An mbe for services to rowing? What the ****? Surely, using this as a yardstick, every footballer (professional and otherwise) who plays competitively, should get an mbe for their services to football? “Ooh I’m upper middle class, from a rich background and I like rowing. Give me an award fir it. Stuff all those nhs workers who have served their country far more. Let’s give it to the Muslim Brit for rowing a boat”

i used to cox and coach rowers in Durham to a fairly decent level. Are my services to rowing less than his?

Hope Kier purges the crazy left over the next couple of years though, I see no difference between Labour in the 60s and now. The hippies are just rebranded with their bachelors in social studies.

But we need to start focusing on local MPs. They have more effect on us and its much easier for direct communications.

    @Smug in Boots

    Thoughts...

MBE - it's not the same/contradictory, because it's a first. Like, it's a posh irrelevant version of first female PM. It highlights a turning point in history; for many it will seem really important that they're now demonstrably welcome where they'd always previously been excluded.

You're right in that it would be weird if they kept doing it; '4th British Muslim flagbearer' gets silly. Likewise the Sun always tagging Muslims would make more sense if it was the first time it ever happened - 'First ever British Muslim car thief' would be weird enough that it ought to make the news. (You never get to know what denomination white nonces are unless they're priests which is a shame).

Tom Daley - I don't get it either. Not sure if they're trying to be overly PC by noting how accepting of gays they are, or bastardising the standard sexist trend of defining female celebrities in terms of their husbands. Weird either way.

Equality forms - it's complicated, but basically more data is always helpful; that 'I only see people' philosophical purity just isn't practicable.
e.g. France go with that secular/blind approach, and as a result have no way of knowing which employers have objectively, statistically-significant, racist/xenophobic/sexist employment practices, and thus have no way to improve them.

    Good post, good points.

As far as 'first Muslim' whatever, I'm still not sure. I doubt we'd be making such a fuss if it was the 'first Scientologist flag bearer' ...

... firstly I don't think a Scientologist would be given the honour and secondly it wouldn't be mentioned if they were.

    And a Moonie wouldn't get a look in <laugh>

Aye you may be right, (though Scientologists are odd enough I think that's still an OK headline). I have a mate with a few golden tickets who's mentioned being sick of hearing "ooh, so brave" for somehow functioning normally in society despite her racial handicaps. Where do you draw the line?

"Hey there's Billy, the first Asian guy to ever work at Aldi, everyone give Billy a big round of applause."

My favourite, from the legend herself:
"Volvos. That's what all the Jews in London drive, to be sure."

Never been able to corroborate that, but she was so majestically confident in her statement it's always kept with me.

Our flag bearer is an atheist. Let’s celebrate that!!

I’m an atheist. Think there’s as much truth in the bible (or whatever religious book you believe in) as there is in Star Wars!

I see your point but, in reality, there's much more sense and truth in the bible if you ignore the allegorical stuff like loaves and fishes etc. There's not a situation or personal problem that isn't covered by one parable or another ....

... I don't believe everything in the bible but there's some canny stuff <laugh>

At least the bible is pretty interesting nonsense when you crack into it.

Star Wars is anything but. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

It's OK. Some bits are genuinely hilarious. It's always going to lose when up against the rest of the library though: the full knowledge base heathens have access to.

So it wasn't allowing him into the country to live. To grow etc

It's cause he won an MBE so he feels more accepted. Brilliant.

I can't wait for the upturn in immigration applications once they get wind they are eligible for MBE's :emoticon-0102-bigsm

are we in danger of going 'too far' though?

to clarify a little, a while ago there was a campaign about television adverts rarely featuring non white actors now it seems almost every advert is taken up with mixed race families, same sex parents etc etc...while i feel anyone with sense would welcome the fact that 'minorites'* are now included i also get the feeling that it is starting to look like overkill, now getting the feel of some agenda to force people into the same train of thought and this, in my mind, is where the opposite and unwanted reactions start to grow, almost like the semi forcing of the vaccine on people making the anti-vaxxers voices grow louder.

i have long held the belief that if someone is ok with me and as long as they are not hurting anyone then crack on, i will be ok with them and i fail to see why others cannot hold that view as surely it is a far better way to get through life and enjoy life, hate is a horrible, negative emotion that causes so many problems..so, just be nice, it's easy.

    * i use 'minorities' to save typing a list of people as if i miss anyone out, someone will shout about it and make the mistake that i omitted them for some reason that is not there.

They're appallingly written films, with bland characters, dull heroes and incapable villains with one dimensional motivations.

Not to mention the acting bounces between utterly camp and remarkably wooden.

The best ****ing acting is from a green puppet for ****'s sake.

    Starting?

Extreme Ghostbusters (i.e. Normal Ghostbusters + Asian(?) Woman + Disabled Man) came out in 1997.

    your point being?

mine obviously was not trying to say this was a 'sudden and unexpected' change, it has been a gradual change...i at no point tried to claim it was 'just starting'

Adverts have gone way OTT now, they shovel in so many minorities I lose track of what it is they're trying to sell me ...

... the one for Sky Sports where they had a Sikh, a black fella, an Asian and someone else playing keepy uppy, in a stadium car park was ridiculous.
