WTF was Marshall doing so far out of his goal. Massively overrated imo. Never commanded the box. Also never seen a keeper just not dive/attempt to save a shot and just watch them whiz in. Think he did it vs Brentford for 3 of there 5 goals a couple of years back. Got subbed the ****.
My work was decked out in Scotland flags. Everyone in blue...except me...we work within 100 meters of hampden...carlsberg don't do results.......
As long as we don’t get embarrassed by Scotland. The only time I went to the old Wembley was v Scotland, back end of ‘99, we lost 0-1 & absolutely ****e performance after beating them 2-0 at Hampden. Keegan out of his depth!
A lot of people not really understanding goalkeping on here. I'm no marshal fan but if he's been asked to squeeze up in an attempt close the gap behind the defence and deal with balls over the top then there's really not much he can do. He might be slightly annoyed at himself for not seeing the danger a split second earlier but they're chasing the game at this point so he probably positioned where you'd expect him to be.
He was ridiculously high up the field. His job is to protect the goal. If his manager told him to do it then he wants bloody shooting. When they started to attack he was near the center circle.
Fraction of a second between the ball spinning loose and the attack starting. If it had been a structured attack and he was caught that high then he would want stringing up. I think in this scenario its harsh to lay much blame at his door. Next top level game you watch see the position of their keeper. Ederson, allison neuer etc. They all play a hight line to cut out the long ball and to start attacks. Now im not putting marshal even remotelyclose to those guys. He was **** for most of his time with us, but point im making is his positioning wasnt unusual.
He was out of position, might not have been by a huge amount, but at international level, those little things make a difference. As proved by the end result
Schick certainly expected him to be there. He said he'd seen him do it in other games, so had it in his mind to try if he got the opportunity.
Fair enough, but i still dont think hes massively at fault. Its a pretty standard position for a lot of keepers to take up. Fair play to the lad for having the vision and talent to pull off the finish.
Id have to respectfully disagree. Its not a position all keepers take but its a risk vs reward scenario. If hed have been 10 yards further back and a ball was played into that spacw between him and his last defender leading to a 1 on 1 and probabal goal. He wouldnt have been chastised for that but he would have swept the ball up or stopped it even being played due to his position. And the through ball scenario is more likely in the vast majority of games.
Agreed And it was an outstanding finish Nothing said about the sweaty in midfield who royally ****ed up LoSing the ball like that was criminal
In Sunday league it was a different thing altogether. You'd just stay in your area and come charging out as soon as there was any danger, that always worked. But these are Europes best players and you're bound to **** it up doing that. I thought Marshall was a bit unlucky tbh, you don't get lobbed like that ever day. It doesn't matter anyway. It was only the sweatie bastards
Think even Shearer commented on it during their coverage .. all modern keepers come out to act as sweeper during such situations.. but not that far out and he was quite blunt about it.
