Given Burke's been at the club 3 years and is a London boy, it's not surprising to me that it's not immediately a done deal that he signs a new contract but personally really hope he does. I would say that of all our defenders (and i include Alfie Jones in this), he is currently the one who has most proved he can handle the Championship. For a season and a half he was very good. Of course he suffered in the second half of the relegation season like everyone else, but he was also out injured a lot during that period I think. And I think he has been as consistent as anyone in the back four this season.
Wilks (who?) proved himself, as a 20 y o. In the Chapionsip with Barnsley enough for us as a (supposedly) ambitious Championship side to sign him. Its not really that different ..... the proof being that PL sides have scouted him and are apparently interested. He has potential to play at that level. If he got the chance of such a move hed be daft not to jump at it, as much as we don't want him to leave us.
As good as Jones has been for us, it was pretty apparent from the moment he signed for us we were just a stepping stone for him. A one year deal meaning if we didn't go up he could leave and join a Championship club, and now presumably he's not agreed a new long term deal because he wants to see if we stay up and are competitive. Considering the noise in 19/20 about only wanting players committed to the club (and I suppose again last season regarding KLP), it's an interesting situation.
Mccann stated in the run in that the were to be no contract talks until the end of the season - across the board. My reading of the Jones deal is that it worked both ways, with us having an option on the extra year - probably only triggered by promotion, granted. It's fair enough for either party to be cautious. We probably didn't want to commit to a championship-value contract in league 1 to secure his services. He probably didn't want to commit to multiple seasons in league 1 if we were no-where near. Wouldn't you protect your arse if you were about to sign for a club which was in the level of disarray we were after last season?
This seems very reasonable. Been clear that he was only going to sign an extension if we went up (no issue. It's been quite a bullish start to the summer from us. Even with Max Clark, the safe option would be to keep him as it allows Fleming to go on loan and get games and he's versatile and a good local lad. I think it's right to let Max go mind but it is bold. Maybe, the lad has turned out to be immense and I know he was very impressive at Gillingham but it's not disrespectful to say we were a step up for him. Plus the defence and midfield were pretty set when he joined. We'd signed Richie, who was always going to be the starter and still had Reece & Jordy. I wasn't sure if he only signed a 1-year deal because he wasn't sure he'd get enough games and much like Regan, I think he was primarily brought in to provide competition.
No surprise there. Might be a positive for all parties. Can't imagine he'd like to be a number 2 on city's bench after his last championship season. Seemed a bit on the fringes of the celebrations in the footage I saw. I think the lad could leave with no hard feelings and we can strengthen at the same time.
Possibly, but Docherty had no qualms signing on and is clearly fully committed. We're now Championship and we've only triggered the one year extension because we've been unable to secure a longer deal with Jones, so what's the hold up this time? Hopefully as Howden says, a longer term deal is being worked on, in which case this concern goes away. Would hope we can secure him on a 3 year deal.
Trying to second guess what is apparently going through Ehabs mind regarding transfers and contracts........Best of luck with that!
Well, that's a view, except I believe it was more a case of their being an unresolvable issue between him and the club, and also there is the fact that we were at that time a step up for him. Irrespective, unless you are perhaps a KLP, meaning someone who really loves the club, you jump at the chance if an established PL team comes calling for you. Crazy not to. Even a KLP would likely conclude the same, but might at least give it more than a second's thought before answering. "Oooh hang on, nah, I'm not that bothered about the money and the financial security at the moment ta, and at 22 I really need to further my football education with this lower league team before I consider whether I want to move up into the PL and give it a go". Really?
I'm sure he does. But of little relevance to this discussion. Tymon was a 17 y.o. (or just turned 18?) with only 5 senior appearances under his belt, including sub appearances. He and Stoke took a gamble. A stupid gamble from their side, giving him a 5 (FIVE) year contract! On the face of it , it didn't work out. But who's to say it would have worked out any better had he stayed with us? Nobody knows. That doesn't mean to say I don't think he should have stayed with us; I think he probably should, even more so given he's a local lad who came up through the academy. But on the other hand a 5 year contract from Stoke (as Stoke were at the time) must have been incredibly tempting. You can pick examples from both side of the coin. Personally I think Wilks (who?) would be crazy to turn down a Newcastle or Palace IF they do come calling - and as much as I want him to stay, I don't for one minute think he would. 3 years of crazy money with every chance of a golden goose continuing for a few years after that.
And don't forget that leeds gave him the bums rush too. He's made his name at Hull City and good luck to him.
If a Newcastle or Palace did come in for him I'm sure he'd be straight out on loan so he could end up anywhere and not guaranteed games. The money compared to a City Championship wage? Don't know, might be worth the risk might not. Personally I don't think he's good enough for PL football yet, he still has to cut his teeth with regular football in the Championship, and he'll get that chance with City. If it works well he'll be worth a lot more to a PL club next season than he is now. However, money talks...
-> There was a lad at Leeds..... looked a talent..... Never sighted since moving to Spurs.... Is that the lad otherwise known as Sam Byram? If so, it was actually West Ham (his family originally came from that way on). Now back in the PL with Norwich (living the dream). He's been, and is doing very well for himself, both football and earnings wise.
Courtesy of the Championship. He doesn’t appear to have kicked a ball for Norwich in the 20/21 season due to a couple of hamstring injuries. His influence on Norwich getting promoted to the PL is literally zero. He’s made 17 appearances since the start of the 2019/20 season.
