Well said. 100%. And (as OLM posted) here's the FACTS: W2 D5 L21 GF 21 GA 66 11 points from a possible 84 Even with the constraints, that's appalling. The players haven't been / aren't that bad. I'd suggest the biggest problem is McCann and Byrne (their lack of ability and their stubborness), not the players, not the constraints.
Also, McCann failed to get Donny and Peterborough promoted to the Championship. He was even sacked by Peterborough after no wins in 7 games in League 1. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when we won the League 1 title but now I’m starting to think we won the title in spite of him, not necessarily because of him. Our squad last season was way too good for League 1 and anything but a top two finish would’ve been disappointing. There are a few in the squad who are solid League 1 players at best, but there are also a few who I think are good enough for the Championship, but they need better coaching than what we have now. I’ve yet to see any evidence that Grant McCann is a good enough manager for this level.
I'm intrigued by this comment. What does it actually mean? McCann was our manager, no-one else can be ascribed that role. Are you saying that the players sorted themselves out in private after training and ignored everything McCann said, in order to gain promotion? What evidence is there for that, or anything remotely similar? McCann is struggling right now, and has struggled before. He's a football manager, they've all been there. Seeking to deny his hand in any of his successes is remarkable.
It means a chimp could’ve been our coach last season and that squad of players would’ve still finished top two. The fact that we were in and around the top half of the Championship in 2019 and finished rock bottom at the end of the season is proof that Bowen and Grosicki pretty much carried that team and McCann. Soon as they went, he was exposed as being out of his depth. To me, that’s pretty damning evidence that a few good players can compensate for a below-par manager.
I'll give him a lot of credit for last season but that also means he has to take responsibility for the season before and the start of this season . He would be better admitting to his own mistakes rather than pointing out those of young players.
I can't remember him ever digging an individual player out in the press before last night. Even when we were on that abysmal slide. Something seems to have got to him - and he can't blame Burnsy for the questions he bristled at after Swansea now either. End of the day a journo isn't doing his job if he isn't asking difficult questions - but the way McCann handles the media just sharpens the knives of his detractors and makes him look arrogant.
It was Mike White who interviewed him after Swansea, and they were all fair questions in my opinion. You’re right though, a good journo asks difficult questions. McCann just has the cushiest job in football because he knows under the Allams, win, lose or draw, he’ll still have a job. Because he’s under no real pressure from our illustrious owner when it comes to results, he’s insulated from criticism from fans and the media and gets defensive when questioned on piss-poor performances and results.
100% agree. For Kalman to say he played no part in last season’s success is a bit feeble though. Makes you wonder why the likes of Sunderland and Ipswich bother with a manager at all. Just get a chimp in and hey presto!
I find it hilarious you think there’s some ulterior motive or conspiracy as to why I don’t like McCann. I just think he’s ****.
He did well last season but I do wonder would he have achieved success if crowds where in the stadiums some games where like training sessions with zero atmosphere we will never know I guess. You could also argue would we have got relegated if crowds had been in stadiums we most certainly would have had a new manager.
Remember when Wilks was off-form for a few games last season and McCann told Radio Humberside it was because of personal issues he was dealing with, then dropped him? Why air something that was likely shared in confidence to the media as an explanation for poor form? We didn’t need to know what Mallik was dealing with as it’s none of our business. That’s for the coaching staff to sort out behind closed doors. Always thought that was a ****y thing for McCann to do, and it done to deflect from a ****e performance against Burton.
Which begs the question as to why you keep asking what my motive for not liking him is. Reading difficulties? Makes sense given your grammar.
