I’d be very surprised if we don’t use our final loan slot. But given our next highest need (excluding goalie upgrade) is a 6 I wonder who we could possibly get.

Because unless there is someone I am unaware of who will force Romeu out of the side actually available for loan I don’t know who would join us as backup

Unless there is someone who can play there as well as at least one other position like CB.

If it’s a loan we’re looking at, then these are the obvious options available from the big 6.

Arsenal: Maitland-Niles. Played well against us as a CM, and his personal favoured position.

Chelsea: No loan available due to Broja.

Liverpool: Oxlade-Chamberlain. Klopp seems to want to keep him tho and not sure how much he’s played as a midfielder recently.

Man City: Yangel Herrera. Think City would prefer to sell, but towards the end of the window anything can happen. Aggressive box-to-box player, like a Vidal-lite.

Man U: McTominay if they get a new CM in, as they’ve been threatening all window? He’s injured currently though.

    Spurs: Winks? Lol.

Obviously a lot of youth players from these clubs too, not aware of any that would be ready for a premier league loan tho.

Honourable mention to Leicester’s Choudhury, who we’ve been linked with before.

Most of those don’t help in the position we actually need - Romeu’s. The more defensive of the two

I understand Herrera does and would hope we are looking at that as I don’t know who is going to have 20m available to buy him like city want

McTominay is having surgery so that rules him out

What type of CM is AMN? If he can play the defensive role then he might be a good option as he can cover in other positions if desperate

My pick based on my understanding of these players would be Herrera with an option to buy as he could takeover from Romeu feasibly.

Now if we have the funds for an actual purchase of a defensive midfielder then the loan slot is more open and someone like Oxlade would interesting but he seems unlikely to move at this stage

Yangel would be my pick, too. None of them completely fit the memo, tho. Haven’t a clue how realistic he is as an option but he was been linked a couple times in the past.

Options from abroad with previous links:

Veerman - Deep lying playmaker, not really defensive.

McKennie - Would be too expensive, unless Juve wanna flog him last minute.

Koopmeiners - He’ll have better options / too expensive.

Sangare - No reason to leave PSV after a year.

It’ll probably be a Diallo / Lyanco out of nowhere guy, if we do get anyone.

Sangare - they would want more than double the money which we won’t do

Someone called Marco Kana was linked before. CM who can play CB. Dubbed “next Kompany” but doesn't seem quite tall enough for a modern CB

Herrera is the literal number 6 for his national side. So there is that !

From reading news stories about people like him and Koopmeiners it seems like Leeds are in the market for a new CM too. I expect they can outbid us at the moment in terms of fee

I wonder what the reaction on here and Saintsweb is going to be if Brighton shatter our transfer record to buy a striker that nobody has likely seen play before and whose career best season is 18 goals in the Spanish second division ...

The one I thought we should have been all over was Ajer from Celtic. Tall, ball player who can play in midfield or at CB. He’s the blueprint of what we’re after and Brentford don’t make mistakes in the market so he’ll do well there.

Timing unfortunately. We didn’t have the money for Vestergaard in or the certainty he would definitely have a suitor

Same as I am sure we would have considered one of the two defenders palace signed. But they were already taken

Let me think about that one. Didn't we buy a striker from that area for £20m a few years back, in desperate circumstances? That didn't end well as I recall!!!

By all accounts this one a lot more promising (younger with potential resale value as well) but his goal record doesn’t suggest that. But he will seemingly be £10m more as well

The mooted fee just baffles me given he scored 1 in 4 in Portugal for one of the top teams last season. And most of the Portuguese league is dross.

I was thinking more the comments of “Brighton are spending 30m and our biggest signing this summer is half of that” followed by the usual hand wringing

Tom Davies? Been linked continuously over the past few windows. Definitely qualifies as a possible 6.

I’m quite shocked by this Ronaldo transfer. I know modern players are very different but he always spoke affectionately of Ferguson and Man United. Going to city is so odd

It is also surprising that United won’t at least try and match it but they presumably don’t have space in their wage budget. They might wish they hadn’t extended the cavani contract

Haha, I love that Tom Davies photo, he's just messing about. Good to see a bit of eccentricity among modern footballers. It's just a shame he's not very good at football.

I wonder what his favourite film is? An English Man in New York.

Yes, I have little problem with him dressing how the hell he likes. I have more of a problem with the fact I'm not sure I'd want him playing football for Saints. (Subject to change should he join and be really good).

For the fee Everton would want I would expect we could bid for Koopmeiners who would be a much better fit

But he is linked with Atalanta who are in the champions league so even if we had the funds I would expect that is a no go
