Problem is that a section of our fans have an insatiable desire for a scapegoat and Burge seems to be it.
Not for me. No one is critical of him last night. Think they are over the course of last season mostly. Did nothing wrong at all last night for me. Still think we need better mind.
I'd agree with this. Hes had criticism when deserved like any player, but he didn't do anything wrong last night. Unfortunately he was beaten by a good finish.
Not only that he rescued the defence twice by coming well out of his goal ... ... also nothing wrong with his distribution despite having endless passbacks to deal with.
Can't say it any clearer mate, certain posters claim he will/has cost us 12, 15, 18 points per season. I'm wanting to verify that. My methodology is test how many POINTS Burge costs us. I have never said anything like what you're saying above. In the case above we'll have been lucky but he won't have cost us points. No-one is claiming Burge is perfect, no-one is claiming he doesn't make mistakes - which gk doesn't? no-one is saying he's irreplaceable, if a better 'keeper is available and we can get him, then get him. Mebbes I'm just sick and tired of certain sections of our support having a desperate need for a scapegoat.........................
We had THREE good chances to clear the ball for the Burton goal so three errors from defenders ... ... more fatal errors than Burge has made all season so far. Not all errors lead to goals being conceded and that includes any made by Burge. People say he unsettles the defence which could just as easily be the other way round tbh.
Our fans always have done. I remember the same as far back as John O'Hare who went on to score well everywhere he played.
Hope you keep this up over the season mate as it will be interesting to read. Could almost run another prediction comp on how many points people think he will cost us )
problem is though, those with the 'burge is crap' agenda will find a way to blame him...for instance, the defence could let a man in one on one and burge possibly could have done more to save the shot, will that be his fault or the defences? right now he is our man between the sticks and so far he has not cost us any points, our outfield players have made a few mistakes and invited pressure and possibly cost us points v burton...does this mean we have to get rid of those outfield players as well, the argument is as flawed as it is futile...i dont think i have seen a single post claiming burge is excellent or that if we have the chance we should not improve on him (as we should any position) but the never ending barrage of -insert name of latest scapegoat- is annoying, especially without full facts to back it up and if people really want to go down the points he has cost us route then they need to also look at points he has saved us/won us by making a good save.
also stewart did not score with a couple of chances, winch, gooch, pritchard had good shots saved so do we get rid of them as well as they obviously cost us the points...
We collectively had an off day in front of goal. I'm hoping and I'm pretty sure it'll be a rarity to create that many good scoring chances and not take one. My issue would be if we were struggling to create anything, a harder problem to remedy.
have to give credit to their keeper as well to be fair...my point was do we get rid of anyone that 'costs us points' and how the hell do we gauge lost points, any one instance can change the flow and result of a game, players get cards which can hold them back from making a decisive challenge or they get sent off, players can slip at the wrong time, a free kick or penalty or a badly called offside etc etc etc yet if the keeper makes a bad clearance they all want him out, especially if it leads to a goal .
Following a certain logic to the extreme means that Burge keeping a clean sheet, in a 0-0, means the outfield players cost us two points. If Burge makes no mistakes, as in last night, the outfield has cost us at least one point and possibly three.
Burge’s pass out into the centre circle at MK started a ream of criticism for him. Not a soul has said anything about the defenders you mention. If it was McFadzean at LB last night you can guarantee there’d be all sorts of criticism all over the place on here. (For the goal and the attempted first touch on midfield)
exactly, see my previous post...how the hell can you guage lost points, points won is easy as we scored more goals but so many things can change a game.
Bugger, looks like I've missed the interesting bit of the thread, so- Burge seems to be an above average third tier keeper. Replace with better when can, but this isnt, at the mo, top priority.
