Its brilliant to see both Tom's score and get the win, sign Tom H up, will certainly put quite a few on the gate if they do. Always a pleasure to watch, his artistry is just a sight for sore eyes.
Hull City rounded off their pre-season fixtures with a good run-out against a Manchester United Under-23 side on Saturday, winning 2-0 at the MKM Stadium. Two goals in as many second half minutes from Tom Huddlestone and Tom Eaves earned the win, as plenty more players got minutes under their belt. Grant McCann turned to the players that didn’t feature in Friday night’s fixture at Sunderland for this one, with new loan signing from Manchester United Di’Shon Bernard making his first appearance for the Tigers. The side was captained by young defender Andy Smith, while Huddlestone was given a further opportunity to gain some match fitness as he continues to train with the Club. Huddlestone lined up against his former Tigers colleague Paul McShane who featured as an over-age player in the United side following his recent addition to their coaching staff. McShane had a chance to open the scoring for the visitors when a near-post corner was flicked on but the defender headed over at the far post. The home side’s first chance came from a free kick won and taken by George Moncur. Eaves flicked a deflected effort on for Bernard, who saw his volley go wide. James Scott saw a low strike kept out by United goalkeeper Dermot Mee, while Smith saw an effort go just wide from inside the box. Huddlestone curled a shot wide from around 25 yards out just before half time as it remained goalless at the break. Moncur sent a shot over the bar early in the second half at the end of a nice passing move before the deadlock was broken by a lovely left-footed Huddlestone strike from 25 yards in the 58th minute. It became two goals in as many minutes as the Tigers doubled the lead on the hour. Smith crossed from the right and Eaves got ahead of his marker and the goalkeeper to head into the net. Substitute Josh Hinds went close shortly after replacing Scott before United goalkeeper Mee was sent off nine minutes from time for a professional foul on Eaves after being dispossessed on the edge of his area. Hinds almost added a third late on, but the job was already done ahead of the real action getting underway next weekend. Won't lie, I can't believe the euphoria around Huddlestone. I think he was a great player and lad but, I don't really understand how he fits into our style, even Davies said that in the HDM article. I'd sign him if he wants peanuts and have him as a bit-part player but I certainly wouldn't be breaking the bank for him. Looking good against Scunthorpe & Utd's U23s (without their best youngsters) doesn't change anything either. It'd be great to see him in a proper game to see where he's at
Grant needs to find a plan b, which means we need something different. Wages dependant id sign him in a heartbeat. Although apart from the fact he’s not a big tackler, I’d pick him over Smallwood in any style of play
In a squad of young influential players, someone to look up to and respect, learn from, TH brings more, much more than playing capabilities... maybe thats why McC might not fancy him...
Theres a thing called 'earning the right......' as it stands McC now has a championship on his CV, fair play to him, but as a footballer and not a coach he was just average, whereas TH still now has an air about him, a speed of thought and there seems to be an excitement from the playing staff that he's in the group. It should be the perfect storm McC was a defender and TH a midfielder, surely a great coaching combination. I just feel that Hudd in the set up might undermine McC authority or he might just see it that way. I may be way wide of the mark and he may love to have him here, I just have my doubts. Lets hope he does...
McCann will need all the help he can get. He's got a young inexperienced squad of players and if our expectations are to remain in the Championship I'm fairly sure he won't be in any hurry to cut off his nose to spite his face? None of us can be quite sure what the future holds with Huddlestone, whether or not he'll even come in on a playing or coaching role,or fancy it, but given the chance and the finances I'm fairly sure he'd be welcomed by the 'Club' and everyone within it...
The fact the season starts next week there must be a good chance he’s coming back. If Tom’s only with us for fitness, why didn’t he train with Derby or someone closer to his base
If McCann doesn’t fancy him, why has he got Tom training with the squad and playing in pre-season games? Clown.
