Not looking good !!!! Reece Burke and George Long contracts 'unsustainable' says boss, as Hull City face losing duo Goalkeeper George Long has found himself relegated to number two with the Tigers this season owing to the form of Matt Ingram. Grant McCann admits talk of George Long’s impending departure from Hull City for Championship rivals Millwall has surprised him. Long is out of contract at the KCOM Stadium next month, though the club do have an option to extend it by a further 12 months. Like defender Reece Burke, the pair are currently in negotiations over fresh terms with the League One champions, but Gary Rowett’s Lions are understood to be in discussions with the ex-Sheffield United stopper over a move to The Den on a free transfer. While City have automatically triggered options on the contracts of Alfie Jones and 19-goal striker Josh Magennis, McCann says the finances involved in Long and Burke’s deals mean extending them under the current terms is not practical....
I'd like him to stay, but Greaves and Jones are better players and if you put them alongside a vocal, championship-experienced centre half with few years left left to offer we'd probably be in a better position than breaking the bank to keep Burke. Comfortable with the idea of long going for a steady championship experienced keeper too.
If it’s unsustainable to renew for 12 months on their current terms then why were they given those terms in the first place? Was it because we were still getting parachute payments at the time? Seems a bit of a strange reason to me. Or is it just a polite way of saying that after a few years at the club it’s been decided they’re not worth what we’re paying them?
There have been a few decent players the club have overpaid for since tumbling out of the premier league. Before this last year the clubs head of recruitment hasnt really got value for the contracts previously given out.
Let's not kid ourselves. Burke is a very decent CB. It's a bit concerning that we can no longer afford (or choose not to pay) what we previously managed to pay him when he joined us as a 21 y.o. on Championship wages. It also risks sending messages out to others (like Wilks) that hanging around here isn't going to bring good wages. But that's the reality of where we are now. Step up McGoughlin and Festus?
It's to be hoped Greaves learns to head the ball in the next couple of months because so far he's shown there is little correlation between ball hitting head and direction the ball goes in - having said that Burke was also a master of the misdirected header
I don’t think we’ll be alone in having to cut our cloth accordingly. The pandemic will have given Championship Clubs a dose of reality. Especially as established Championship clubs rejected the opportunity for salary capping.
True. So where's he gonna go? It won't be a PL club and it won't be a relegated ex PL club either. Suggests we're gonna struggle competing with similar clubs? But it is what it is (without new owners)..
I've mentioned this before... Tommie Elphick is now a free agent... But then we can all probably throw a name into the ring.
I think he'll retire from playing, he's got his coaching badges and hasn't payed a single game since needing knee surgery in 2019.
Looked decent when we had him on loan. Experienced CB and all that. Allowed to leave Hudds though....why?
genuine interest or just trying to put the pice up ? Preston interested in Regan Slater as he waits on Sheffield United future, Hull City also keen The 21-year-old Sheffield-born midfielder has a number of clubs monitoring his situation after spending the season on loan at the KCOM Stadium
