The Blues are understood to be heading the race for out-of-contract Luton Town skipper Sonny Bradley. Rumours regarding Blues interest in the 29-year-old began circulating on social media yesterday and now the EADT is reporting that Town are currently the frontrunners to sign Bradley, who has been a key man for the Championship Hatters over the last three seasons. This i would be happy with!!
I agree, I'm quite perplexed by some of the reports around this. Whilst I wouldn't be too concerned about certain players going I can't believe he's basically told the whole squad including the likes of Downes and Woolfenden. The only crumb of comfort is it appears he's done this at alot of the clubs he's been at followed by success.
A couple of years ago, Woolfy looked like being a top top player but he did not have a good season in 20/21 so although I would love to see him fulfil that early potential with us I won’t lose any sleep if he moves on at this point. I think as much as anything it’s about culture and if the culture is rotten then by having a ruthless clear out he’s effectively having a deep clean.
Quite the downfall from a year or two ago, when I recall you dubbed Wolfenden as the best Ipswich centre-back of the last two decades.
It’s a real shame for him that he didn’t come through in another era. But who knows... maybe he’ll be kept on. Hope this is the last time we have to be saying things like that! I wouldn’t have put him ahead of Burley era CBs but certainly I thought he was the most promising player to come through in that position since.
I agree that Woolfenden hasn't had a good season. I don't think he'll make the grade to play Championship level football. I think Cook has said to the whole squad that they can find other clubs to see who he gets a reaction out of. Show him some desire to play for Ipswich and you may be retained but fail to show the required enthusiasm for this project and you'll be out the door.
I think over the last ten years we have ruined/hindered a few young players by rushing them into first team football and expecting too much.
I always thought Woolfenden was the best CB I'd seen come through the academy, I thought he looked better than Webster (I know not academy) and he's consistently playing in the PL. It's a risky strategy by PC but it appears its one he's successfully used before so that's the hope I'm clinging to. It seems like he just likes bringing in his own players rather than working with those already at a club which is fair enough but don't know what that says about the prospects of our academy.
I'm not keen in throwing the baby out with the bath water. We are going to need a playing squad of about 25 including reserves so it doesn't seem reasonable to get rid of everyone. If we are going to play PC's preferred system of 4-2-3-1, I would keep KVY, Downes (are we really going to be able to attract better at DCM?), Wolfenden as 1 of the centre backs, Dobra who I think could be a good impact sub, Edwards - played attacking wide left or not at all & Norwood. What we need most (i think) is the attacking midfield roles - to score goals & create chances. We need at least 1 midfielder who will score 10 goals a season if not 2 but when was the last time that happened? I also think we need a new number 1 goalkeeper, Cornell & Holy are much of a muchness for me
Wolfy has been very average at best this season, has he done enough to be kept on....not in my opinion!! No room for sentiment imo, if you haven't performed and show no signs of improvement, then time to go, which is exactly what PC has decided. I for one certainly won't lose any sleep if he is sold but tbh i feel that way about pretty much the whole squad. Time for the new broom to sweep through itfc, if it takes 2 seasons to get promoted, so be it but keeping things as they are will result in relegation!
