I would expect we have made contact with the top 3 or 4 options on the list for each position we want to fill. For those we get a response that suggests it could be possible we probably then talk to the player to see what his motivations are and his personality and character. Then we talk to the club about what it will take to get them, probably agents as well. That is a hell of a lot of work to get the reduced shortlist in place. Then it seems likely to me we are going for a number of prem loans or championship players. Those clubs will be saying happy to agree in principle but wait until we are happy to release or when we have replacements. Man U did exactly that with their u23s, saying they will go on loan but only once all the internationals return to pre-season and are up to speed because they wanted the u23s involved from a numbers perspective. It may very well be the case we have already done a deal for players in those situations but we have to wait a couple of weeks. I would rather wait to get the players Johnson wants than buy those down the list. In that scenario any failure will be at his door.

I think we need more players but the players we have need time to gel. Takes 6-10 games to build understandings. I am still confident we will go up this season.
Last night looked good, the game before we looked solid. I have no worries at all at this time. It is a long long season.

we all want the same thing lads, from the youngest supporter to our new owner but we all need to stop worrying about stuff we have zero control over...you are going to make yourselves ill.

yes, we may well have had more players in and in an ideal world they would all be first choice 'class' players, as has been said, just because we might like the look of a player does not mean that both clubs will agree on a valuation, even if the other club wants to see that player leave (freebies are obviously completely different)...then, we are sunderland, big club = lots of money to agents and not often most of them have the chance to push for bigger slices of the cake so negotiations tend to stumble quite often.

afraid we have little choice other than to be patient, years of the club going down the pan have to be put right and i for one no longer want to see 'quick fixes' as none have worked so far, we really have to rebuild from the ground up and should we get it right this season then great but we might have to grind our teeth while things fall into place.

It's important to remember that no league titles or promotions are decided in July. Whilst it's important we start we'll, I'd rather we built gradually than crash panic buying. Had this been previous regimes I'd be panicking slightly. I trust all the recruitment team involved to get it right.

I always recount the urban myth off a few seasons back when the chancer rang a few clubs on transfer deadline day and asked them what they got... We signed an injured left-back from Leeds

Got a calmer cap on today, although I can’t say I am not worried (part and parcel of the job of an SAFC fan) I have accepted the fact that we can’t let things like assumptions stress us out, just have to wait and see what happens, I’d like us to have at least one new face in by the weekend (whether or not that happens is something to have no clue over) and maybe 2 or 3 in total by the hull game and depending on who they are our squad would look stronger, HAWAY

    3. Got Friday's Euromillions numbers there mate?

Similar for me, i've been pretty relaxed as I know the new owners won't let us down but don't want to get to a week before the window closes with a few still to come in. We desperately need at least one striker, Wyke got plenty of stick by many but you can't argue with his goals return last season, 30 goals is very hard to replace, I will be amazed if we can sign someone who will match that next season.

I agree with all of that and it will definitely take quite a while to rebuild the academy, but they are making strides in that area.

I think people realise that it wouldn't take a massive improvement on last years first team squad to achieve our promotion goal. In my opinion, the 3 we have brought in so far, are exactly the type of players we should be looking at. Two of them are experienced and when you add them to Gooch, McGeady and O'Nien, half of the outfield players will fall under the experienced category.

I think the plan is to then bring in young, hungry players like Doyle to work alongside the experienced players and it is this that is taking time. We appear to be looking at young Premier League players in need of League experience. If Sanderson and Doyle are anything to go by, this seems the right way to go. This approach means that we need to express our interest in these players, but we also have to understand that their parent clubs need time to assemble their own squads before they release them.

I agree that patience is key and we will get things right before the end of the window, but I am not one of those who feels that promotion at the end of this coming season is beyond us because of the rebuild. As a club we should be going all out for promotion, and questions asked and fingers pointed,if we don't achieve it.

Im all for asking questions if we don't go up but I genuinely don't think this is a 1 year quick fix . Our problems are huge behind the scenes and just getting sorted now. I just hope the baby doesn't go out with the bath water if we don't go up with fans kicking off. We have already seen Johnson getting grief outside the SoL. As long as I see progress on and off the pitch, a clear plan and style of play I'll be happy.

This is our 4th year in league 1 which is too long we need to go up this season and I fear if we don't the support will turn big time

It's definitely not a quick fix mate, but we narrowly missed out on promotion last season and have lost no players that I wouldn't want to lose.

If we can get another 5 or 6 in over the next 5-6 weeks (1 per week) as Johnson said he would like, who are of the same calibre as the 3 we have signed, do you not think we will have a stronger squad than last year and should therefore go that one step further than we did last season by achieving promotion?

It's football, it's not as straightforward as that though. Another 23 teams will have a say, covid may come back and cancel games etc. It's going to be interesting to see how it pans out either way. Strap in for a bumpy ride....

Why is it too long? Club has been ripped apart for years. Needs a complete rebuild from the bottom up. We won't win promotion just because we were once the 'Bank of England' club or because we beat Leeds in 73. It doesn't work like that unfortunately.

Footballers move a lot. Especially at lower levels. If they don't want to come you've got to wonder why. The recruitment team have had 2 months and so far have come up woefully short.

But you don't know that they've come up woefully short and you won't until the transfer window closes. Even then, they can't legislate for a player's personal circumstances so to say they've come up short might be inaccurate. You also don't know that players don't want to come. All you know is that only a certain number have arrived so far.

Ipswich wigan and dons to name just 3. They may not have the greatest signings I'm world football but it's obvious they have a plan and squads now gelling together. Half the boards are making excuses sadly, you can be sure you'll hear usual ****e from speakman and lj about how tough it is getting players and how we're playing catch up on teams who have signings. It's just not acceptable to still be here next year so any thought of that should be stamped right out. We've the facilities, fan base and resources. The rest of the league should be cannon fodder to us.

And as for the lottery comment ffs that's just the sort of petulant statement that stifles debate.
