Those clubs need to realise they need their respective leagues and competitors to have that product

you are clearly for clubs selling their own product and we already know how that goes .

It is exactly the principle of the closed shop and the destruction of dreams that caused the outcry.

Can't remember what it was and can't be arsed to search but he made a comment a couple of days ago that stuck two massive fingers up to all the clubs outside the ESL six but claimed it was what all fans wanted <laugh>

In the context of rising player wages and stagnating sustainable revenue streams yes. The monies brought about by oil clubs meant to compete other clubs have had to raise their wages. But as soon as the pandemic hit, the clubs have been hit big.

Because it's all about money, and more people world-wide will pay to watch them than most other clubs.

So in the eyes of the club owners then. There is no real problem bar reckless spending.

As I've said a few times already, the better solution to all this and one that fans would be onside with; a world wide capping of wages.

Do they? PSG & Bayern don’t have competition and do alright for themselves.

Exactly. No longer a sport. But the reputation these clubs were built on the history and the sporting achievements. Clubs have become cashcows for whose benefit? The owners to siphon hundreds of millions or to make money to support local communities. Would much of these profits from this super league have gone to communities of the North West? No, only reason for the super league is more money for the greedy owners.

Agree with the sentiment but I don't think it would be workable and doubt it would solve the problem.

I agree. But what I want to see is a realistic business model where all clubs spend within their means, not one where they're driven to try and find any way possible to screw more more money out of it.
Logically, that policy can only at best delay the inevitable disaster.
Ever-increasing spending over a finite income is not sustainable.
The only hope is to somehow cap excessive spending, though I've no idea how that can be effectively implemented.

This is where I have a problem with the thinking of these big club owners. Whilst they control the major audience, they do not exist on their own. They have to play in a product that has other teams. The football product involves fans, playersn(teams), coaches, owners and broadcasters. Owners cannot then assume they hold the power because if they did, they could have told the rest of us to suck it up and their backtracking has shown just as much.

Forming a super league to monopolize the product was very lazy of them. You have to think of the whole ecosystem.

Of course it wouldn't, they'd pay massive transfer fees, hugh sums to agents and the signing-on / bonus figures would go through the roof.

Any agreement would have to be extremely detailed to prevent the inevitable loopholes

I have no idea how the system currently works, but would now be a good time for the Premier League to pass proposals increasing payments to league, non-league and grassroots football? All PL clubs should be affected to show they're not greedy, but with the increased payments heavily skewed based on revenues, UEFA coefficient and to a lesser extent league Position, I.e. targetting the super 6? That way the owners are also punished without punishing the teams. The money could be earmarked for things like Stadiums (including existing stadium debt), training facilities, community projects etc. as well as league prize money to smoothen the money tree and help reduce/avoid reckless spending. Might help at least deal with some of the problems in the domestic game.

I like your idea of limiting what that money could be spent on.

Lower league clubs are no better when it comes to reckless spending, just on a smaller scale.

Pass more money down, they'll spend more so eliminating player purchasing and wages is a great suggestion in my book.

It has probably now dawned on the owners that they are mere custodians of loved century old institutions. Yes, make money out of it but you are not allowed to do with it what you like. They've been there long before you and will be around long after you leave. They are not playthings you can toss out as you please.

It has dawned on many supporters that their owners are just ****ty little men who just happen to have money. No better than them.
