Yes I might be thinking of two or three years ago where SW seemed a lot more reactionary than now

Phone rings in the ings household, Mrs picks up.

    Who is it asks Danny?
    Pep?
    Ole?
    Levy?
    Tuchel?
    Arteta?
    Must be Benetiz?

    "No, someone called Dean."

£28m for an injury prone player pushing 30 with one year on his contract is a massive result for SFC in my humble opinion.

So it’s definitely being reported at 30m based on that Liverpool sell on report

All those wanting answers as to why Ralph said Ings would be here until the end of his contract - I imagine the straightforward answer is that he was not expecting this sort of offer to come in and has only had to react to that now. I imagine offers of 15-20m would have been rejected

I cannot see what other option Saints had with Danny Ings. The £25 million fee is ok-ish in the light of 20% going to Liverpool and, has been pointed out, the remaining £20 million is not a lot in today's money. Ings will be a massive miss for Saints but I am far more disappointed with his attitude than Saints.

I am surprised by the comments that the money is sure to be reinvested. I think that they will stick with Obafemi and the cash only spent when things go wrong before the January transfer window.

The person I feel sorry for is Hassenhutl. We will struggle without Ings and he will almost certainly not be the last one out of the door. There is no Vestergaard nor JWP in the friendly tonight and I think both will be gone by time the season kicks off. Obefemi and Djneppo also missing. The line up tonight looks short on quality and I am curious if this will signal any future departures.

I am wondering about Ralph's situation. Have we ever had a manager who had either been undermined or been the victim of circumstances like him before? As I have said previously, given the hand he has been dealt, I am really still on the fence as to his ability as a manager. My gut feeling is that he knows what he is doing but those around him controlling the purse strings are making the job very difficult for him. Other than Perraud, I see the other arrivals as supplementing the academy as opposed to improving the first team. If Ralph gets the chop due to performances this coming season, there is only a proportion of the balme that can be levelled at him. I don't feel he is being permitted to operate as he would wish.

It occurs to me (and I'm probably not the first/only person) that the title of this thread:
Danny Ings close to signing new long-term contract
has finally become accurate. It isn't a contract with Saints, but these are just details....

This is being a little too hard on him but does certainly explain why we sold him

It might also harden our resolve on JWP as well

If he had had the same amount of time out this coming season as last season (staying with us) and then left for free at the end then we’d (arguably) be ruing rejecting an offer like this

Like with everyone it depends on who else we get in. If we can bring in Delaney, Armstrong and another striker as well as sort a backup left back then our squad will be more balanced. Still obviously a risk that the goals aren’t there

But Brighton manage without a goalscorer. So do Burnley . Not the clubs we want to compare to

A big silver lining is that this didn’t drag out until deadline day - which I honestly saw it doing

The fee is reported to be £30 million, and even if it were £25 million, we would only be giving Liverpool £1 million of the £5 million profit.

He didn’t get the chop after two 9-0s. Only way I see it happening is if there is a third similar drubbing

Part of me is very frustrated that we've sold ings to Villa who may or may not be pushing for European football come the end of the season however the other part of me is realistic enough to know that we simply cannot afford to let players run down their contracts and leave for nothing it would be a completely unsustainable model for us. As is always the case it's all about how that money is spent now and whether we can come out of this window stronger than when we went in it

Think we need a decent start. If we're bottom 3 come October/November then the pressure will build.

Fee was £30m, with 10% of profit (£2m) going to Liverpool.

£28m for an injury prone 29 year old with 1 year on his contract is great business.

For the business, I guess it makes sense. We need cash and in a year's time we get nothing.

Still it's massively disappointing from a fan's perspective. We don't get a new hero to remember for years to come.

I am not so sure. If you add the issue of Covid in to the mix, Ralph's tenure at Saints has been jinxed. Ideally, I would love to see a situation where Ralph can eventually build the whole squad in his image with the players he has recruited and that he believes in. He has not be bad by any means but I strongly believe that he is miles away from achieving his true potential with Saints. I have no grumble with letting Ings so - especially when you consider many people in here thought him a massive risk when he first signed. I feel the same about Vestergaard. Only JWP has improved his gamne more than Jannick under Ralph but he still has a ricket in him and I would be inclined to accept a decent offer for him.

JWP is another kettle of fish. We cannot afford to lose him and if he went, I would feel that Ralph has been set an impossible task. From my point of view, we arw still suffering from the legacy of Puel and I am hioing that this season sees us eventually shugging of his ghost. I want to see a combatitive Saints team led by Ralph but the money needs to go into a talismanic talent. My fear is that the money gets held back until January and I cannot see us making a marquee signing. If you like, I do not feel Ralph is going to get the support to fulifl his vision.

Injury prone he may be. But his goals kept us up. Have to do a good job replacing him
