I was considering the fact that TC obviously wants to play at the highest level possible. I didn't know the club had an option year. Without that, we could be forced to sell cheaper than we want to.

As much as I like watching Cantwell play, I wouldn't be worried if we sold him for £40m.

Yeah I agree, the issue really is whether we can replace him well enough with the short time available. Webber and his team have done fairly well in the transfer market in general, but there's certainly been errors.

Patrick Roberts, Drmic, Heise, Franke, Marshall...

Amadou was a good idea but didn't work, and he would have been a £13m signing. The jury is still out on Placheta, Husband and Passlack didn't work due to youth development.

Largely transfer business has been good, particularly where we've spent a reasonable fee, but can we find a replacement in around 2 weeks if Todd leaves, and will they fit in and ensure the 10 goals+assists I think we'd get from Todd?

Oh I see. I thought you were referring to this window.

Unfortunately the nature of transfers is they won't all work, especially when you're paying what we pay or buying players for development.

I guess the bottom line for us is money and there's no doubt that overall we're doing very well, I can't think of any lower PL / Championship clubs that over the last few years have had better success in the transfer market than us.

The Buendia deal alone has more than paid for all the transfers that haven't work out. You've got to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince.

Going back to your "as things stand now", DH, the likely replacement for Todd in a 4-2-3-1 would be Rashica, with Dowell in the middle and Lees-Melou on the right. Given that it's Liverpool then Citeh, however, might we see 3 at the back and only Rashica and Dowell behind Pukki? The WBs could provide the width and Lees-Melou could push up from midfield.

Trying to be rational and contrary to my own feelings, just how important is Cantwell to our long-term development process? He wanted to leave a year ago after relegation and only has one year plus an option on his contract, so his value will drop if he continues to refuse to sign another.

Then there's SW's emphasis on the need for greater physicality in the squad. Todd isn't big, he lacks pace and his defensive contribution is modest at best. Yes, he has technical brilliance when playing at his best, but is he willing to dig deep in a battle for survival?

I only ask these questions to try to work out what is best for both this season and long-term. We've added new players since we were last in the PL but how much has that improved the squad overall when you add in the loss of Buendia, Vrančić, Tettey and Stieperman? Would the loss of Todd be balanced by the 2-3 players we could bring in with the money? Lots of questions but I honestly don't know the answer.

No comparison between Buendia and Cantwell. If we get £30-40m for the latter then that will be a bonus. Would like to keep Aarons and as the rumour mill has gone very quiet with regard to him then let’s hope he stays.

Anything over £30m and take the money, he's a local boy which counts for something but he appears to believe his own hype and feels he's bigger than the club.

On his day he's very good but after the restart he looked like he accepted relegation and then sulked to try and get a move.

Villa's decision is very similar to our own. If they sell Grealish that will cover the cost of Buendia, Bailey and Cantwell or another similar player. Buendia's sale has allowed us to buy 3 new players and Cantwell leaving could do the same. That is our route to improving the quality of the squad over time.

    Possibly <laugh>

Trickle down economics doesn't usually work in football , teams like Ipswich get it in drips when we poach their academy players .

    New rumour?

Interesting as really don’t think we’ll be able to offer him extended game time unless Aarons is leaving and it would also mean no Skipp return.
