U23 have a massive game today, Younger and Hawkes – who has been nominated for April’s Player of the Month award in Premier League 2 – again starts for the young Lads in a 1pm ko today v Stoke in the final league game to secure a place in the play-offs of the Second Division of Premier League 2, with Tom Flanagan and Jake Vokins also in the starting XI as they near a return to full fitness.

SUNDERLAND: Patterson, Richardson, Vokins, Wilding, Younger, Flanagan, Hawkes, Wearne, Harris, Neil, Trialist.

Is there an actual rule that prevents the name of the trialist being put on the team sheet?

I think he has only ever replied to me once.
He usually comes on here, launches a grenade and runs away <laugh>

Could be wrong but I think its just convention. In the same way that in the days of professionals and amateurs appearing in the same team, the professional's name would just be recorded using their surname (or with initials following the surname) whereas the amateur's initials would be given before the surname. I think its also done so that other clubs/teams aren't aware that a particular playing is having a trial at a particular club.

I think in cricket amateurs were designated Mr so and so, whereas pros were just called So and so. Quite right too.

I think it was just those with titles that had anything other than surnames and initials listed. Having moved house recently, my copy of The Social History of English Cricket is in storage so I can't check that but this is from Wikipedia:
On scorecards, the amateur would be listed initials first and a professional teammate initials last: for example, P. B. H. May and Laker, J. C. In one notably laughable instance, when the professional Fred Titmus was walking out to bat, the public announcer stated that there was a mistake in the printed scorecards being sold at the ground: "F. J. Titmus should read Titmus, F. J."
