The striker is a wanted man in the Football League right now, according to a report by Football League World.

I mean wouldn't show much faith in Bachmann either....and we probably could spend that elsewhere on more pressing areas in the team.

 

I'd say that's a piece of nonsense - we're supposed to be only signing players who are better than what we already have. He clearly doesn't fit that criterion.

Ashley Young should nenver have gone public about his 'wish' to return to Watford

 

Apparently we are offering more but he might want to stay I guess now Inter have a new manager

 

So why has he been talking about coming back here for months... unless it was part of a bargaining chip??

All the media talk does not engender much trust..

 

Maybe he was just suggesting he might as an option but nothing was set in stone .

I got the impression he wasn’t expecting a new deal to be offered but yet it’s something we need to see resolved soon

 

I am not certain that the rumours being reported in Italy are very reliable. I remember reading in another earlier source that he was already supposed to have turned down a new deal with Inter. He and his wife are on holiday with Tom Cleverley, Jonny Evans and Wayne Rooney (plus their spouses) at the moment. The contract on offer is less than his previous contract because Inter are trying to reduce costs and Watford are believed to be offering more money than Inter.

It would suggest that his comments about wanting to return to Watford were not sincere if he decides to stay at Inter (who will be playing in the Champions League), but I think that he wants to be closer to his family who live locally. I doubt that he will get another opportunity to return to Watford.

Certainly looks like we're concentrating on a striker or two, and a left winger! He suggests all 3 of Gray, Perica and Success may leave one way or another, so imagine we will want at least one in after the Fletcher signing!

Danjuma would be a good signing but think there will be bigger teams in for him, and might be too much! No mention of Chair at all though....


Ashley Fletcher has signed a five-year contract after becoming a free agent at the end of last season with Middlesbrough. Expect the official announcement some time next week and for the 25-year-old to be part of a freshening-up of the forward line.

He is unlikely to be a first-choice striker but will hope a fresh start and a return to the top division (where he played a season with West Ham in 2016-17) will help him to reach the potential shown in his early days at Manchester United.

Ashley Young: It’s looking less likely that Young’s dream return to Vicarage Road will happen. Inter Milan, under new head coach Simone Inzaghi (after the post-title departure of Antonio Conte), have offered him a new contract. Young’s priority appears to be to head back to the UK, but his former England team-mates David Beckham (owner) and Phil Neville (manager) at Inter Miami have sounded out a move to join them in MLS.

Although a Vicarage Road ‘homecoming’ 14 years on — an offer of a one-year contract with an option of a further year has been discussed — had looked desirable as far back as this year’s January window, it appears the interest has softened due to his positional unsuitability for Watford’s currently preferred system of 4-3-3. Although still physically fit and mobile despite turning 36 in a month’s time, he is more suited to play as the left wing-back in a 3-5-2 rather than as an orthodox left-back.

Arnaut Danjuma: There is interest in the Dutchman but Watford are not the only club in the picture. The Bournemouth winger is likely to cost in the region of £20 million although Emiliano Buendia’s £33 million sale to Aston Villa from Norwich this week may strengthen the resolve of the power-brokers at the Vitality Stadium. The key difference between the two cases is Bournemouth remain a Championship club and need to sell to help balance the books after missing out on promotion.

Danjuma, then at Club Bruges, was being considered by Rennes as a replacement for Ismaila Sarr when he came to Watford in 2019 and, while the prospect of them lining up on the left and right flank at Vicarage Road is a tantalising one, other clubs with bigger budgets and ability to offer greater stability than Watford may be preferred.

Lille and Wolfsburg are also known to be keen, while countless Premier League teams are keeping an eye on developments. If Watford do get him, it would represent a huge coup.

Sam Johnstone: Relegated West Bromwich Albion are in a similar boat with Johnstone to Bournemouth with Danjuma. They know he is likely to leave this summer, especially now that he is with the England Euros squad and has an even greater opportunity to impress. It’s understood he would cost in the region of £15 million to £20 million. Watford would not be in the market for a goalkeeper at that price.

Most obviously, it is not an area where Watford need to strengthen. Daniel Bachmann is likely to be their No 1 come the start of next season after playing at the Euros with Austria, Ben Foster has a year left on his contract and Rob Elliot has signed new a two-year deal as experienced cover. And that’s before you get to Pontus Dahlberg and youngster Adam Parkes.

Eddie Nketiah: As when Danny Welbeck joined in 2019, it would be a short physical journey for Nketiah from Arsenal’s neighbouring training ground to Watford’s, but it appears there may be too much distance in the finances to make this one work.

Nketiah, who has recently changed agent, only has a year left on his contract but it’s understood he’s currently in discussions over a new one. Stay at Arsenal and a loan opportunity may materialise for Watford, but if it’s going to go late into the window they may have moved on to other options by the time it comes up.

Rafael Santos Borre: The River Plate striker is another who has recently changed agent, so perhaps that’s why there has been a lot of noise about him. Sources in Argentina have said that there is nothing in the link between Watford and the Colombian. It is understood from sources closer to home that the 25-year-old is not high on the list, even though he would be a free agent signing.

Ike Ugbo: Although there has been interest and even discussions, it’s understood other targets have now moved above Ugbo in Watford’s search for a striker. The 22-year-old scored 16 goals in 32 games in the Belgian top division last season on loan at Cercle Bruges, but is known to have told team-mates at parent club Chelsea that a move to Vicarage Road is now unlikely.

Although a long shot, it’s understood Watford will be watching the movements of Ugbo’s Stamford Bridge colleague Tammy Abraham closely with the England international seemingly surplus to requirements under new coach Thomas Tuchel. As with Danjuma and Nketiah, though, there will be others circling for him.

Matej Vydra: He’s going to the European Championship with the Czech Republic and is likely to feature against England on June 22, but it appears moves to bring the now 29-year-old back for a third spell with Watford are unlikely to develop this summer. Attempts were made to strike a loan deal with Burnley in January but it seems, as with Ugbo, other targets are now more likely.

Harvey Elliott: His next steps are unlikely to be decided until much later in the window, and he’s set to start pre-season at Liverpool with so many of their players likely to still be resting after Euros, Copa America or Olympics duty. Watford are on the lookout for a left winger and Elliott is left-footed but he played the majority of last season on the opposite flank during a very impressive loan at Blackburn Rovers. This one may resurface down the line but it doesn’t appear to be advancing now.

Josh Doig: Hibernian’s 19-year-old left-back is highly regarded and a move has been sounded out. It’s understood a fee in the region of £4 million has been mooted and the hierarchy at Hibernian, while not wanting to sell Scotland’s 2020-21 young player of the year, are understood to have guided all interested clubs towards the level they will sell at. This means it may become a bidding war.

Lewis Ferguson: The early flurry of interest in the Aberdeen midfielder, which included the Scottish club calling a reported Watford bid in the region of £2 million “insulting”, has died down. Shortly after that, Ferguson posted on social media that he was in London, but it’s understood it was a planned trip and nothing to do with sealing a transfer. Sources close to the 21-year-old say there have been no developments regarding the potential move in the last week.

Rodrigo De Paul to AC Milan, Jens Petter Hauge to Udinese then Watford: If the De Paul deal happens, there is always a chance Milan’s Hauge could come to Watford. As mentioned previously, they are on the lookout for a left winger in addition to a No 10 and this former team-mate of Philip Zinckernagel at Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt could fit the bill. Atletico Madrid are also interested in De Paul, so that may break the chain in the first instance, but Udinese will only sell for the right price.

 

I also read the article by Adam Leventhal, which I found rather depressing. He spent most of the time telling us about players who are not certain to stay (including 'Cucho' Hernandez, Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah) and a list of players whom Watford are unlikely to be signing. Leventhal does mention that Watford are looking for two more midfield players, a striker and a left winger. There was no indication of anyone who may actually be signed (in particular, a quality striker), but then I realised that Leventhal is clearly not actually ITK and he does hint at that in the article. Hopefully, Gino Pozzo will pull some 'rabbits out of the hat' or Watford will struggle to avoid relegation next season.
