Looks as though greed is being stepped up to a higher level, although not in Germany or France. Football was changed when clubs bought into the Murdoch deal with Sky, effectively breaking the chain that had seen a Northampton or Watford rising from the bottom to the top leagues in the country. Fine for the owners and shareholders who see a top club as an investment opportunity, which is not how the fans see things. Taking money away from the little clubs which would happen under this proposal, and giving it to those with plenty already seems to be a common theme these days.

    This stinks!!

one way you could prevent this is, if a player decides to play for one of these clubs then not only can they no longer play for their country, but if they ever get released or want to move back to the football league/prem then they will need to serve a two year total ban from football. That might dissuade some (hopefully most) players from signing up...imagine if a player is out of favour or gets injured and wants to leave the clubs to find football, a rule like this might make them think twice?

not sure how legal this is though

anyhow, this is just greedy clubs wanting to get richer - wish they would go to hell

All about greed and being selfish from these clubs.

No thought for the fans or other clubs in their own countries:

The reason why football is the most important and loved sport across the globe is because it is a simple game anyone can play and anyone can enjoy. Even in this era of ‘super clubs’, we still see incredible moments, results and upsets. And even if results don’t go your way, well, there’s always next season. The ‘super league’ proposal leaked today cuts across all the things that make football great. It diminishes competition. It pulls up the drawbridge. It is designed for and by a small elite. But worst of all, it ignores the fans. Football in empty stadiums hasn’t been the same over the last year. I can’t wait to get back to games. But this proposal risks shutting the door on fans for good, reducing them to mere spectators and consumers. The clubs involved in this proposal should rethink immediately. And if they don’t, they should face the consequences of their actions. Because football without fans is nothing. Keir Starmer

France's President Emmanuel Macron said he "welcomes the position of French clubs to refuse to participate" in a European Super League "that threatens the principle of solidarity and sporting merit."
A statement from the French presidency added: "The French state will support all the steps taken by the LFP [France's professional leagues governing body], FFF [France's football association], Uefa and Fifa to protect the integrity of federal competitions, whether national or European."

I think let them go. Could be the best thing for the leagues. It always looked that even if they stayed the Prem would be cut by 2,4 or 6 teams with the Championship split with top half and bottom half of Prem. Could be the best thing that happens for us as we will not be strugglers but competitors and Could bring the game back to the people.
Let's look at the positives in this :emoticon-0148-yes:

I wonder if this will go the way of rugby when the Northern teams left the Rugby Union over professionalism. A new variant of football will develop.

Clubs that finished in the top three in the decade before the formation of the Premier League include Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Watford, Everton, Southampton, Aston Villa, West Ham and Crystal Palace. None of them have had a say since the PL was formed simply because the money was channeled into the hands of the few.
I am not sure just how some of the fans from this new league will react. It is a bit different going to an away game in London from Manchester than going off to Italy or Spain. They will not have to go of course as it will be on a subscription channel at whatever price the Sky type channels can get away with.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has commented on the issue of plans for a European Super League with a brief statement on Twitter.

He wrote: "Plans for a European Super League would be very damaging for football and we support football authorities in taking action. They would strike at the heart of the domestic game, and will concern fans across the country.

"The clubs involved must answer to their fans and the wider footballing community before taking any further steps."

I hope that no one tells the Home Secretary that she could have all those European fans popping into the country every week. :emoticon-0108-speec

My view is if they sign up to it then wish them all the best but remove them from the pyramid and promote teams up through the leagues to fill the gaps

Also make it absolutely clear that when the greedy arseholes realise their mistake they can only rejoin the pyramid at National league level if of course they will accept them

As they will not be representing their relevant countries they will be banned from the existing world wide competions and as the players will be mercenaries they should banned from representing their countries in the World Cup etc

This move is fuelled by American owners of football clubs who have no concept of completion ie the WORLD baseball series is only open to AMERICAN teams, that tells you all you need to know

This move would enable great teams from the past to reestablish themselves as top teams AND give middle sized like for example WATFORD to compete on equal terms in the Prem

If these deluded morons think that anyone other than plastic fans who only watch football on TV will have any interest in a closed shop where no-one wins or loses when the can still watch real teams playing real matches in real stadiums then good luck to them they will need it

Goodbye Man City, Man United Liverpool, Chelsea Arenal and Spurs the only ones who will miss you will be your loyal, local fan base who have supported you through good times and bad, but then your owners don't even know you exist

    Some good points here....

Maybe if they go... we will be left with a more honest game.........closer to the supporters.... and all the plastic supporters can just watch their plastic clubs on Sky.......

Were will this league get the referees from? I can only imagine that they will bring some out of retirement or get them from non-FIFA countries such as Tuvalu.

Well if Boris is so worried, here's a little test for him. To broadcast in the UK, any TV company needs a licence from Ofcom. As prime minister, he surely has the power to revoke, or at least refuse renewal of, such licences - after all, his government have the power to make it illegal for a person to walk down a street with a placard.

The German clubs have not signed up to the European Super League because of their 50+1 rule. "Under German Football League [DFL] rules, football clubs will not be allowed to play in the Bundesliga if commercial investors have more than a 49 percent stake. In essence, this means that private investors cannot take over clubs and potentially push through measures that prioritise profit over the wishes of supporters." (Bundesliga website)

A pity that the Premier League do not have a similar rule!

I know the premier league (and Champions League) changed the equation, but at least you could still get there on merit. We had 5 seasons recently, Leicester and Blackburn won it. Heck, even Man City won it despite being in the third tier at some points since the premier league began. The fact the proposed Super League is closed is what really is the issue.

West Ham and Leicester could be in the top four this season, but wouldn't qualify. Man City have basically already won the title, what would other teams even have to play for now? Why should Everton build a shiny new stadium if they can't play in the top competition? What happens to the Portuguese or Dutch leagues if their champions never get to play the champions of England, Spain and Italy?

I know even the fans of the clubs that have signed up are against it, but what worried me is the millions of TV "fans" at home in Asia, Africa, and the Americas aren't bothered about the history of Man Utd vs Leeds Utd, or seeing how Norwich do next year. They quite fancy the idea of Man Utd playing Juventus and Barcelona each and every season.

It is good to see that the dynamic Oliver Dowden, Minister for Sport, and MP for Hertsmere is on the case. Writing in the Telelgraph yesterday he stated that things are "returning to normality" as some fans were scattered around Wembley. Clearly no one had kept him up to speed on what was being planned.

This has been suggested for years and my opinion has always been let them go... and kick them out. It would be a great opportunity to 'reset' the league and make it less money-dependent. Will be less interest in the league so therefore should be much less TV, so much less money being thrown around - which is mainly spent on players anyway! Bring in salary caps and more suitable FFP rules. Give a more level-playing field

If this goes ahead and the national leagues allow these teams to stay, all this does it make the big clubs bigger and stronger, and makes European football a closed shop (even more than it is now)! Hope FIFA, EUFA and the PL call their bluff and stays strong with expelling them
