Insulation should keep buildings cooler in the summer and would reduce the need for air conditioning and fans. There is no point on just insulating a loft floor though, the place that needs insulating is the inside of the roof as that is the thinnest part of the house. People are too stupid to work that out though.

There was a scheme that everybody was entitled to not so long ago to help people insulate their homes in the UK. It got scrapped in April I think, far too much red tape, the government made a bit of a **** of it, as far as I'm aware. Weirdly enough, I have a mate who is offering reduced prices for getting homes insulated with Icynene just now or whatever it is called.

On a purely mathematical point, if it costs £10,000 to insulate an older house with current interest rates around 2% the annual cost us £200. The average home spends £1500 a year on heating, probably nearer £2000 after the price rises. It is estimated that insulation could save 25%, so you could insulate the house, make the tenant/owner pay £300 per annum towards it and make £100 a year profit, while they would be £200 better off. Can anyone point out the flaw ( that's Floor to you DD) in my argument?

If you own your own house insulate it and get double glazing to save on fuel costs and improve resale value.

If you rent a cold uninsulated room in a shared house etc , move .

Insulating a council house at the tax payers expense is probably cost effective other than that it's a problem the free market fixes itself.

I've put down loft insulation before to make my sister's house warner it's pretty easy and I didn't need daddy government doing it for thousand through some costly government agency and contractors.

There are 23 million dwellings in England 27 million in UK.

That's Two hundred and seventy billion .
