I think he did it at Doncaster with some success, so if I was to guess I reckon he thought he could just repeat the trick again.

It's great to see he's evolving as a manager, 19/20 will have been a tough but important lesson for him.

As long as he’s learned it
Reminded me of barmby, rabbit in the headlights and just froze.

Guess we'll find out this season. Standard this season doesn't look anything like as good as it did when we were last in it, I think mid table is more than achievable with the right recruitment.

I liked Barmby as a manager, getting us to 8th and being in with a shot of the playoffs right up to the end wasn't a bad effort, just a shame it ended how it did.

My.memory maybe playing tricks on me but I thought we were about the same position if not higher when Barmby took over .. all he did was tread water with us .. in fact if my memory serves me right we actually dropped down a place or 2 .. I also recall the argument about Billy Sharp being available and it being suggested that Barmby didn't want him as it was suggested it would upset the apple cart .. in the end made no difference. Although who knows what could have been. That said I'm getting old so may have totally dreamt all that up !

We got as high as 4th under Barmby and ended the season 8th, 7 points off the playoffs. We lost five on the bounce in March which pretty much killed off our hopes of the playoffs, though on the last day we could technically have made them had results gone our way. But for his first managerial position, it wasn't bad going at all.

He had a good squad he don’t have to do much but he couldn’t even do that

It wasn't a bad squad, no. He did what he needed to, I never felt like the Allams wanted him as a long term option and he made their decision much easier.

And as I said when he took over we were in a similar position to where we finished .. fraid I agree with Chazz on this one .. great player and one of our own but didn't do a great deal and tbh in my humble opinion missed a trick when Sharp was on the radar. Will always think highly of the bloke for what he did for us as a player but not as a manager sorry.

You've a short memory, Urika. Can't you recall the stick he got on here re his not having another plan? I assume you didn't agree,? Actually by your reckoning (if you cotton on to his plan then you will automatically win the game), 11 Managers did cotton on, but I thought you'd know this... they have to, beat other teams to win the league as well.
I also acknowledged, Terry eventually did learn to adapt. Credit to him for that, it was odd he actually took so long though.
You do seem very touchy if there is a hint of criticism towards Terry. It was a fantastic achievement winning the league after the previous debacle. The good thing is he's shown he is developing as a Manager. However he's not the Messiah (yet).

It's fairly obvious with the title of the thread that he was unpopular(and still is with some)...Yes,we lost games along the way, doesn't every team? McCann threw together a lot of new faces and naturally it took time to gel, when it eventually came we were unstoppable.

Is there no credit due to him for the team spirit and togetherness that he injected into the players on the pitch? I haven't seen a more dedicated bunch of players in our colours for some years yet that's seldom commented on!!

No,he isn't the messiah(yet) and he may never be but we'll find out next season.

Can't we give an honest 'assessment' without people jumping on our negativity?
We all have opinions, personally I feel you are actually underestimating Terry when you say you feel it took time to gel. We won 6 out of the first 7 games! The sticky periods we had were nothing to do with new players coming together.
I'll say it again, he did a fantastic job last season. In my opinion, he developed a tactical nous which wasn't evident early in the season and certainly the previous season. Because I pointed out that this was a weakness, I am been negative despite the context of me saying he has developed in this area!

And can't I give an honest 'assessment' without anyone jumping on my positivity? Can't the Club celebrate promotion without people pissing all over it and scrutinising every single mistake?

If we'd have lost 14 games and drew another one there may have been legitimate reason to pick it apart,as it stands, with me anyway,I've moved on from being in League 1 and look forward to seeing how we cope with the move up...

This stuff about ‘he’s only got plan A’ is garbage anyway. Yes we always play a roughly 4-3-3 line up with McCann, but within that shape we show loads of flexibility. Sometimes two of three midfielders lying deep, sometimes just one with the other tow more advanced. Sometimes two advanced wingers, other times the wide two tuck in alongside the midfield (Wilks in particular got better at this in the Spring). Full backs that attack and stay home. We played flexibly throughout the season, more and more as the season wore on and confidence flowed through the playing staff.

Truth is - there are two teams in every game, they are all fit lads and the opposition are entitled to try as hard as we do. Winning and losing in pro football is about 1% margins, most teams are 99% as capable.

We will probably lose as much as we win next season - so anyone who spent the autumn and winter losing their **** over City’s performances are in for a rude awakening.

Not touchy at all and he didn't get any stick on here from me. Perhaps the usual suspects wanted his head on a stick, like the usual suspects now want to devalue what he did. I don't pretend to be a football manager either with my views on what plan he should or shouldn't use because I think all those who thought they knew more then the manager were talking out of their backsides. A game can be won or lost on the bounce of the ball, a deflection, a bad decision or just simply because one team is better then the other. There are no plan A,B,C or even D's. There are good managers and good coaches, equally there are bad ones, and even the good ones can have an off day.

Not that many who have 20 off days one after the other. Terry did really well last year and we hope that he is better equipped in terms of experience for this coming campaign. However well he did last year he is back to where he was and I think he has a better group of players this time round. I don’t care if he only has a plan A but he must do better than last time. I think that’s what people mean and I don't think they are being negative.

Think we accumulated too many lightweights in recent seasons.

Irvine. Toral, Evandro, Stewart etc.....all on a sick note, out of form, injury prone. None would get stuck in like it mattered to them.
