Should have been a pen, no question. Robbo stood on Sterling's foot, clear as day. But had we got it and scored it would have been a win we didn't really earn.

I like a leftie on the left. Tripper's good going forward on the right, but cant go outside and cross left side, which I thought was exposed vs Croatia. I think Chilwell just edges Shaw, but no more tinkering there, stick with Shaw. Decide on Trippier or Walker for experience on right. Probably Trippier as we have been poor from set pieces, and Walker does have a mistake in him. So, we've sorted full backs! I think he's always intended to go three at the back and will do so as soon as he thinks Harry can last 90 mins. That's why he picked 300 right backs, as Walker/James have both played right side in a three.
Having just watched Germany, and realised how much we have to improve, it's all irrelevant anyway! I was positive yesterday.

Yeah, it would have bean injustice, but a penalty is a penalty, same as France should have had one today right at the end.

I thought Chilwell was generally regarded as our best left back, why has he dropped down the pecking order?

For me, it was an absolute stonewaller, The panel and both channels didn't think so and many on here didn't, and I just dont understand why! Should surely have gone to VAR and then it was conclusive that there was contact, Raheem intentionally lured him in to it too. I dont know why we weren't surrounding the ref, which would have pushed him into using VAR? Lack of experience again? Or maybe too embarrassed?

You're right of course but it's nice to see natural justice now and again...

After today's games, I suspect Germany will be 2nd in Group F?
Having said that Febbos pointed out that if we came second, we'd likely play Sweden in the last 16 but after that is the much stronger half.

Yeah I think we’d then have to go through France and Italy in the quarters and semis.

I’m not one for trying to fix your group position, especially when it doesn’t work out in the long run

Agreed! We need to take it as it comes.A good performance and win on Tuesday would set us up in confidence terms for whoever we get next:emoticon-0148-yes:

This is what we needed against the jocks

The most famously invigorated, on England's side? Alan Ball. 'It's pretty common knowledge that Alf Ramsey did not like the Scots,' Malcolm Macdonald told Ball's biographer. 'But his dislike was nothing compared to Bally's hatred.'

Martin Chivers recalled arriving at Hampden Park with the team bus rocking from side to side 'because Bally was signalling to all the Scotland supporters what he thought of them - we used to scream at him to sit down.'

In 1972, Ball took this antagonism to a new level. In the first half he hacked down Billy Bremner with his first tackle and later scored and celebrated wildly.

In the second, he sat on the ball to wind the clock down while flicking V-signs at the locals, before taking it into the corner and wiping his nose on the Scottish flag fluttering from the pole.

'We'll never get out of here alive,' Chivers remembers thinking. Yet when Ball died, the Glasgow Herald remembered him with affection.

'He should have been one of us,' read the obituary. 'Red-haired, crabbit, never beaten and able to pass off either foot, Ball seemed to be separated from his football twin, Bremner, at birth.'

the ball was going out but rather than stop it Sterling didn't play the ball but instead put his right foot across in front of Robertson to try and get hit - as usual Sterling then dived - if Sterling kept on his feet and played the ball rather than forever diving he might be a better player, as it is he's an embarrassment which is why he's disliked so much

I don’t like this talk of tactically finishing 2nd in the group so we have an easier round of 16 match. It’s a tinpot mentality. Our path to the last World Cup semi-finals was the easiest and when we finally came up against decent opposition, we lost. The media ****ed themselves silly over Southgate because he managed to beat Colombia on penalties and beat Sweden and he’s been living off that for three years now.

If we’re not good enough, I’d rather we get beat sooner rather than later so the FA can **** Southgate off.

He stood on his foot while he had the chance to still get a cross in. I do agree reputation preceded him. Spain just got a pen which was given. Identical situation. Stood on his foot. Actually attacker had got the ball away before defender stood on his foot, so was less of a penalty.

Can’t help thinking that we’ve focussed on getting through the group, and the style of play has been ideal for that, but missed the opportunity to get used to playing the type of football that you need at the knockout stages (unless you’re relying on penalties then you need to be creative and incisive when there’s a chance to score)
Maybe that’s what we always try to do?

Just received a phone call from my best mate (& best man at my wedding). A very useful & speedy Rugby Union back in his time, progressing from fly half through centre to winger as he aged, and not a bad football player too. Born & bred in Hull he was, so no negative bias.

His comments on the England performance yesterday were:

“That was like watching a rubbish, inferior R.U. team , poorly managed with little ingenuity or tactical flexibility. Following the rules of the game reasonably well (no forward passing !), but none of the essential speed of thought to outwit the doughty opposition. Where was the required forward movement with the ball? What is it, 40 places in the rankings advantage? Disgrace.”

No wonder so many are disappointed with the result. Full credit to the Scottish manager & players.
