The days when non-league was considered a cheap and cheerful alternative appear long-gone, £41 for the National League Play-Off Final with no concessions and it's not even at Wembley, f*cking daylight robbery...

UEFA Eliminates Away Goal Rule For 2021-22 Season
    June 25, 2021 2:24 AM
UEFA scraps away goals rule ahead of 2021-22 season
UEFA has announced the away goals rule will no longer be used in any of the organisation's club competitions for the 2021-22 season.
please log in to view this image

The regulation was first introduced in 1965 to decide the outcome of a two-legged knockout tie in cases where the teams were level on aggregate.

However, statistical data has shown a reduction in the gap between home and away wins, according to data released by the governing body on Wednesday, as well as the average number of goals scored at home and on the road.

Following the recommendation of both its club competitions committee and women's football committee, UEFA has abolished the ruling for the upcoming campaign, with the change made ahead of the start of the qualifying phases.

"The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement.

"However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various UEFA meetings over the last few years. Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.

"The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.

"There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored."

Analysing data stretching back to the mid-1970s, UEFA revealed how the success rate for teams at home in men's competitions had dropped from 61 to 47 per cent, while away wins had risen from just 19 per cent up to 30 per cent.

"It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was," Ceferin said.

"Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the UEFA executive committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home."

The decision means away goals will no longer be a factor to consider in the Champions League, Europa League and the new Europa Conference League, as well as the Women's Champions League.

    Palace appoint Viera as manager.

That could be a good call.

I guess it all depends on whether he gets along with the owner, Parish.
The owner seems like a 'my way or the highway' sort of person.
Otherwise, as you say, its could be a great opportunity for Viera to finally stamp his credentials as a manager in England.

Interesting appointment Sb. He has only done moderately well as a manager so far in his two jobs. That said I’m sure he’s learnt a lot from those two management roles (as I think our own MW seems to have learnt from his previous roles and challenges). Seeing him on TV, he always strikes me as a slightly softer person - which could be why they have said he lost the dressing room at Nice when under pressure.

It will be an interesting watch from the sidelines.

Former Sunderland footballer Paul Conlon has been jailed after he killed his father in a drunken row on Christmas Eve.

Conlon punched his 77-year-old father Harry Conlon several times in the head and face after an argument at the family home in Sunderland last year.

The 43-year-old was staying with his parents and had come downstairs shortly before 3pm in an intoxicated state, which let to an argument with his father.

Conlon then sat on top of his dad, delivering repeated blows.

Police arrived at the address a short time after where they found the 77-year-old in a dazed state with some blood around his ear.

He was taken to hospital with a suspected bleed on the brain while officers arrested Conlon and took him into custody.

His father died three weeks later in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Conlon was then re-arrested and was due to stand trial for his murder.

However, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the start of his trial at Newcastle Crown Court - a plea which was accepted by prosecutors.

A judge then sentenced him 11 years and 10 months in prison at the same court on Thursday.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Fairlamb, of Northumbria Police, said: "Every death is always a tragedy but this was an especially sad incident that has ruined many people's lives.

"Paul's actions that day, while under the influence of alcohol, have had irreversible consequences and have caused a huge amount of pain and anguish.

"I hope this case acts as a serious reminder to everybody about what can happen when you throw a punch.

"Paul made a choice when turning to violence and sadly that decision has had heart-breaking consequences.

"There is absolutely no place for violence in our communities and we will continue to use all tactics at our disposal to ensure perpetrators are brought before the courts."

    Alert! Alert!

John Terry leaves coaching role at Villa to ‘go into management’

Perhaps there will be a vacancy at newly relegated Bristol Rovers, whose charming manager, Joseph Barton, now has two upcoming court appearances - on for (allegedly) assaulting the manager of Barnsley a couple of years ago, and one for (allegedly) beating up his wife in June.

Perhaps they could work as a team?

Apparently one of the first things the new manager of Bayern munich did was to compel Thomas Müller to go to the clubs pedicurist - apparently he found his toenails disgusting <laugh> Maybe this was why he missed an open goal at Wembley !

Sorry, but JB is a serial miscreant. Always one to give someone a second or third chance, but he is someone who seemingly will never change and seems to believe he can behave any way he likes. Why on earth would you want this person in a role of leadership near your club.
And to think it wasn’t that long ago JB was slagging off MW. He has a long way to go before he is in a position to put down anyone after his accumulated history.

Harry Kane hits nuclear button but must hope it does not blow up in his face

Tottenham striker has let himself down by failing to turn up and his move will only harden Daniel Levy’s position

So now we know. Harry Kane really is prepared to do whatever it takes to force a move from Tottenham to Manchester City. The question had nagged away since the final week of last season when Kane and his camp had given the definitive signal that they wanted out and the battle lines were drawn, with Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, digging in and refusing to countenance the sale.

Would Kane be prepared to activate the nuclear option and withdraw his cooperation at Spurs? Surely not, most people had hoped, because to do the dirty like this would be so unbecoming of a homegrown hero, of an England captain.

Angry Spurs stand firm and will fine Harry Kane after he fails to show up
    Read more

And yet on Monday morning, Kane did the dirty, he did the bad thing, the last-resort play, when he refused to turn up for his first day of pre-season tests and checks. Now we knew.

What a mess, and the first thing to say is that Kane has let himself down. There has been some understanding among Spurs fans about his desire to join a club that can challenge for the biggest prizes this season, even if none of them have wanted to picture the reality of him actually wearing the colours of a rival.

They know how Spurs ended the previous season – without a permanent manager, with qualification only to the new Europa Conference League (they have been drawn to face Paços de Ferreira or Larne in the play-off round), with disarray the most prominent sentiment. And they know that under Nuno Espírito Santo, appointed as José Mourinho’s replacement after a chaotic 72-day search, it is likely that there will be a period of transition.

Why should Kane, who turned 28 last Wednesday and has not won any team honours, want to stick around for that? Most of the supporter anger has been directed at Levy for enabling the climate for such a situation to develop.

Kane was on a reasonably firm footing. Everybody knows that he wants to leave. Why not sit tight, focus on his conditioning and respect his contract for another month while the negotiations with City – or any other high-bidding club – play out? It has been obvious that Kane, after a three-week post-Euro 2020 break, will struggle to be fit for Spurs’ season-opener on Sunday week, coincidentally against City, and, thereafter, they have only two league matches before the transfer window closes – against Wolves and Watford on 22 and 29 August respectively. Kane has gone early with the awol move.

The upside of not reporting for work is questionable because one thing is plain – it will only harden Levy’s position, his resolve that Kane is not for sale and, if he absolutely is to be prised away, it would be for an eye-watering sum, which is rather more than the £100m City have offered. The defending champions have dismissed as nonsense the notion that they would pay £160m. Players in part-exchange could enter the equation but those deals are notoriously difficult to balance.

The downside for Kane is the reputational damage. He has built a career upon single-mindedness, an ability to blot out the criticism and background noise in pursuit of his goals, and it has long been held up as a positive. It no longer feels entirely that way.

Kane’s decision comes from a place of overwhelming frustration, at how he feels trapped by the six-year deal that he signed in 2018 and the lack of success of his exit strategy, which has been marked, increasingly, by openness. He wanted to leave last summer only for Levy to stand in his way and the terms of a so-called gentleman’s agreement for a departure this time are open to interpretation.

Kane has perhaps learned a lesson from history, having seen the lengths to which previous Spurs stars had to stoop to drive moves. Levy refused to say whether Dimitar Berbatov had gone on strike to get his transfer to Manchester United in 2008 – the striker missed matches against Sunderland and Chelsea before the deal went through – although a quote from the chairman was telling. “That’s something you’re going to have to ask him but, clearly, he didn’t play for those two games,” Levy said in November of that year.

Luka Modric failed to board the flight for a tour to the United States in the summer of 2012 – the one in which he eventually joined Real Madrid – and Gareth Bale became difficult in the summer of the following year before also going to Real. By the end of that transfer window, Bale was refusing to report for training. “It’s up to the club to decide if it’s a fineable offence,” said André Villas-Boas, the manager at the time. Levy had blocked Modric’s proposed move to Chelsea in the summer of 2011, despite the player claiming he had a gentleman’s agreement with him.

The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email.
And yet those dramas were from different times and it would probably be wise to look purely at the current circumstances, with Levy operating in a coronavirus-scarred financial landscape, fan unrest high and Kane’s goals, not to mention what he means to the club, feeling extremely hard to replace.

Spurs were not prepared to discuss whether Kane was on strike and there are other more obvious imponderables, including the player’s mindset if he were retained against his will. Levy would hope that Kane simply gets over the disappointment.

What next? Will Kane be in on Tuesday? Spurs do not know. In Kane’s mind, it is all in the game. He needs an end to justify the means.

Harry Kane hasn’t turned up for work for two days in a row, with no note from his GP as far as I know.

Captain of the national team, role model or dickhead? Discuss.

As long as it ****s Spurs up a bit him behaving like a spoilt 4 year old, albeit an obscenely well compensated one, is fine by me.
