well I expect the tories will reinforce the perception now and pile in with resources.

At this point it looks very rosy in the garden for the tories.

The more the SNP hold the better as well for the tories. Keep the noisy scots on the referendum trail and out of uk politics. without scotland the labour party cannot get back to power imo. The more fractured sctoland is or better yet goes and leaves then its tories for 10 more years min.

Labour is an old concept. it is irrelevant for young people working in services. Social democracy is not a labour movement after all IMO.

anyway, as result roll in it looks like a resounding endorsement of the tories and brexit.

I subscribe to the idea that a government can only be as good as it's opposition. It's a good explanation for what we're seeing now. The Tories have no real opposition and Labour are looking to be unelectable. I'd like to see a really strong Labour leader. It's the only way things will improve imo.

I don't follow politics enough to put forward a name from the Labour camp but the ones who are wheeled out constantly like Dianne Abbott and Dawn Butler aren't a good advertisement for the party when they struggle to get the basic facts right.

Exactly this. Labour are a joke and that's why lots of areas are seeing Tory elections happening for the first time in years or ever in history.

    Theres strong and theres lunatic.

Corbyn was utterly unelectable as he could not appeal to anyone in the "middle" whoever they are. He got a bounce against may purely because even he could look better than her but a lot of kids were completely disillusioned bu hin and his antics after that election and it showed in 2019 l.

Starmer is useless as he hasnt realised that it's better to soundbite and score points than support anything. He is in a vast minority to a Tory government who can do anything. Go score points.

It's simple and populist but all that works now.

Ah but what is the reason for that?

I mean the Tories are ****ing terrible as well. They've had so many controversies over the last 2 years its hard to understand what would they have to do to lose voter confidence.

I would also suggest that the sterotypical 'Labour' voter no longer exists and that Labour trying to rely on traditional heartlands is not going to work anymore. Is there such a thing as 'working class' anymore? Seems that its been replaced with 'Lower class' who would rather overlook corruption and the like so long as they can get something out of it

Imo people are doing it on the promise of funding coming back if they have a Tory controlled situation.

Aka the worst kind of bribery/threats

Yeah, populist works. It's been shown to work countless times now.

If the outcome is to be elected. If you outcome is to have a good government it's a disaster

Keir Starmer went to visit a black Christian church group which has helped their whole community during the pandemic including encouraging the black residents in their communities to go and get vaccinated, to congratulate them on their efforts. He posted the visit on Instagram and was roundly accused of being homophobic, transphobic - you name it - by some leftists because the Church doesn't allow a religious ceremony for same sex marriage, telling him he should be ashamed of himself in the process. What did he do? Took the pictures down and apologised for 'making a mistake ' in going there. That's not the strong leadership we need.

No because that sort of people don't vote labour anyway.

Stick a big religious sticker on your forehead and you win votes from all Faiths

Shrug and double down on the nut jobs and ask what did they do for people during the pandemic and dare them

Maybe he was advised to go to a black project somewhere, inclusivity and all that, but didn't bank on one of the other 'minority groups' taking offence. You can't please everyone so don't try to but at least have the courage of your conviction having selected who you will be photographed with in the first place.

Thinking about a new laptop as the battery in mine is done and requires near constant life support from a plug socket

I have an oldish MacBook Pro, considering either a MacBook Air or a Microsoft surface (probably the 2 in 1 jobby that they make)

Anyone got any experience with either or other recommendations?

What do you want to do on said lap top?

The intended use generally matters most.

Storage, processing power, screen size, streaming ability, battery life are all variable.

True enough. Just general use, work which is mostly MS Office, web browsing and Zoom at the moment, then personal use so internet again, streaming, media, and I'll also be using it for photo editing software and storing images. I don't really need anything mega ... just looking at the cheapest macbook air which is £1000 and will probably do me. I guess it's important that it's light and portable as well so good battery life would be nice

If you opt to get a battery, be careful if you go for a compatible, most don't tend to hold much charge

Sadly this is the way of modern politics. People would rather watch interminable Netflix series than actually take an interest in the real world, so with a large portion of the electorate being politically illiterate and uninterested voting is based on media performance and "personality" rather than manifesto.
Therefore we end up with people being more comfortable with a bumbling ****wit like Boris (see below) rather than someone they can't relate to, regardless of how good the latter may be.
With Brexit and the attendant flag-waving jingoism, plus the prospect of a Tory government for the foreseeable future, I feel almost as disenfranchised from the political direction of my country as I did during the Thatcher era.
We've only been out of Europe for five minutes and already we're back to fishing wars and the "send a gunboat" diplomacy of the jolly old Empire to ward off the Frogs.
It's like being back in the 50's. No wonder I'm a grumpy old bastard.
This is our leader, what could possibly go wrong?

Modern Britain eh? What a ****ing joke.
Well, at least the Tories are nowhere here in Wales, for what it's worth.

    Speaking of a crazy world...
I read about a group of indigenous people in Brazil using bows and arrows to ward off a helicopter carrying health workers because they'd been fed vaccine misinformation on Whatsapp on their mobile phones.

I'm all in favour for some sort of test before your allowed to vote. Nothing complex but something to actually see if you know what your voting for, pick your favourite policy, what would you do in this situation something to break the monotonous continuation of this political **** show.

It comes to something when you coukd have a great politician, an absolute expert in their field who would do wonders for the country kept out out power because the other lad has a nice smile.
