I wonder if it may have been different if Johnson had been here from the start. If he’d had the ability to see them properly and give them game time? Hope we get to see more of them.

I hope so, but there is never an easy time to introduce fresh faces, you have to have courage, the opportunity has presented itself several times this season and each time he has bottled it. The day he hauled Younger off and left McFuz on was the low point of the season for me and set the ball rolling down a road that might yet cost us promotion.

Like anything though, the way to find out is to give them a go. In Youngers case, the player he would be replacing, either Wright or Onein, have been absolutely woeful lately. Ideal time to play him imo.

This is probably true. The tone of a lot of the stuff posted on Twitter and on here though seems to be suggesting that the well-performing u23s are going to instantly change how the first team performs and that's a massive assumption to make and a lot of pressure to put on players who are making the step up for the first time.

  8. I think he was signed to add creativity in midfield,as he was thought to be comfortable on the ball with ability to pass and to get some goals from midfield going forward. Can't fault the sentiment,as it's one of the things we've lacked all season.......Grant certainly can't get up and down,Scowen can't pass or shoot and Power has had to play full back most of the time. Thing is,apart from the odd moment,Winchester hasn't really stood up and taken his opportunity.

I get what you're saying but look at the bigger picture, the majority of players in the squad have been failures over the last 3 seasons, no other way of putting it imo. The so called senior pros. I'm sick of seeing them every week tbh. Johnson came in with a lot of gusto saying he isn't afraid to play youngsters etc. Just like most managers we've had the last 3 or 4 years, all fart and no ****e when it comes down to it. All my opinion of course.

Well, that's it, I am trying to consider the bigger picture. I doubt very much its just Johnson making the decision on whether to bring those players through. He should be getting reports from the age group coaches about these players. It could well be that its them telling him that they're not ready for the first team. That seems to be a more likely scenario to me than him persisting with a makeshift back four and underperforming midfielders if there are good enough players in the u23s.

****ing hell, here's another one with a @Wolfy big love reach around going on. He's a sly, back handed abusive prick, that constantly calls out players and staff for being pathetic, which is the comment I responded to. Guess you must be a bit thick yourself not to notice that.

But its the only available alternative at hand to having to play Burge, McFadzean and Power, behind a midfield of Scowen and Winchester anybody who thinks that is a formation that will get us promoted is an even more massive assumption imo.

Give Winchester his dues, in the 17 games he's appeared for us we got 35 points. He must be doing something right.

I agree, so the only logical conclusion is that the coaching staff don't think that the u23s players are ready/good enough for the first team.

The only logical conclusion I can see is they are getting it badly wrong. Recent results indicate to me that something more than bad luck is at play somewhere in this halcyon structure you so describe..

Both Winchester and Scowen are reasonable at this level imo, but to play them together as a midfield pairing is optimistic to say the least.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. The only thing I'll say is, having spent a lot of time listening to and learning from coaches/managers at Step 4, their judgement on such matters is rarely wrong. So I'd expect coaches at League 1 level to be even more capable of judging it accurately.

Of course they can, everyone is capable of mistakes. But, do I think the entire experienced coaching staff of a League 1 club, under an owner like KLD, would persist with playing players out of position or underperforming players if there were more suitable players languishing in the u23s? No, I certainly and unequivocally don't.
