Not sure if this is being reported in the UK, but quite significant news about the origin of Covid-19.

COVID-19 could have first begun circulating outside China, mathematical study suggests.

COVID-19 viruses found in Europe, the U.S. and India could be older than that first identified in the city of Wuhan, suggesting the pandemic probably originated outside China, a mathematical study has concluded.

However, Pei and Yau concluded that their calculations, using the k-mer natural vector method, suggested with 91 percent certainty that SARS-CoV-2 had begun circulating among humans in Europe, India or the U.S. before Wuhan.

COVID-19 could have first begun circulating outside China, mathematical study suggests

COVID-19 viruses found in Europe, the U.S. and India could be older than that first identified in the city of Wuhan, suggesting the pandemic probably originated outside China, a mathematical study has concluded.

Researchers from China analysed genomes of the virus from around the world to compare them with a bat-borne version, which is the most closely related yet found in nature to SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the current pandemic.

They reported that examples found in five countries – France, England, India, the U.S. and the Netherlands – were closer to the original animal pathogen than the first cases identified in humans in Wuhan. That suggests the viruses from those places had experienced a shorter evolutionary journey and therefore probably emerged earlier, the two mathematicians concluded.

The origin of the pandemic is a highly charged issue, controversially politicized by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to COVID-19 as "the China virus." It was first identified in Wuhan during the last days of 2019, although subsequent studies have suggested it may have been present elsewhere sometime before that.

The new research was undertaken by Shaojun Pei and Stephen Yau, from Tsinghua University in Beijing and published in Acta Mathematica Scientia. It comes on the heels of a high-profile World Health Organization (WHO) investigation that aimed to close in on how the pandemic began.

After a trip to Wuhan, the WHO's team of experts, working alongside Chinese scientists, said they were unable to state definitively what had led COVID-19 to pass into humans, nor where it had happened, but that it had most likely traveled through two animal species first.

However, Pei and Yau concluded that their calculations, using the k-mer natural vector method, suggested with 91 percent certainty that SARS-CoV-2 had begun circulating among humans in Europe, India or the U.S. before Wuhan.

Donald Trump and his supporters will be seething ... "China Flu" rolled off the tongue so much more easily than "SARS-CoV-2 variants" ...

... but seriously, always thought the origins were more complex than the original bat eating or China lab premises...

I've always stated that I believe the virus had been around alot longer than we originally believed. Hence why I personally have never blamed China. The thing is with the virus, you can only date it from the date you officially identify it, in whatever strain it's formed at the time. No one in Europe or the US would have been looking for Covid. I can remember being really poorly in 2019 with some bug, I never went to the doctors, I just lived with it for 2 weeks. Many people do the same thing every single day, oh I'll get over it, and generally do - it's only once something more severe happens that people start sitting up and taking a bit more notice. Quite simply no one was expecting a pandemic, and if you had dared to mention such 18 months ago, you would have probably been laughed at.

There is evidence that this virus started in several locations at similar times, just that, for whatever reasons, many countries are not looking at other possibilities because it is easier to blame China and not investigate further.
I lived in Wuhan for 5 years and left there to change job in the summer of 2019 and still know lots of people that live there. One of those Chinese friends is adamant that it was brought in from outside and refuses to listen to any other views. At first, I thought he was a little crazy with his thinking, but as time progresses I have listened to his thinking and he does have a point (he believes it was brought into China during the world military games that were staged in Wuhan in October of 2019).
The idea that people were getting ill with pneumonia-like illnesses in late 2019 and any deaths at that time would have been recorded as pneumonia or the flu, and it was only once the outbreak in Wuhan struck that the first cases were recorded, yet there is evidence of people being ill with similar cases across Europe in late 2019.

I do feel the worst of this is now over for the UK, but I do fear that if too many go on their much needed holidays abroad it will be inviting new strains into the country, or imported through visitors coming into the UK.

I think the G7 has already confirmed your fears, regarding travel and meeting. We have the biggest outbreak the world has seen in India a population of over 1 Billion, and we are allowing delegates into the UK from there! Ok, fair enough, tests were in place which identified they have it, but sometimes I feel we in the UK are going round in circles and not learning from the lessons of the past continually.

In regards to Wuhan, I remember seeing reports (medical journals I think it was) that Italy had the virus way before it was indentified in China. I don't think it spread as quick as they suggest, I think it was already here. A bit like the Kent virus, by the time France were taking any actions against the UK to stop the spread, I was already suggesting it's too late, it will already have spread to Europe, such is the traffic for an Island nation.

I was reading this morning how two of the Indian delegation at the G7 were tested positive. How anyone thought it ok to let anyone in from India at this time is beyond incompetance. But I expect the thought of a trade deal with Indian was more important than their being limited to a zoom conference, which they now are, ironically. I wonder how many of that circle at the conference have been in contact with those infected, or at the hotel where they are staying etc, this is how this virus will never be eradicated and the evidence that lessons are not being learnt, continue.
