7:55 Wetherby - Scale Force 11/1. Was disappointing last time on its first try on Polytrack so can be excused that given it was fairly consistent before that. Has the assistance of Hollie Doyle today which is never a bad thing and I think it's overpriced at double figure odds. Win only.

    1.30 Sedgefield - Frankie Ballou

CD winner on a career-low mark today whos overall form at Sedgefield reads:

    P1121PF4327264

Last run at Sedgefield wasn't without promise in my opinion: "rallied and kept on approaching last, never dangerous" (racingpost comment)

The each way stats for the Forster yard at this track in handicap chases over the last 5 seasons not bad I think:

    runs 42 wins 6 placed 10 PL 6.60

Sean Quinlan always an eyecatching jockey booking at Sedgefield.

Hopefully this bottom weight can reach a place at least.

Good luck whatever you back today!

    Beverly 2.45 Mr Wagyu

I picked this one for the saturday league competition 2 weeks ago and will take another chance on him. Just 1lb above last winning mark and won of higher marks in the past. Won last year on 2nd run after a break so could have needed his comeback run at Thirsk when racing prominently until weakening final furlongs. Stable in good form and draw 4 is a positive for this front runner. Worth a small each way bet.

Over in France the Prix De Guiche looks like a match between Adhamo and Makaloun. The Group 3 prize is said to be a stepping stone to the French Derby for Jean-Claude Rouget's Makaloun if the colt comes through it satisfactorily. A son of Bated Breath, Makaloun won his first three races without looking anything out of the ordinary but when upped to Group 3 class at Chantilly he came right away to score by five lengths, with another four lengths back to the third and the runner up later won a listed race. Sent off favourite next time over 10F on Heavy ground Makaloun could only manage 3rd place behind Mark Johnston's Gear Up in a Saint Cloud Group 1 but it was very testing going that day and a certain colt also struggled on the ground that day and it was Bolshoi Ballet, who is now warm favourite for the Derby.

Freddie Head's Adhamo is a shade of odds-on today after winning the Prix La Force, a well known trial for the French Derby. That win brought up four in a row for the Intello colt but the runner up was beaten favourite in a Listed race next time and I get the feeling it was a bit below par renewal. Freddie Head also concerns me as a trainer who seems to get horses that look promising for a run or two but then don't go on and he has never trained the winner of a race his sister used to farm regularly.

In the circumstances I went with Makaloun at the odds today and I have also backed him for the French Derby at 12/1 because I think Adhamo is poor value at half those odds and St Mark's Basilica looks unappetising at the same 6/1 price.

    2.50 Chantilly Makaloun 7/4

Prix Du Jockey Club Makaloun 12/1

In the 4.07 at Sedgefield runs Zuckerberg, a former german owned horse which has won over fences for David Cottin in france. I've been following this horse for a while now. 2 runs ago over hurdles at Huntingdon it was an encouraging run when staying on in 4th. Mark
has dropped plenty so I wouldn't rule Zuckerberg out today. 3 from stables last 5 runners reached a place so hopefully Jeannie Candlish returns to the winners enclosure with this one today.

Ciao Shark is a warm favourite for the 1.45 Beverley and having been 3rd on debut is likely to improve and will hold a good chance today. At odds of 6/5 though, we won't get rich and I thought it worth chancing a newcomer.

Sir Lelo is by Dark Angel and cost £100,000 as a yearling and he is a full brother to Yafta, who was very decent. You would think a Beverley Maiden is not too ambitious as a starting point and I thought he was worth an interest at 5/1 coming out of trap 1. You never know how far forward these newcomers will be and it's a guess as to their ability but I thought the favourite's RPR of 72 was not unbeatable and Tom Dascombe is going OK at the moment.

    1.45 Beverley Sir Lelo 5/1

Makaloun has been backed for today and also cut to 17/2 for the French Derby. Hope that is a good sign.

Sir Lelo flew out of stall 1 but he didn't stay there for long. He never really looked like getting into it but will probably have benefited from the experience. He will need to do a lot better to get his purchase price back.

The favourite was a big disappointment at pretty short odds, never looking like winning.

Aleez Dancer absolutely hosed up, coming right away in smooth style to win by more than 6 lengths despite being drawn in box 14. That must have been a good race the son of Fast Company was in last time because the winner, 4th, 5th and 6th have all won since. Not bad for a Beverley Class 5 Novice race.

Oh well, it was only a speculative selection but Sir Lelo did beat the 11/10 favourite home, only to finish in 6th place :emoticon-0110-tongu

Makaloun looked like winning well but I thought he got a bit tired in front after coming through to take it up. He stayed on well enough to win by half a length at 15/8. I think he was entitled to have needed that after a while off the track and this was always his prep race for the French Derby, so there should be more to come.

Bookmakers reacted by cutting Makaloun to 7/1 for the French Derby and with his win today I pretty much have a free bet on him for that race at 12/1. He will need to come on from today but Jean-Claude Rouget usually knows what he is doing.

Adhamo was only 4th today about 3 lengths in arrears and I would say he has a slim chance of reversing form with Makaloun, given that the Head colt had fitness advantage today. I was astonished he was only pushed out to 8/1 from 6/1 and it seems crazy that today's winner in only one point shorter for the French Derby.

St Mark's Basilica is now 5/1 Fav for the French Derby and if he wins the French Guineas then he will surely go shorter but I think he has enough to prove for now and I would make Makaloun the 5/1 shot having satisfactorily landed the trial for a trainer who needs to be respected.

Almanzor won the Guiche in 2016 before following up in the French Derby and I hope Makaloun can also pull off that feat. Happy enough with his win today.

I will have a small each way on the Micky Hammond trained Walkonby in the 6.20 at Wetherby. A winner in 2019(3 times) and June 2020 for Mick Channon I wouldn't be surprised if her new yard finds the key to get her competitive again soon. Her mark has now slipped to 1lb below her last winning mark. With the 4 places on offer its worth taking a chance that she will outrun her odds tonight.
