We aren't paying below the odds, we have just chosen not to make Burke our highest paid player ( currently ) it's not 10k a week it's 10k a week on top of what he's currently on and that good chunk of money could be spent better else where.
Obviously early days in the transfer market, but just for the moment, Ehab again looking like the master of bursting balloons of optimism. Back in the Championship with a team that virtually picked itself last season, and without a couple of weeks we've lost one of only 2 defenders at the club with real experience at this level (the other being Elder). I do realise things might get better but for the moment, it's a disappointing start. I'm hoping the explanation is that for personal reasons he wanted to move closer to London and this was the best offer he could get, but hardly smacks of ambition from club or player as lost him to a club who, with respect, are hardly one of the big hitters in the Championship.
I don't want to get into a debate because I don't know the facts but HDM reported that agreeing to the extra year would have taken his pay above £10k/week, making him one of the highest earners. Now, whether that makes it £11k or £15k I don't know, nor do I know where it puts him in the pecking order but I do know we've lost a very promising CB who could have done a job in the championship.
I don't believe that for a second. Triggering another year on his deal would have given him whatever he was on before we were relegated and there's no way we signed a youth player on £20k a week. Luton won't even be paying him £10k a week, never mind an extra £10k on top.
I think another consideration is, that we have more or less 'let go' 2 centre backs... Now whatever your views on JDW and RB, they have gone to opposition teams... both will be lauded by their new clubs... one already is...
Has he definitely gone? I've not seen that? It would have made him out highest earner, do you believe that's value for money in the current financial situation? ( Did we really miss him when he was out? ) Winning the league suggests we didn't Who's to say his replacement ( if he goes ) won't be just as good/better and on less money?
I think he's looking to moving down there for reasons that aren't financial, so they most probably aren't paying him that. Doesn't change the fact it's a little pointless paying someone who doesn't really want to be here a decent chunk of money that could be better spent elsewhere. Nobody was going to spend money on him, so it was never going to make sense to trigger the deal on the current terms for either party
I think circumstances have resulted in the current situation with him. He signed when we were a championship club, and obviously, his year extension was based on us having remained in the 2nd tier. Having unexpectedly been relegated and on top of that the Covid situation being factored in has made this outcome. Having said all that, the fact that we can't offer a new deal better than Luton really is a bit of a worry. But Ehab is notoriously bad at getting players to sign new contracts when theirs run out.
If this is true it’s strange he chose Luton, maybe not the rams but Cardiff and Bristol city would be a better bet for the prem!!!
No he's not out of the door yet as far as I know. Value for money in football isn't a very accurate measure these days, but did we miss him? I think we did and it revealed a lack of depth in the squad. We'll have to wait and see who replaces him, could be better could be worse.
Or he's choosing to move back down south for family/personal reasons. If it's all about money do you honestly believe Luton have offered more then Bristol city?
Its one risk asking lower league players to step up to League 1 .. another to ask them to do it on the Championship... If there is a surplus of Premiership standard players around going to Championship clubs , asking lower leaguers to step up might be a step too far.
George Moncur has now left Luton, so if we really were after him, we should get our £3k a week offer in nice and early.
