police powers etc can only be resolved through continued dialogue. Unfortunately there are those who simply want war - not dialogue, and their belligerent stance only triggers a defensive mechanism amongst their targets and this solves nothing in the long run.
I think its two fold, any additional information and possibly clarity can only be a good thing. If it sets one lad on a different path then it's worth doing. However as can be seen from recent reports schools do little to enforce or investigate any complaints. Showing a video, then letting the kids do what they want with little chance of enforcement sends a very different message. It's all happy clappy bullshit. Simple message don't do this, if you do, the punishment is severe.
True, the Internet is generally boss, no other resource in the world can you click on in your own hone to find out how nuclear power works only to find yourself two hours later reading about different breeds of horse. I liken Facebook to the rough ale House in the town, but on a massive scale. Was once pleasant, but more and more arse holes tip up, so less and less regular people go in. After a few years it's populated exclusively by arse holes, the only problem is that people actually listen to there opinion, while the moderate person is ignored.
I learned a new phrase today to be added to the list that reads, so far, like this - woke, cancel culture, snowflake, virtue signalling, non-binary, microaggresion, Clout Chaser - someone who associates with famous people or popular opinions on social media in order to gain notoriety or become popular themselves.
I'd like to think it would never happen in this country but who knows. Some of the stories I'm reading are getting weirder and weirder eg PETA saying calling animals pets is patronising. According to them, animals are sentient beings and shouldn't be referred to or thought about as inanimate objects. I'm off to ask the dog ......
I agree, but we’ve become a completely divided society, since 2016 it’s grown at a staggering pace and now the faux culture war is being stoked daily by certain newspapers, politicians and shills for those with their own agendas. SM is full of the gullible who’ve chosen their ‘side’ and will defend it irrespective of facts, rational thinking or reality. They’re enhanced and amplified by bots and paid shills, organised by numerous sources, from Russia through to our actual Govt. As a result nuance has been lost for many. You’re either with them or against them, irrespective of the subject matter.
I think the word 'pet' is a lovely name for a sentient being. Obviously PETA have never made it as far North as Newcastle.
