Switzerland is one of my favourite countries. I'm not sure what I like most about it, but the flag is a big plus...

Cricket match abandoned after travellers turn up at Hull field
Travellers arrived at The Hull and East Riding Sports Club unexpectedly
    Lisa Baxter
A sports club has been forced to cancel all training and fixtures this weekend after travellers arrived during a match last night and caused chaos.

The six caravans arrived on Chanterlands Avenue yesterday evening on playing fields owned by The Hull and East Riding Sports Club, where several sports clubs play.

The Hull Zingari Cricket Club was having their under-11s training when the travellers arrived, and said they disrupted their game, forcing it to be abandoned, after "letting their kids and dogs" run all over the pitch.

The junior team coach, who did not wish to be named, said: "There were adults shouting and swearing and being abusive.

"I was talking to a parent when one of the travellers drove his car at me.

"He drove at me then swerved and told me he’d run me over and kill me if I said anything to him. Then he told me he does what he wants, and started driving round the square like a lunatic."

He said one was driving a vehicle on their pitch which "costs thousands" to maintain and keep pristine, and was doing "wheel spins" on it.

"It's fairly superficial damage fortunately, because it's been so dry, but I am worried about what happens if it rains and they do it again. If we get a downpour and they do it, they will ruin it

"We spent £2,000 on padded covers for the pitch, and the kids were jumping all over them. We've closed the clubhouse now after someone did their 'business' in the corridor. It's vile."

He said three of their team's boys have been selected to play for the county, and this weekend was supposed to be their final practice before making their county debuts, but they've now cancelled all weekend training and matches.

""The kids all had to witness what happened last night and some of them were scared. We've had to call everything off for tonight and the rest of the weekend and close the pitch and let them do what they want to it, basically. It's heart-breaking."

He said they've been in touch with Humberside Police but he claims they were reluctant to do anything.

"They seem to be just observing rather than actually supporting us," he said.

There was speculation that the group were the same ones moved on from an East Riding Council play park, who moved on yesterday after council representatives intervened.

Councillor Paul Nickerson tweeted yesterday evening: "A good solution today. We talked to the traveller community who had set up camp on a kids play park, they understood the issue and how well used the park is and have since moved on. ERYC have secured the park and all's well that ends well. I wish the travellers well on their journey."

One Facebook post on a local Hull page said: "Moved on from Beverley. They'll be heading up to the horse fair so can't imagine they will be here long."

Other nearby residents were concerned about the arrival also, with one commenting on a local Facebook page: "They're parked up literally behind our house, absolutely fuming. We've got a camera on our back garden and over the field, but it's not ideal.

A member of the badminton club who are also based at the club said; "Now the local community can’t use the facilities due to safety issues. I play badminton there and now I can’t because of this.

"Lots of different clubs play there and now they have all had to stop. It's such a shame because they only re-opened two or three weeks ago."

A spokesperson for Humberside Policesaid: "We received reports that a number of caravans had encamped on land off Chanterlands Avenue in Hull, shortly before 6pm yesterday, Thursday 10 June.

"Our officers are working closely with the trustees."

Hull City Council said in a statement: "Hull City Council is aware that travellers have set up an unauthorised encampment in the Chanterlands Avenue area. We are working closely with our partners including Humberside Police to take appropriate action.”

Topless youths 'out for destruction' trash charity's peace garden
Peace garden restored to former glory trashed less than 24 hours later
    Sophie Kitching
This footage shows youths who "destroyed" a garden at a Hull charity - just a day after staff and elderly members had finished restoring it to its "former glory".

A "mass of devastation and carnage" has been left at Endike Community Care Association, a not-for-profit charity, in Ashton Close, Hull, and was first spotted by the devastated team at the charity on Thursday morning.

Humberside Police have confirmed they are investigating after receiving reports of criminal damage to a charity premises.

The force say it is reported that a group of unidentified youths gained access to the rear garden of the property causing "significant damage" to the communal space, plants and garden features.

They said several windows were also damaged as a result of the incident.

Watch sped-up footage initially captured on the charity's CCTV and see the destruction that has been left in the video above.

Eileen Wright, who is the manager at the centre, said it has been devastating.

"We use the garden as therapy for our people – many elderly and the majority have got some form of dementia," she said.

"It’s really therapeutic for them. They have been putting the garden together.

"[They] thoroughly enjoyed it. Came in yesterday morning to it absolutely and utterly destroyed.

"You’ve never seen such a mess. It was so upsetting because they were in tears."

She said she believes those responsible are youths.

"We had our CCTV cameras," she said. "They ripped them down, took the cameras and broke the others.

"They are only youngsters unfortunately but they were really out for destruction.

"They didn’t seem to care. They are laughing at the cameras then just destroyed them as well."

But Eileen says she wants to thank those that have offered their help and said a working party will be put together to "clear things".

"[Those that have worked on the garden] range from aged 70 up to 80-odd years old," she said. "Their creation has been destroyed over night.

"They [the culprits] have actually been back again [Thursday] night. We are waiting to put a working party together to clear things. They have been throwing things around.

"We have told the local police and they have been really helpful, one of them has even offered to come and help do the gardens."

One woman, Miss Hardy, is a full-time carer for her grandma who has "severe dementia", and takes her to the day centre from Monday to Friday.

"In five years, it’s the only thing that’s put a smile on her face," she said. "The centre staff and members worked so hard over the past month to make their garden into a bright, colourful, safe space for the members to enjoy.

"One member is 86 and she’s been on her hands and knees planting pots up over the past four weeks. On June 9, it was finally finished. All the members went outside and thoroughly enjoyed themselves basking in the sunshine, interacting with the garden."

She continued: "Later that evening, some youths decided to rip that away from them (quite literally). They went into the (secure) garden and trashed it. Completely.

"Smashed pots, pulled their beach hut to pieces, they even ripped the bird boxes off the walls, killing a fledgling in the process.

"They’ve also smashed 17 windows. This has absolutely devastated the centre. They are a voluntary, privately funded service, meaning they must now repair and replace everything themselves."

Miss Hardy said she understands donations are now being taken.

"The youths were caught on CCTV and Humberside Police are making every effort to identify the youths in the video," she said. "They are taking donations as they are now looking at creating an indoor garden so that this doesn’t happen again, with a few nice garden ornaments that they can take outside and bring back in on a night time.

"They’re also looking at donations towards a new alarm system to help prevent this from happening again."

A spokeswoman from Humberside Policesaid: "An investigation is underway after we received reports of criminal damage to a charity premises on Ashton Close, Hull, this morning (Thursday, June 10) at 8.40am.

"It is reported that a group of unidentified youths have gained access to the rear garden of the property causing significant damage to the communal space, plants and garden features.

"Several windows were also damaged as a result of the incident."

Community Beat Manager Adam Barley added: “Communal areas are there to be enjoyed by our communities, it is totally unacceptable for premises like these to be damaged.

“Anti-social behaviour is an issue we continue to proactively tackle working in partnership with the local authority and secondary schools in a bid to minimise incidents of this nature.

“Officers are currently working to identify those involved in causing the damage. If you have any information that could assist us with our enquiries please call 101 quoting investigation log 131 of 10 June or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the charity restore the garden. To view the fundraising page for more information, click here.

They may be young, but isn't that the right time to educate them? I mean teach them right from wrong.

When I was their age, a policeman knocked on our door because I'd been seen to kick a football, skied it, and broke a neighbours bedroom window.

I was mortified, the police had come to get me. But that wasn't the end. My Mam was so upset, because it wasn't the first time I'd been in trouble. That was what got to me, seeing mam cry and it was down to me.

Mam went to see our headmaster and had a word (she wasn't blaming the school in any way, she just wanted help).

That was in the days of corporal punishment in schools and **** me did I go through the mill.

    I learned my lesson.

I can't leave this without saying I ****ing loved that school and all the teachers, friends and almost everybody who helped shape me and many others.

Mam, Dad and Shaw Park School on Orchard Park Estate. Thank you <ok>

    Good post:emoticon-0148-yes:

It was different back in our day,we were more disciplined at home and at school?

I remember vandalising a fence at the allotments in Driffield with my mate.We broke 22 pailings in one of those old style picket style fences(kicking them in).Took about a week but the Police eventually turned up and we had to go to the station on a pre-arranged day and time, with a parent, and get a rollicking off the top kiddy(I think it was termed a superintendents warning at the time but wouldn't argue over it).We had to pay for the damage too,£22,and of course a hammering off my old man!! No pocket money, grounded and a sore arse taught me not to go around damaging other people's property...

We may have strayed on the odd occasion back then but the punishment was swift and fairly severe.Nowadays it just seems so different and a lot of things go un-punished?
