But defoe is not a reasonable comparison is he? He has been a premier league and international striker from a young age. Of course he is much better. That is why I used League 1 level strikers, or those who have progressed from League 1 to the championship. I would also like a Defoe type player and we would be better but that is unrealistic, certainly a younger Defoe, although he has just signed again for Rangers so even an older Defoe is out of our reach.

Defoe was a premier league striker. Top of his game. One of the best English strikers.
Wyke is a third division striker. A pretty good one if last season is anything to go by.

going to use the bold bit to make a point. He doesn’t take penalties (never has) which surely makes his goal scoring feats more impressive last season. Imagine if he could! We got at least 5 penalties. 35 goals season just gone. Probably still wouldn’t be enough but despite everything you’ve mentioned above, he still got 30 goals (13 or 14 from McGeady assists I believe). I agree he’s not a great footballer (as I’ve said before), but, last season, he was an excellent league 1 striker.

you asked compare Wyke to Defoe post 119 i did and yes i agreed with you, but listing his faults i shocked myself and we will be well rid of him, if Curry had been given the opportunities he has had, we can only speculate but he is plying his trade in America and scoring goals against european starts like Defoe did

Sorry mate, I wasnt asking anyone to compare Wyke to Defoe. I was asking another poster if he was comparing Wyke to Defoe, but on re-reading I think he was saying Defoe would bring a better record. I agree he would have done, but still dont think it is a realistic shout as he has signed with Rangers again.

Defoe struggled in America which is why we got him as a straight swap for Jozy Altidore. That’s better than a free transfer. Altidore is higher thought of over there.

I didn’t ask, think you’ve got me and Felltop mixed up as we’re both singing Charlie’s praises. But I think @FellTop intonation in his post was more an exasperated one than a “let’s compare the 2”! As in “don’t be silly, you can’t compare those 2”. Lost in text

no way we could ever know if Curry would be better. I’m guessing not as very few would’ve done better than what Wyke achieved. Not sure how you can’t see how incredible his achievements this season were. His best ever season fir any club, still not good enough fir Sunderland!

some very good points in your posts in this thread, i have no idea what it is with wyke as the lad contributed goals that we were crying out for, i just never ever felt like he was likely to score unless the ball was put in exactly the right place for it to basically bounce off him into the net and i think others felt the same and that is why we just cannot 'warm' to him...i wonder what kind of figures he would get if he had some kind of ball control, it is quite scary actually.

i honestly do not have any bad feeling towards him and wish him well if/when he leaves...if he stayed and scored 60 goals next season i still think i would struggle to appreciate him and i have no idea why.

i know how you fell about Wyke by reading your posts Marcus i know how you feel about him ,and no doubt you know how i stand as regards him, we have a new exciting striker in the under 21s so looking forward to the coming season i know we will do better, we have 5 potential future Prem stars for next season if he plays them they are good enough if he doesn't give them a chance they will be away, as last season showed he plays his favorites and only changes when injured, he has to give the young guys a chance to see

Cheers mate. I do understand and appreciate the views on Wykes limitations and how we play with him in the side. I am not saying he is a brilliant footballer nor that we cant do much better as a team overall. I just think he gets a bit of a rough deal but it is all about opinions. I know we all want a team next season that tears up the league playing good football.

I know your feelings rig absolutely. But can I just ask, before the season started, would you have been happy with Wyke scoring 30 goals and little else?

every one of his goals. 15 headers and 16 with his feet. Some very, very good finishes in among them too. Including a few 1v1s. Surprising just how good some of the finishes are.

he seems to get stick fir most being “one touch finishes” too. Give me a striker who can score without needing the second touch any day!

on reflection no we had attacking wingers and good midfield, playing Wyke as the main striker stopped most of our other options and when the other teams worked out how to stop him, we were ****ed, the last i belive 15 games he was marked out of those games, and spent his time on a pushing match, from memory his goals came from the poorer teams in the league and not the top teams

Not on reflection. If someone said, at the start of the season, would you be happy if Wyke gets 30 goals, your response would’ve been “of course but he won’t”.

Scored against Lincoln *(3 of 4 games), Ipswich (both games), MK dons, Doncaster, Portsmouth. So not just the poorer teams.

yet did one of them goals come from a piece of his individual skill, and not by someone else doing all the work and putting it on a plate for him and in a lot of cases he couldn't even do that. How about you watch some of his misses a 6 year old would score like 1 in 4 watch the 3 he missed, then try and stop laughing, This is my final word on this subject pleased to see the back of him.

“It’s my ball and I’m taking it home” grow up man Roger. I wonder how many Clarke-Harris etc missed. He’s a 3rd division striker. If he scored every chance, he wouldn’t be!

I wonder how well those 6 year olds would’ve done with the op chances he scored! The little lob over the keeper, the wrong foot volley against Ipswich, the plethora of very good headers.

Sp you’re basically telling me that, if someone said “Wyke will score 30 this season” , that wouldn’t have been enough? No hindsight or reflection, just knowing only what you knew about Wyke at the start of the season? You know it would have been. As well as I do. McGeady, who you keep on saying laid his goals on, only laid them on because of Wyke’s movement. Ie, he broke his assists record last season, because of Wyke’s goals

mate im fully grown and allowed an opinion and have not insulted, I don't want to fall out over this nacker as in my opinion he will never be anything other than a poor league one player, and unless the next team find someone to put them on a plate for him he will fail miserably

Mate we never disagree about how good a footballer he is. I don’t rate him. But I rate him as a league 1 striker last season. At the start of the season I wouldn’t have been bothered if he left. Season gone I’m not bothered if he leaves. Which tells you where I am about him. He’s awful to watch, not great as a player, but was very good last season. Just saying, we’d all, you included if you’re honest, have been delighted if we knew he’d get 30 goals. He had a very good season. He wasn’t a great “player” last season, but he certainly was a very good league 1 striker

I don't think your wrong but I believe that until we replace him we will be no more than a decent League one team, and can forget all about promotion.

At the start of last season I wouldnt have put a pound on him to score 30 at 5000/1. It was improbable. It was like watching an entirely different player after Johnson came and got us higher up the pitch. The chances of him getting 30 again next season again will be massive though as it is so hard, and I still wouldnt put a pound on it, and as Rog says to an extent we got worked out, particularly when teams doubled up on McGeady and he started getting forced inside.

I am still interested to see who we sign, or who people think we should sign. I suspect we might be surprised at whoever it is. Whoever it is I look forward to seeing they are. I always look forward to see the likes of Hawkes and Neil play. Neil particularly in my opinion has potential to really shine.

I really enjoy reading your posts, but I noticed that Wykes old habits had returned in the run in , probably those last 10 or so games, he kept running behind defenders instead of across them hoping for a mistake rather than trying to beat them to the ball, I think that was the main reason for his ineffective contributions. This makes me wonder about LJ, who kept leaving him on for the duration of every game, rather than try something different, as alternatives were available but never tested, this is a real concern for me, but I watch with interest.
