    Barnsley v Swansea City

Competition - Sky Bet Championship, Play Off Semi-Final, 2nd leg
    Venue - Liberty Stadium
    Date - 22 May 2021
    Kick Off - 6:30pm

Following their 1-0 win away in the first leg at Barnsley, Steve Cooper’s squad find themselves possibly just 90 minutes away from a trip to Wembley to play for a place in the Premier League.

On Monday evening, a piece of magic by Andre Ayew gave the Swans the lead before the break when he cut inside from the right and curled an unstoppable left-footed effort past home goalkeeper Bradley Collins.

Roared on by a raucous home crowd of 4,000 fans, the Tykes made a great start to the second half but could not find the breakthrough they needed as Swans goalkeeper Freddie Woodman made a smart low save from substitute Carlton Morris and denied Callum Brittain on the rebound.

Morris nearly grabbed an injury-time equaliser but saw his flick from Cauley Woodrow's corner come back off the crossbar.

Turning to Saturday evening, when a crowd of 3,000 Jacks will be present, the question for Swans fans will be ‘How will Cooper decide to play?’

Recognising that Barnsley literally have to score, should he opt for a defensive line up, and hope to catch the Tykes on the break?

That said, attack is the best form of defence, so should he go for the jugular and finish them off early?

in some respects, the possible selection of Korey Smith in place of Connor Hourihane may at first look defensive but Hourihane was extremely disappointing in the first leg to say the least.

Another question for Cooper is whether or not to include Connor Roberts? Could he be picked upfront on the right? That said, Ayew has looked more dangerous out wide on the right than playing down the middle or on the left.

I’m expecting a few twists and turns on Saturday evening - as is always the case with the Swans: we never do it ‘easy’, think of the Play-Off Final 10 years ago when a seemingly ‘home and dry’ 3-0 lead was transformed into 3-2 and Reading then hit the post - so I’m going to go for a 2-2 draw on the night (with Barnsley twice taking the lead), meaning that the Swans will win 3-2 on aggregate: I would be absolutely delighted to write another Match Day Thread for the 29th May! <cheers>

I'm currently in a hotel across the road from Elland Road , a day earlier I'd have popped in to Barnsley which is just down the road to cheer the lads on

Thanks Taff, it will be a nervous 90 minutes (hopefully not 120). I can see them scoring but they will have to push forward and if we keep a cool head we will exploit the gaps at the back. So its 2-1 for me 3-1 on aggregate.

“Now, it’s half-time,” asserted Valerian Ismaël.

“We felt the first 20-25 minutes the emotion in the players because we didn’t play well in transition and we conceded an offside goal – it’s really frustrating – and we have to get a penalty in the second half.

“I think the second half was much better; it was our game and our identity and that’s why we are in the play-offs. We have to score with Cauley, Britts and Carlton. It gives us a good feeling that we are near now and it will be a fight on Saturday.

“We travel to Swansea to give everything to make it happen because it’s the play-offs and this is our mentality.”

Thanks Taff......I am going with the positive Cooper trait and say that we will have an attack is the best form of defence thread and a win by two goals on the night especially with the crowd behind us

The Swans' away kit received mixed reviews when it was released ahead of the 2020/21 season.

And those who had concerns over the garish strip must have been fearing the worst when Swansea slumped to a 2-0 Carabao Cup loss at Newport County in their season opener when wearing the kit for the first time.

However, their form in the lively turquoise and raspberry number since that grim afternoon at Rodney Parade makes for phenomenal reading.

When you include Monday night's triumph over Barnsley, Swansea have played 12 Championship fixtures in their away strip this season.

They have won nine of those matches while they drew the other three, meaning they have never lost a league game when donning their flamboyant second kit.

I guess we were still getting used to it when we lost to Newport in the Carabao Cup at the start of the season <laugh>

I detest the away kit colours, bring back the Monster Munch!

Anyway... we simply cannot sit on the lead, so will it be a positive, attacking tactic or play on the break? I think I agree with Taff and we'll probably play on the break. Perhaps Coops will revert to a back 3 (5) to spring the counter. I'd still like to see Cullen up top and Roberts as a wing back. If Jamal can put in another great shift then he'll be another defender in midfield anyway! I really think we can sucker punch them if we set up right and commit to breaking at pace. And just leave Cullen on the half way line when they're in our half.

    2 - 1 (3 -1).
