I expect to see us linked with loads of strikers now as agents and journalists assume we are desperately trying to replace Wyke. Will possibly make signing strikers slightly harder as well as agents and clubs will now be more cognisant of our need.
You're probably right, but,if our creativity, energy and tempo in midfield is better, and we've got decent wide play from McGeady and Diamond,Gooch in and around Stewart might not do us too bad. I've thought for a while that Gooch may be better suited more centrally......he's got two good feet,is mobile and knows where the goal is. He's a bit head down when he's wide....feeding off Stewart's flicks and knockdowns,....which we think he's capable of....might be just what we need. We may not need to throw anything at another target man up front.
Wouldnt say i am gutted. I would say I am disappointed though. Although it has been clear he isnt staying for a while so I am getting over it. To me he showed what he is about under Johnson. He is a hell of an instinctive finisher whose movement in the box is excellent, which is the other side of the success from McGeady crosses. 30 goals in a season rarely happens so he must be a player. No idea if Wigan will be right for him or not, but as of now we are 30 goals short of last season. I have faith in the new team though, lets see how they replace those goals and add more hopefully.
Don’t know if this has been said previously so apologies if it has but just seen a tweet about how the contract offered to Wyke isn’t what he expected, it’s clear we didn’t want to keep him. He doesn’t play the game we want our strikers to play. The contract was purely offered because if he accepted its a good plan B to have a man who can get on the end of a cross. I don’t get the panic about not being able to match Wigan. For me it seems crazy to spend £10k a week on a 3 year contract for a player who relies so heavily on Mcgeady. Chances are Mcgeady won’t be playing in 3 seasons either so the reality is you’d then have to spend another £10k on a player that can put the ball on a plate like Mcgeady did. I’m not taking away Wykes contribution from last season but you have to play a certain way for him to work. He made us very one dimensional and we very quickly got found out. I think it’s best for us to move on providing we spend the money we are saving wisely which I am confident we will do.
Grigg wasn't part of the squad back end last season. Stewart effectively replaced Grigg as a squad member. We had Stewart, Wyke and O'Brien as options. Now we have Stewart, Grigg and O'Brien. So we are at the same numbers of strikers as we were last season. We all want improvements up front, but I can only see strikers coming in on a 1 in 1 out basis with Grigg and O'Brien. Hope I'm wrong.
Weather in squad or not he was on books. We're also threadbare in all areas. Striker along with keeper are most important areas of team. If we're relying on Stewart imo were risking promotion. Obrien we know isn't up to it and should look to loan out if we can't sell. We need a quick striker with movement alongside those being linked.
unfortunately you may well be correct, i will not be over-happy if we only have grigg and obrien supporting stewart but they have hardly put themselves in the old 'shop window' with performances, grigg did ok on his loan spell but obviously not enough (or he is not cheap enough) to force a move. stewart alone gives more options than we had with wyke, he showed he can run with the ball and can take more than one touch without confusing himself, i think he also held the ball up better than wyke but it would be nice to have 'some little tw@t in the box' to feed off him imho.
We need to show a bit of ambition in recruitment, Messi is stalling on signing back for Barca. Go on KLD put a cheeky offer his way.
