I'm a shark fan mate... watched way to many docs, and even as a kid, had a weird obsession about them.

We were on hols in Newquay in 1975 ( I think) ... anyway... year that Jaws was released and shark hysteria is prime ... we were at a hotel called the Trebarwith which has gardens on the cliff top ... lovely day and sunbathing when we hear sirens go off ... some old boy let us look through his binoculars... a 14 ft basking shark and a blue shark are trailing a fishing boat towards the harbour so they clear the beaches ... silhouettes in the water through the binocs were awesome ... scramble in the harbour as every little fishing boat goes out trying to catch them ... they didn't ... but the memories still live with me and always will ... love sharks ... in awe ... would love to go in a cage with Great Whites ...but bit worried I'd **** my speedos <laugh>

We went to the same hotel every year from being 8 or 9 to 16 ... why I got into surfing ... named it more for Ponky's reference than owt else ... in case he might know it ... it sits above Towan beach ... context it everything, but that's beyond you ... never mind.

I can imagine if that had been your story Piskie....oh yeah, I knew the guy that owned that hotel, he use to have a stall down on the market with me, his wife run the place and he supplied all the organic veg for the chef. Anyway on that day, the guy out in the fishing boat in 1975 his name was Martin Brody, we often went surfing together, and that night I took some shark fin soup home for tea. In summer a group of us got together and set up a tourist trade of ride in a cage to see a great white, we lost a few of the buggers, but the sharks were pretty tidy at leaving no evidence.

Must admit I was completely enthralled by Jaws ... book way better than the film (which I thought was great) ... read a lot of books .. Ron and Valerie Taylor are names that spring to mind and a book called The Shark Attack Files that listed every attack in the world since records began ... there were 3 in the UK ... one was a twat that got bit by a Blue that he had caught and hauled onto his boat ... Close To Shore is a good read ... depicts the events that inspired Benchley to write Jaws in the first place <cheers>
