I have a feeling he will contribute quite a few goals this season. He’s a decent finisher in his day and I’ve always had confidence that if he’s in front of goal more often than not he will score.
He just seems like half the time he can’t be arsed. If he got a goal or two early doors then he may try a bit. He’s always been a pretty good finisher.
Good. There’s a chance he may indeed start scoring some goals. If he hits the ground running and we know Wilson will score then we could have two players scoring post 10 in the season.
Let's be honest, he's **** I'm the Prem, scored goals for fun for us and West Brom I'm the champ, but his 3 Prem seasons for us have been horseshit. 1 goal in 20 games last season is almost as bad as that deadly finisher Andy Carroll's 1 in 22. Hope I'm wrong, but the stats don't lie.
Tbf you could have said the same about Routlege. Yet when he went to Swansea he stormed the PL. Think it all depends on the club/managers
Supposedly an absolute bell end too Lets get rid. Sign Nketiah on loan to link up with his mucker Willock.
He's a very limited player but if he's going to succeed it's in a counter-attacking team with pace where he's fed with players getting in behind. That's our current set up. Hard to be too harsh on him when he's working with his back to goal, or as a sole striker with a gap to midfield, in some of our previous incarnations. He's not got many strengths but we've also systematically rarely played to them either!
The problem is the stats do lie. Its hard to tell isn't it? He hasn't really played much in the PL. For us he has made only started 37 games over the course of those three seasons. 11 goals in 37 starts - 3.36 games per goal. For context the much revered Rondon was 11 in 29 starts 2.64 games per goal - which given he was a consistent starter unlike Gayle, record probably not miles apart. Not great but I've seen a hell of a lot worse in defensive sides. Take 2019-20. 4 in 20 games in the PL looks horrific. Then you realise he only started 10 games and 10 were sub appearances. Then you look at 2018-19. Again looks terrible at 6 in 37 but then you realise he only started 23 games. Then last year 1 in 20. Horrific again. Actually only started 4 games. The only time he has started consistently is in the championship. I think the bigger issue with Gayle to his finishing is why does he not start games. Its easy to say "managers didn't give me a chance" but I checked his injury record and he has been injured a total of 299 days since 2016-17 through 2020-21. That's more than 3/4 of a year. Split that up over a number of seasons, he's never given a manager a chance to pick him. Get rid. Never gonna stay fit so whether he can do it at PL level is moot point.
