Team GB? The team is officially known as the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team,[4] and the use of Team GB as the BOA's branding is seen as inadequate by some, as it suggests the team is drawn from Great Britain alone, which only consists of England, Scotland and Wales, while omitting the rest of the territories where BOA athletes are eligible for selection, most notably Northern Ireland, as well as the Crown dependencies (Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey), and those British Overseas Territories (BOT) that are not represented by their own National Olympic Committee. In June 2009, Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Sports Minister Gregory Campbell suggested that the name should be changed as the abbreviated form was not inclusive enough as it "excludes, and indeed alienates, the people of Northern Ireland".[6] Campbell's successor, Nelson McCausland, also suggested that an alternative name be found.[7] A significant complication is that the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), established in 1920 while Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, claims to represent the whole island of Ireland and not merely the Republic. The OCI and BOA have an agreement under which Northern Ireland sportspeople may choose to compete for either team.[8] The BOA has rejected calls for the name to be changed to Team UK, arguing that neither Team GB nor Team UK are entirely accurate, given that neither term covers all the members of its association, and that Team GB is an "effective trading name that fitted best with the Olympic identification of GBR".[9]
Taxi for Hazel Irvine. She's making some unusual schoolgirl errors on bbc. Just said Ben Whittaker fight was coming on, but it was a completely different fight.
Just watching on BBC.... shows the funding levels.... rowing the highest (24.5 million) above even athletics even sailing (22.8 million) is higher.... both crashed and burned this Olympiad... time for a rethink.///
Just seen a British boxer beaten by a Cuban. But the kid Luke McCormack did well and never took a step back. Just lost to the gold medal winner by effect of the draw, which must be a lottery. McCormack now turning pro. Good luck.
Just some brilliant stuff by team GB today..... I love the new addition to the mixed teams... adds a whole new dimension... the 4 x 100m medley was brilliant, so was the triathlon and 3 girls in the 800m final.... just brilliant... BOC need to look closely at how money is distributed...
They all did a 'mini' triathlon each(a much diluted version of the single event one),it was enjoyable though and they worked hard as a team to achieve their medals.
It was the first bit of the games i'd watched, couldn't have picked a better event to start. They was terrific.
Watching replay of the Korea v Mexico game, entertaining game.Mexico scored a lovely second goal. It's 30 mins into 1st half, well worth a watch.
