Two winners, two losers. Just shy of double my money back.

Midtown ran a decent race. The commentator said he was travelling well but I wasn't so sure but he did look to hold a chance, Briefly had trouble getting a clear run but in the end he couldn't go with Poetic Flare and I just wonder if he is a 7F horse. Order Of Australia was having a going day today and denied the French a place in their own race. Chindit ran pretty well and that is as close as he has got to Poetic Flare this season. The Bolger colt has to be admired for the way he keeps on in his races and he's narrowly been denied a stellar season. I hope we see more of him.

Victor Ludorum was dire but he's generally been a big disappointment apart from his French Guineas triumph. Today's race was much tougher than the egg and spoon race he won last time out. I said that day that they may as well retire him if he couldn't win it and watching him today you had to feel he's perhaps not in love with the game. Alpine Star was a massive flop today in last place. I did wonder if she might be a filly not to train on a 4YO. Her seasonal debut was a good stone shy of her best and she's trailed in 16 lengths in arrears today in a tame effort.

I did say the Palace Pier/Poetic Flare was probably a shoo-in CSF, the dividend of reward was £2.72 (The world's tiniest megaphone goes "Woohoo") <cracker>

First one won and Time To Fly needed another 100 yards then probably would have won but apart from that the others never threatened. Small loss on these.

What the hell was that? A Group 3 runner up has trailed in second last, some 18 lengths adrift of a 75 rated filly. That is a shocking effort there and she finished more than 5 lengths behind the filly in front of her, who was found to be lame. How the hell can you finish behind a lame horse? As ever, the "Why they ran badly" was useless, with Andrea Arzeni reporting that the filly never travelled and the Vet said there were no abnormalities. It's runs like these that feed the notion that the game is bent. Probably pop up and win at a big price later.

Jessica Harrington's Alpine Star also ran a stinker in France but this was a whole different level of a shocking effort, a few stones below her best effort and her 106 OR. I demand a refund M'Lud. Will the court rise in the case of Grendel vs Jessica Harrington and Ladbrokes.

I notice John Gosden has said that Palace Pier was only at 80% today following a blood disorder. He was described as being "Ten days short" in his preparation for today's race.

Nice performance bearing that in mind today. The Guineas that got away surely with Palace Pier and my 16/1 voucher with it.

Is Ernie Wise still alive? I thought he had passed but the Racing Post headline today "He's the best miler I've rode" makes me wonder. Ernie was always telling Eric about a "Play what I wrote" back in the heyday of Morecambe and Wise and it seems his spirit lives on.

You've lost me here I'm afraid. If you have an issue with me you can just say it straight. I am fairly regular with my applause of the forums winners and offer plaudits quite frequently when I pop in from time to time. Not sure what your comment is trying to achieve.

Regret random answer to your question, but never mind, it's late in the day. Not trying to 'achieve' anything, really. Was a bit taken aback as I thought your comment was somewhat effusive. Forget it, horseracing with its present woes is just not worth bothering about. Never in my life have I seen the industry fall under the complete control of bookmakers. Daily, far too many meetings, giving the punter (nearly all working men and women) little or no chance at sorting things out. Even I, with time on my hands after midday, find it just too much. Storm in a teacup. Sorry.

No worries, I was just greatful for the selection put up and felt it was deserving of praise. As you just alluded to, it isn't easy to pick a winner with the amount of racing and lack of quality can make it hard, when people put in the hard work or just get plain lucky then I think it is kind to let them know their work was appreciated, however they came to the conclusion.

Time for the leaba (bed) now. Won't be long until morning time. Rest up Swanny. All the best.

Quite a nice debut from Donnacha O'Brien's Absolute Ruler at Dundalk today. The son of War Front was running over a mile in a race where Moony Beams was odds-on favourite for Ger Lyons. The Fav had placed twice with efforts rated in the 80's by the Racing Post. Absolute Ruler broke well but the jockey seemed happy to take a lead and sat him in 3rd/4th most of the way. At the business end Absolute Ruler and brother Joseph's Amortentia broke clear of the field and had a brief battle before Absolute Ruler got on top and scored by a length and a quarter. It was five and a half lengths back to the Fav in 3rd place and although he may not have liked the surface, it was still a fair standard he set coming in.

Absolute Ruler looked like he has a frame to fill out with time and I was watching him today because he has an entry in the Royal Lodge later in the season. A promising start I think.

Once upon a time it was felt the Ballydoyle naming meant something and this colt has a handle that suggests lofty ambitions.
