If I remember rightly LJ said at the time that the data was not yet available at the last window so had to do signings on the old fashioned way of players that he and KS knew. The next window will be the first to be informed by the data analysts.

Im giving an example thats all, I did rate Allardyce but look what happened when he went, the same players went to **** under Moyes.
I would sign TAA everytime instead of Bissaka, thats the beauty of football, we all see it from different perspectives.

Januarys recruitment was poor but l will give the new recruitment process a few years before I judge it overall, reminds me of the Udinese model we were told was going to be the way to go a few years back so like you I am pessimistic. Main thing for me is we have a good solid set up and the financial clout to support it, the summer will be a big line in the sand with regards to future recruitment I would hope.

When I heard this podcast, I got the feeling that maybe they are overthinking the whole thing.

I am not trying to be a smart arse here mate but Allardyce was one of the first to bring data analysis to english football I think. He played in America for a team who shared a ground with an NFL side. Apparently he was blown away by their use of sports science and statistcs and data. Once he went to Bolton he went big on both things. Alex Ferguson was supposedly amazed by it all and then when McLaren went to work with him he brought in data stuff in the late 90s. I would not be surprised if those signings he made for us in some way werent based on some data he had seen in previous management jobs and he had been eyeing them for a while (a guess)

Back in January I dont think they used this model to a great extent. They will have done so up to a point but as he says they had only been in a few weeks so had to work fast. Certainly none of the team were in place to use it.

Vokins, Stewart, Jones and Winchester were signed. I would say Vokins would have been to replace MacFadzean but injuries havent helped him. Stewart the jury is out on as he hasnt been able to get much game time but perhaps that backs up your argument. Jones has been hit and miss although his talent is there. Winchester I quite like actually but I know plenty disagree so fair enough. We can let Jones and Vokins go back and we will learn more about Stewart next year, but you could be proven right. Whether that proves the approach is wrong I would disagree with. As it seems to work for so many other clubs no reason to think it wont for us, we are no different, and that doesnt mean everyone we sign will be brilliant either...

There's factors like players not hitting the same form when moving clubs, Grigg for instance when he came to us.
Wyke wouldn't of been on the radar until Johnson came.
Which leads to, if these players fit certain styles/formation, does Johnson stop tinkering so much.?

One thing I'm happy about is after the promise of attacking football under Ross and mostly the opposite. Then the dire shìte under Parky.
Johnson has improved the quality and players imo.
I'm hoping he really sets us up to go for it now and gets the players fired up, win or bust.

Agree mate. That is what I want to see, attacking football. He had a reputation for that at Bristol City where he would always go for it. I hope as well next year he sticks to a formation at least. I dont mind some rotation of players as form requires but I think one formation will help. If we get fans in and the team play attacking then I will be happy.

When Allerdyce got the NUFC job, his sports team was massive, he insisted on 1 to 1 physios for each 1st team squad member, their role was to get to know 'their player' inside out physically, and to look after their fitness individually. He head-hunted my nephew who was at Leeds Rhinos at the time, and had been trained at Loughborough, and mentored by Gary Lewin ( Arsenal and England physio) in the use of these fitness monitors that all players have strapped to them these days, and he helped set up the system at SJP. It's fantastic listening to the stuff that is monitored and logged , and what they can tell from the data. There's not much that players can get away with these days, the science tells all. My nephew is now head of sports science at NUFC.

He's just announced he's leaving NUFC after tomorrow, heading for Al Ain in the UAE as their Director of Sports Science. Its the club that Asamoah Gyan went to from SAFC. Good move for the lad, the Newcastle players bought him a Rolex as a leaving present.

Change of plan for Jamie, Rafa has decided he wants him at Everton as his head of sports science, so he's going to Merseyside. Starts next week on preseason in USA.

He's a top lad mate, absolutely loves football, I keep trying to steer him towards Wearside, but it's not happening. He gets me great signed shirts etc for our charity football do's, which has helped us raise £50k for local cancer hospice over 10 years.
