Just seen an article about how desperate some Majorcans are to get the British back. Was only recently that they were talking about the need to limit tourism as they were ruining the place (and I do understand that to some extent), but just proves the old adage....Be careful what you wish for as you may get it.

I read the same article this morning and thought exactly the same. I bet they never thought 2 years ago that they would be desperate for the drunken Brits to turn up and trash Magaluf.....

My Spanish friends who live in Majorca (the beautiful part, well away from the hideous “touristy” bits) say they realise tourism is a necessary evil for the money it brings, but hope that the “old days” of drunken louts may not return ...... personally, I’m not so sure ..... :emoticon-0112-wonde

Not sure if this is being reported in the UK, but quite significant news about the origin of Covid-19.

COVID-19 could have first begun circulating outside China, mathematical study suggests.

COVID-19 viruses found in Europe, the U.S. and India could be older than that first identified in the city of Wuhan, suggesting the pandemic probably originated outside China, a mathematical study has concluded.

However, Pei and Yau concluded that their calculations, using the k-mer natural vector method, suggested with 91 percent certainty that SARS-CoV-2 had begun circulating among humans in Europe, India or the U.S. before Wuhan.

COVID-19 could have first begun circulating outside China, mathematical study suggests

COVID-19 viruses found in Europe, the U.S. and India could be older than that first identified in the city of Wuhan, suggesting the pandemic probably originated outside China, a mathematical study has concluded.

Researchers from China analysed genomes of the virus from around the world to compare them with a bat-borne version, which is the most closely related yet found in nature to SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the current pandemic.

They reported that examples found in five countries – France, England, India, the U.S. and the Netherlands – were closer to the original animal pathogen than the first cases identified in humans in Wuhan. That suggests the viruses from those places had experienced a shorter evolutionary journey and therefore probably emerged earlier, the two mathematicians concluded.

The origin of the pandemic is a highly charged issue, controversially politicized by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to COVID-19 as "the China virus." It was first identified in Wuhan during the last days of 2019, although subsequent studies have suggested it may have been present elsewhere sometime before that.

The new research was undertaken by Shaojun Pei and Stephen Yau, from Tsinghua University in Beijing and published in Acta Mathematica Scientia. It comes on the heels of a high-profile World Health Organization (WHO) investigation that aimed to close in on how the pandemic began.

After a trip to Wuhan, the WHO's team of experts, working alongside Chinese scientists, said they were unable to state definitively what had led COVID-19 to pass into humans, nor where it had happened, but that it had most likely traveled through two animal species first.

However, Pei and Yau concluded that their calculations, using the k-mer natural vector method, suggested with 91 percent certainty that SARS-CoV-2 had begun circulating among humans in Europe, India or the U.S. before Wuhan.

I notice that the Alresford Show is cancelled this year and Romsey Show will be continuing on a reduced scale. There is nothing on line regarding "Trout n' About" in Stockbridge yet. Judging by the e-mails I am getting, the smaller scale outside venues seem to be preparing to open this summer. There seem to be quite a few outdoor Shakespeare productions associated with local Fullers pubs and The Globe is back with audiences too.

I have my fingers crossed for the cricket. At the moment I am not sure whether teams like St Cross are welcoming fans. The Hampshire challenge cup for local, nonleague football clubs is still happening behind closed doors. It will be interesting to see how the England matches pan out as the game at the Ageas is not far off.

Not a coincidence that a paper written by the Chinese stating that it came from outside China?

I’m no scientist so I can’t say for sure. But if it had started in any other country, would you not think that area would have had the first hospital / medical centre struggling before Wuhan was hit?

There is a real issue with the Indian variant and this thread. Normally we all end up with cheese jokes etc.

But this is serious. If you don’t want the Indian variant, get the pun jab.

    I’ll get my coat.
