Ridiculous decision by the club if Slater is the incoming... we have just signed Hudd on a 1 +1 option, Smith on loan, then add Smallwood, Docherty, Honeyman, Moncur, Cannon, then add the youngsters including Harry Wood, Josh Hinds.... even Alfie Jones is a preferred midfield slot for me...
It seems a strange one IF true. As good as Bernard was yesterday, we really do need an experienced, quality CB (not necessarily in place of Bernard). Not a bad thing adding Slater to the squad in and of itself. He proved 2nd half last season that he's a decent player and prospect. There's talk of 1 or 2 going out. Maybe Smallwood and another of the youngsters? That might then make more sense. Slater fits totally with the club's model, and now we have Hudds as the experienced midfielder / role model. Can't have too many midfielders, wingers, Smiths, ....
Re-signing Slater this late in the window after already signing alternatives for his position is like Southgate taking 4 right-backs to the Euros. Utterly pointless decision by the club. If it’s a loan and we’re still under embargo, it’s a waste of a squad position within the 25-man limit and if it’s a permanent and we’ve paid the loan back, it’s a waste of scarce resources.
From the Managers own mouth, seems as if Eaves may be going out too. https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/regan-slater-hull-city-transfer-5845376
If Slater is available, you sign him. We haven't actually signed a defensive midfielder this summer. We have less cover than last year as we've lost Alfie to the defence. The jury is still out on Smallwood at this level, he'll give you everything but his quality isn't there. Tom showed yesterday that he can still offer something at this level and it'll probably allow Smallwood to leave. I'd imagine Regan would be on lower wages than Richie so apart from a small transfer fee, I doubt it'll cost us a fortune
Slater's Dad says he is injured but could be open to a move. Could we acommodate Slater by selling on Cannon or Smallwood?
Slavisa Jokanovic wants the Sheff Utd board to make the signings he was promised when he joined the club and said this openly on his BBC Radio Sheffield interview yesterday, so maybe the board need to get some players off the wage bill before they can make some signings or as is rumoured - the Sheff Utd owners are skint.
There are three centre midfield spots. We currently have Smallwood, Doc, Cannon, Honeyman, Smith and Huddlestone. Assuming Smallwood leaves, Slater would give us two players per position, which is exactly what we need.
