Exactly. I'd be shocked if they're not working on something but it could be too little too late which I think is what lj is worried about and he'd know more than us.
Anyway I'm off to bed now. Not to sleep just like lj hopefully we'll have a positive announcement tomorrow.
This is what worries me, the why behind our lack of signings - when the club obviously trumpeted having these pre-prepared lists before last season ended. Why say that then if not in the expectation of a number of early signings? Then no early signings leaves me wondering what has gone wrong. Were those listed unavailable? Unwilling to come? Too expensive? What does this say about the realism underpinning the lists and those who compiled them? This is what worries me as much as the lack of players.
looking at the list of transfers posted earlier, i am thinking it less of a 'worry' at the minute...but i am starting to think it might have been a bad move from the club to make so much about this new data driven policy and the fact that targets had been identified, only for us to appear to be struggling to fill places. having said that, none of us actually know what has gone on or is ongoing behind the scenes so we just have to put our faith in those that do.
There could be any number of factors. We as fans often see ourselves as a big club and that players will never get another opportunity at this level to play for a club of our size and stature. The reality is that we had difficulty signing players whilst in the PL and had to increase their wages to make ourselves look attractive (at least that's how it appeared). Wages in League 1 are considerably lower as you'd expect which would possibly make the thought of uprooting your family quite unappealing. I'm fairly certain that none of us would move the length of the country for 100 quid a week more if we were settled. It's also a lot colder in the NE than it is down south in winter. Then there's the domino effect. PL teams haven't made many signings yet which in turn means that he Champ clubs are holding off and so on. Maybe a few of the players we're looking at are at the Olympics at the moment. U23 fits the brief
Of course bad atmosphere at the club and it’s fanbase leads to worse performances. And fewer players wanting to play for us. That will never make it the fans’ fault tho. We have the best fans in the world.
When you look at it very few clubs win silverware and it is the ambition of most clubs in the premiership to still be in it next season. We might have struggled to stay there but 10 consecutive seasons in the premiership would be seen by many clubs as great success. They might have said we stank the place out for the last 5 or so seasons, but our numerous great escapes brought much entertainment - and I bet all neutral fans were overjoyed with Gus' miracle at the bridge when we ended the unbeaten home run of the special one's Chelsea team. You also overlook the size of our fan base and potential for income generation. SAFC has the 10th biggest stadium capacity of any English football club. That sort of implies where the club should be positioned - in English football's top 10 clubs. I'm not saying we have a divine right to that position, but it should be a realistic aspiration and four seasons in tier 3 can, in view of the club's potential, only be viewed as a great failure.
Those who get bits and bobs (they know who they are) don't seem to be stressed right now, that's good enough for me. Insofar as a bunch of weirdo's discussing safc on t'interweb (I include myself), opinions actually matter one iota.
didn’t say there was. I said the longer we stay down here the worse it will get. You only have to look at some of the messages people are sending Speakman on Twitter to see that there is a pretty **** feeling amongst fans right now though, which can’t not be evident to the players and staff
Potential, stadium size, yada, yada. Means nowt. The here and now means we're fighting with the Ipswich's and Portsmouth's and Wigan's of this world for the better 'bottom end' players to try to get us out of this league. There's two things to remember - one, we DID stink the PL out, we were the equivalent of the old First division Coventry City - always hanging around and never doing the decent thing and just ****ing off out, and two, our fall from grace was spectacularly abysmal. Neither of which are great selling points to potential signings. KLD and his team have barely got their feet under the table, exactly how much progress are people expecting after a few months, before the window has shut and before a ball has been kicked in anger? Far too much Covid/Lockdown tension kicking around I think.
