He also made his premier league debut at 17 against Man City and didn’t look out of place even then Has nearly 270 premier league appearance to his name - likely more than any of villa’s squad. Potentially more than their current midfield combined There are premiums for PL experience , selling between PL clubs, English players and long contracts. None of which appear to have been considered at all here. 25m is close to what you’d pay for someone with his stats from Germany, Spain or Italy with the hope he would do it in the PL If this was Football Manager (I know it isn’t) such a derisory opening offer would turn the bidding screen red and the game would lock you out of bidding again that entire window as the selling club would just assume you weren’t serious They paid more for Buendia for Christ’s sake!
They were certainly not great without him. And I’m not sure Buendia and AN Other new winger (Bailey , Smith Rowe) really changes that.
It's Levy like! But I guess they want to start the negotiation. To me we can not afford to sell JWP, unless he's unsettled, then Villa have to at least double it.
You’d like to think that is the number based on the White and Grealish fees. And it would be all down to Villa for demanding 100 for Grealish. It moves the goalposts Leicester will be pleased as well as they can push the Maddison fee demand up (Arsenal rumours )
To elaborate, I just think it's much harder to find players who can unlock defences and create goals, than it is to find players who can play the defensive midfield role. Look at us since promotion. How many quality defensive midfielders have we had? A lot. Even the likes of Cork and Romeu have performed that job well enough. How many decent playmakers have we had though? Lallana, Mane, Tadic (sometimes). Probably missing one or two but you get my point. I just think you can get by with a good def-mid, but a 'good' playmaker won't do in the Prem. You need an exceptional one. Grealish is that. Hence why Grealish is priced at 100m and JWP only half that.
Fair point. I think if Saints sell JWP we are well and truly fcuked! The guy is the heart of our team!
You say half - yet Villa have bid a quarter And bid more for Smith-Rowe who has had a handful of appearances and hasn’t really demonstrated that he can unlock defences
Whether Villa come in with a worth while offer or not for JWP the real question is, Villa, really? JWP can do so much better. Villa aren't that much of a step up from Saints if at all. Playing for Villa won't guarantee him an England place and I doubt Villa will challenge for trophies next season so what would he gain apart from a bigger pay check.
Yeah I agree, to an extent. It's a scary move. What I will say though, is that this summer 50m is more like 80m. The transfer market is dead, and players are going for much cheaper than usual. If that 50m were wisely invested, selling JWP might actually be a shrewd move.
They were rejected though, rightfully. Just because someone makes a bid, that doesn't then denote the player's value.
For example if Delaney is indeed for sale for 8m then 50m for JWP and 8m for him with the rest of the money used elsewhere including Armstrong etc You can see how it can be done. We lose all the set pieces of course but that is one of those things. It is not the ideal scenario of course. As always I am sure we have a number we think he is worth. And unlike with Hoj or Ings or the like we won’t be bullied into less and JWP isn’t going to agitate for a move to Villa.
My instinct it to ask how common is it for someone to start the bidding at 50% or less. But the rumours are we did that with Armstrong. But to me that is more acceptable because he isn’t tied to a long deal and Blackburn’s numbers seem to have ignored that
I take your point, but if you look at JWP when he plays as a 10, like he did in the friendly for England, he is even better than when he plays as a DM, given the fact that he can still always track back and block or tackle when necessary. Up until now, Ralph has almost always had no choice but to play him as a DM, (or as a RB) because of a lack of players in that position. Now, though, with Diallo coming through, and Romeu recovered, could we see JWP occasionally given a freer rôle? He’ll never be a Grealish, I grant you, but I believe all his best attributes would flourish even more if he played further forward.
A mate of mine works with JWP's brother (genuinely). He spoke to him about Villa after their initial interest earlier this summer, and basically he won't be leaving, well not to Villa anyway. If a champions league club came in then things might be different.
